Swine flu betting - which country will be hit first?

Ireland’s largest bookie Paddy Power has reported “significant interest” in their betting on which European country will have the first confirmed case of Swine Flu. The suspected flu pandemic already has two people in isolation in a Scottish hospital with suspected cases and authorities across the Euro Zone are in a state of high alert.

Unsurprisingly Paddy Power make Scotland their red-hot 1/3 favourites to have the first confirmed case with Spain 2/1 second favourite, England 8/1 and Ireland a 10/1 shot. The recession-bruised inhabitants of Iceland finally get some news as they are considered the bookies 25/1 rank outsiders to have the first confirmed case.

Paddy Power said “There is obviously huge public interest in this unfolding situation and we’ve received numerous requests over the past 72-hours from punters for odds on what will happen next”

UK books take betting on a huge range. You can contact them and ask for a quote, they will then assess it and get back to you. Some of them are chickens though, I rang Ladbrokes a few weeks ago to try to get them to add a team total for the Blues in a Super 14 rugby game, was going to hammer it for a few reasons. Only one other book offered it and I'd already bet it their for the max. Lads said to me they weren't willing to add it.

On another note the most ridiculous bet I've ever heard with a UK book was from a guy who wanted a quote on Elvis crashing a UFO and killing the Lockness Monster (was in the paper here about 10 years ago) funnily enough they accepted his wager at massive odds lol
