stock questions..........jimmyK?

anyone that knows please help out........jimmy k, i saw in one of your past posts that you know your stocks, so if you see this maybe you'll know...

2 things.....

one, i have neteller stock and i found out today that "trading was suspended pending an announcement" and this was also in their news on the 16th.

the second thing i want to know, is there any way to invest to make money off the destroyed orange crop in california? researching, i read that you need to invest before the storm or whatever hits....not after, like i would be doing.

the only applicable stock i could find was dole (DOL)...they dropped .12 today, but were at their 52wk high at the beginning of the month.

thanks to anyone w/ info that can help.

I don't know what is going on with netteller, I know that a couple of their top guys were detained in the US. The stock has been down because of the anti-gambling posture of the US. Depending on the results of the immediate issues, I do like the stock long-term because I think the positive issue about the anti-gambling issue is that it will force all of this to go to court and I don't see how the US can tell off-shore companies how to do business and eventually gambling, poker especially will be okayed by US courts, however that is far out, again, I don't see any short-term positives in online-gambling or money transfer companies, but long-term they may be favorable.

as for the oranges, the best way is too trade commodities, but you need to get in before negative info, not after, as now the LA frost is already factored into prices.

thanks jimmy......

i looked a little more into the neteller suspension....and the judge posted an email from bodog and what might be the "announcement" is that they are officially cutting off US customers to offshores...

sucks, this is when the stock should be killing...right in the swing of the NFL playoffs...

oh well...if i can afford to hold it i will.

what do you think of blockbuster (BBI)

i bought it (albeit right at their 52wk high) after seeing their commercial about trading the movies in at the store that you get through the mail...netflix can't do that.

also, netflix is scrambling because normal dvd's are headed to obsolecence with the release of more and more HD and blu rays...blockbuster will have no problem with the conversion.

Per Jim Cramer's show tonight, Blockbuster is too speculative.

I personally by ETF's, exchange traded funds, and they have really helped my portfolio. I am a buy and hold investor though so your game plan might be different. XLG and SPY are the 2 etf's I invest in every 2 weeks.

not a fan of blockbuster, they have always been behind the curve. i don't agree that the new program can't be matched by netflix as netflix has had a deal with walmart for a while now, they can institute the same program (if they haven't already). i also don't see bluray or digitial dvd being an issue, neither will catch on for a while, i'm definitely not sold on bluray as the players are very expensive right now and i don't know if people will be willing to replace their entire dvd collections with bluray, also bluray only makes a difference if you have a high def tv, not worth much if you don't have the hi def.

thanks guys....

i like cramer too.....and if he says its too speculative, its gotta be out there because he's a huge proponent of speculative investing...

i was unaware of the netflix/walmart connection....should have done more homework i suppose. i didn't make a huge investment, and at least in stocks if you pick a "loser" you won't lose your ass like in sports betting...don't think blockbuster will go out of business so figure i lose commission, worst case.

put a stop loss in on it, if it goes up you are golden, if it tanks the stop loss will kick in and you won't get hammered.

I am sure some will disagree but I suggest Peebody that you max out your 401(k) or employer sponsored retirement plan before you even think about investing in a mutual fund or stock. Actually, you should pay down any bad debt you have first (credit cards and other high interest rate debt) and then max out the 401(k).

I know I goof around on these forums and some don't like me, but when it comes to money I know what you should and should not do. I was actually torn between my current profession and being a stock broker or financial planner. I take money and saving and investing very serious and like to talk about it with others.

i totally agree with you mane, paying off high-interest debt should be number one, if you can't pay it off, i suggest using a home equity loan or line to consolidate so that you can get a lower rate plus tax benefits so that your "real" interest rate is only in the 5-6% range. if you can max out a 401k, no doubt, I do think it's wise to put some money outside of the 401k as you have more options and if you know ur stuff can make some additional money.

I had $20,000 in college loans when I graduated and the rate was/is 7.50%. I graduated in '00 before the interest rates dropped to record lows. My luck I consolidated in '01 and the law states that you cannot consolidate again. Anyways, Discover Card sent me a card and said I could get 0% on the life of a balance transfer. So I transferred the whole college to Discover. That is risky, in my opinion, but it has been great so far. I pay them twice a month so I do not have to worry about default. I would love to buy more ETF's and stocks but I have this damn college loan hanging over me.

i have zero debt. try not to use my credit card for anything except whats necessary (online purchase, automatic payment to my gym, etc..)

as far as 401k....i've been maxed out for 2 yrs (i've been working as a grown up for 4)

my job also matches the first 3%, and matches 1/2 of the next 3%... taken out pretax.

so i'm all set on those fronts.

you're in good shape then. don't stress out too much about day to day investing as the magic of compounding will take over as time goes on. like jimmy said earlier, i'm not too keen on neteller as an investment but i imagine all the bad news is priced in at this point so you can play wait and see. blockbuster doesn't look like a promising story to me, just don't see enough growth there to get excited about.

i don't mind holding things for a while.....it just prevents me from making new investments because right now i have 80% of my account invested, so unless i find some penny stock i like, i won't be doing much.

the problem with neteller is, that i don't know if their business extends much farther than the gambling world. w/o the u.s. business, they will suffer and i fear they could go out of business.

blockbuster, i feel, will at worst just hang around where it is. like i said, i don't mind just holding on....also i read somewhere that they were looking to buy out hollywood video, but that might have already affected the price before i got in.
