Sportingbet Australia under fire
Sportingbet Australia has come under fire from the Australian Punters Association in a heated clash of words at the 3rd Annual Informa Horse Racing and Sports Betting forum held in Sydney on Tuesday.
In response to claims that the Darwin-based betting shop was closing the accounts of winning punters, Sportingbet Sales and Marketing manager Wayne Jones confirmed that they are targeting "recreational punters" and are not willing to do business with punters who have "inside information". Jones confirmed that they have taken this stance as a "commercial decision". Larry Hawke from Bill Hurley bookmaking made his thoughts regarding the closing of accounts clear. "We wouldn't even think about it, we'd take on the challenge", he said. Sportingbet Australia, owned by UK parent Sportingbet PLC, has often been criticized in online forums for closing the accounts of winning clients. In other developments at the forum, TABCORP's Robert Nason was ridiculed by Bookmakers for expecting to be able to field fixed odds at race tracks at the same time holding a monopoly on betting at retail outlets. Also, there was some confusion from Victorian Bookmakers and the local gaming authority as to their ability to use betting exchange Betfair. Centrebet CEO Con Kafataris fears that the extra liquidity on local racing provided by bookies betting and laying will result in them "being eaten up by the sharpies".
