Stephen Hawking: Contact with aliens could lead to disaster

"Aliens may exist but mankind should avoid contact with them as the consequences could be devastating, British scientist Stephen Hawking warned Sunday.

"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," said the astrophysicist in a new television series, according to British media reports.

The programs depict an imagined universe featuring alien life forms in huge spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own planet dry.

"Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize what ever planets they can reach," warned Hawking.

The doomsday scenario is suggested in the series Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking on the Discovery Channel, which began airing in the United States on Sunday."

What do you think would happen if aliens/extraterrestrials visited Earth?

1) Annihilation
2) Alien Slavery
3) Peaceful Co-existence
4) Ongoing and protracted war/combat
5) Mating with Sexy Hot Alien Women (see below)

Agree with Hawking. Likely scenario is they would be "looking to conquer and colonize what ever planets they can reach."

If they can get here and we can't get beyond our own orbit yet, I'm going to have to imagine we wouldn't stand a chance against their weapons technologies, either.

Dude......universe is pretty big. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to our little solar system yet.

More stars in the universe than grains of sand on all of Earth.

True that, I heard a scientist from SETI say that over the past fifty years of seeking out communications from extraterrestrials, they've basically looked at the equivalent of one square city block out of the entire continent of Africa.

Seen it. Most of those "experts" seem pretty single-minded, as if nothing could ever have happened here without alien intervention.

Theories like all gods were probably aliens, we are descended from aliens, alien knowledge sparked all major periods of human advancement.....ridiculous.

These people can accept constant alien intervention, but can't get their heads around evolution? I'm sure that in the 100's of 1000's of years of early human development, some caveman was able to accidentally spark fire, and then ulitimately he or some other caveman figured out how to replicate it regularly without an alien coming down to teach them. I guess these guys think that aliens must've come down to hand some schematics to Orville Wright, Henry Ford, and Bill Gates, too, because humans couldn't possibly have made their contributions to the world on their own.

These clowns shouldn't take every cave drawing or heiroglyph too literally.

I can accept that more than any of the other nonsense, not that that means I accept it.

Firstly, the pyramids are likely about 5,000 years older than the commonly accepted age. (Read a great book called The Message of the Sphinx by Hancock and Bauval, who actually appeared in that show.) Secondly, the technologies involved in their construction can still be only guessed at. Thirdly, I find it curious that the arrangement of the three main pyramids mimics the relative arrangement of the three stars that compose the constellation Orion's belt, down to a fraction of a degree so small that we couldn't come that close with today's GPS technology.

There are dozens of other unexplainable Egyptian accomplishments. How are the large blocks of the pyramids, which are heavier than 500 men could push, so perfectly shaped and placed so tightly together that a credit card can't be slid between them? How are the squared bases of the pyramids within 1/10,000th of a degree of running perfectly north-south and east-west? Our city blocks in large US cities aren't that accurate.

Those people knew something that we haven't figured out.

Personally, I've long-held the belief that the invention of the wheel, and modern humanity's embrace of it, may have restricted our advancement in other directions. We've built up industry (auto, oil, highway system, etc.) dedicated to keeping us rolling along the ground in 3 dimensions, restricting imagination.

Egyptians didn't use wheels to move their blocks. They didn't build mile-long ramps. The number of slaves needed to move those blocks wouldn't be able to all get a hand on one. What did they do? Sound waves? Levitation? Maybe it was alien technology.

I guess Hawking has been watching ABC's V series and came to his conclusion that were doomed.

time is relative to where you are and how fast you're going, a million years to us could be 5 seconds to them
