Sports movie gambling question

In The Replacements, the kicker is going to miss the FG on purpose that would tie the game with Dallas evidently to payoff the goons in the stands. But Washington would have to have been a HUGE dog in that game even with Martell crossing and starting at QB. So, I can't figure out what difference the 3 points would have made to the bookies. Maybe if they had Dallas on the ML, but I doubt there would even be a ML offered on that game.

Does this bother anybody else? Or am I just reading too much into it - I mean, it is just a movie. A pretty good movie IMO, but this bugs me. Maybe I just don't get it. Can someone please explain?

You've never seen games with spreads so high there is no money line?
Okay, even if there was a ML, what kind of wise-guy would bet that big on it? (Please don't say French Dip Sandwich - his wagers were more fictitious than anything Hollywood has ever produced)

Mistake: The sub-plot involving Nigel and the loan shark is completely bogus. In the final game against Dallas they want him to miss the field goal. However, Dallas would be the heavy favorites seeing as how the entire professional team has crossed the picket line for the game. There is no reason for him to miss the field goal, because Dallas would be who everyone is betting on. For the loan sharks to make a big score they need Washington to win that game so they sure wouldn't want him to miss that field goal.

Response: Throughout the movie the replacement players are shown to gain popularity with their team's fans. The loan shark who threatens Nigel is probably dealing almost exclusively with these fans (who are certain to place their bets against Dallas) for this particular game.

maybe usa centred books don't offer big point spread games with moneylines, but most euro centered books do..hell even pinnacle and 5dimes.com/tracking/Affiliate.asp?AffID=AF000189&mediaTypeID=220&AffUrlID=229" target="_blank">5dimes (carribean based) offer moneylines on every game.....

as for people who pound moneylines..most euros do..asian handicap isn't used by the majority like it is in usa

You're definitely not reading too much into this. Plot holes in movies/tv shows always irritate me. Good find.
