I’m a bit surprised at Romanowski’s recommendation of Poudstone’s book as it is primarily an engaging tale of mafiosi and mathematicians. His message is based on the principle that one should wager a percentage of one's bankroll equal to the advantage of that particular bet. While his equations have certainly proven to be advantageous in virtually all forms of wagering, he does not focus on sports wagering but rather on roulette, blackjack and the stock market.
However, the publisher of the book, John Kelly, has since written extensively on the “cost function” approach to gambling which many are familiar with as the “Kelly Criterion”. This theory has had wide-ranging success, not just for gambling, but in finance as well.
