Stardust Hotel to Close

The Stardust Hotel, a long time Vegas landmark, will close it's doors on November 1st of this year, to make way for a new glitzy project called "Echelon Place". The new complex will open in 2010.

This marks the end of the hotel and Sprots Books that really started it all back in the 60's. For years, the Stardust always was the first hotel out with the lines. Lefty Rosenthal and others made the Stardust Sports Book the premier book in the world for years. The Stardust's innovations in wagering were the front runners of todays wagering choices. They were the first ones to come up with the "Totals" wager. They expanded the "line" wager to great popularity, when the ML wager was the only wager in town.

I last visited the Stardust Sports book in October and November of last year. As usual, the book was packed at 8:00 am every day with racing enthusiasts, and many people trying to get their football wagers in before the lines changed. Unfortunately, the same could not be said about the hotel and the rest of the casino in general. I'm really going to miss the Stardust. A huge part of Sports Wagering History is going to come down on November 1st.

It is a sad commentary about the changing times. Before the rush for Vegas Hotels to become Mega-Resorts, you could go to the Sports Book, have a drink with an acquaintance, spend a couple of bucks on the horses, and disect the up coming games. You could flirt with the cocktail servers and if you did not get physical with them, they would flirt with you. As the hotels rushed to expand and offer more in the way of amenties to the public, they lost a lot of this appeal at their sports book. It became strictly a business for them. The Stardust was one of the few books left who employed knowledgeable ticket writers and still had the same warm feeling about it that the books had in the 60's and 70's. You could be sitting between a guy who wagers 10 bucks a game and a guy who wagers 5,000 a game. You could shoot the bull with people who were knowledgeable about the game. Now all of that will come to an end. In their rush to make money and expand, the hotels have taken the human element out of gaming, and that is too bad, because that was always a big attraction for me in Vegas.

Sad time. When do we stop killing our history, for the "next best thing" Stardust will be missed. A whole generation of future gamblers, having no knowledge, of what it was like, back in the day. No history, no meaning. RIP STARDUST

I will definitely miss the Stardust!Always enjoyed spending time in their sportsbook while watching ballgames with friends and chatting with sports-minded people about sports in general that are always on hand at any time.Have met some really interesting characters there over the years and got to know a few of the poker dealersI remember their "Stairway to The Stars" while playing in their poker room. Will miss the close proximity(5 minute walk) from my room at The Riviera over to The Stardust that I have enjoyed over the last ten years during the month of May&June that I have attended The BCA North American Eight Ball Championships. My first visit to The Stardust was in July/1974 and I remember playing in a $1-$3 limit 7-card stud game( I don't think hold em was played there or in too many places at that time---was mainly 7 stud everywhere). At that time instead of chips being used to play with we would use Silver Dollars to bet with.I should have saved a few of those racks--LOL.I remember their "Stairway to To The Stars" Poker tournaments that they used to hold in the mid-80's directed by the “Silver Eagle” Bob Thompson. At that time Tom McVeoy was doing well in the tournaments around Las Vegas. Was an interesting time!!---RIP!!!

The casino itself has never been that special, but I would suggest checking it out, if you get the chance Cat

Alot of history there and you still get a very fair line there

Without question...This was "THE" place to go for the best Sports wagering in town...I lived and worked a good many of the Casinos in Las Vegas and for me it was the "ONLY" place to go....BDQH had it right...The diverse amount of people that came there and the associations that occured; not to mention the sometimes heated debates that took place; the joys and sorrows that came along with each wager and much much more that happened over the years... This will never be duplicated and the memories obtained will last forever....Indeed...It will be a sad, sad day when the doors close on this landmark.....And when that happens the last remaining piece of what Las Vegas once was goes with it....Progress is great but sometimes it sucks bigtime......Really going to miss this place.....Maybe somewhere down the road in my own demise I'll get to walk through those doors once again and go up to one of the many ticket writters; make another wager, casually walk over to my favorite seat [If it's not already taken] sit down and stare up at one of the many screens and root home a winner.......Rest in peace my good friend you will be missed by many........
