TAB review Aug 31

Rugby and rugby league were the two sports that the bigger punters were interested in last week with mixed success.

Firstly to rugby and the week's biggest wager was a $30,000 multi on Wellington and Canterbury both winning their ITM Cup games at $1.81. Canterbury won easily over Auckland but Wellington had to come from 10-25 down at halftime to get the points in the finish. Also in that particular match we took a bet of $15,600 on Northland at $1.40 while there were several successful halftime bets on Wellington getting a 4 and a half point start. They were $10,000 at $1.85 and another $10,000 at $1.75. Other sizeable rugby bets to report: $28,000 at $1.35 on the Springboks to beat the Wallabies (winner), $10,000 at $1.52 on Taranaki to beat Otago (winner), and $7,000 aat $1.75 on Otago getting an 18 and a half point start from Taranaki (winner).

Monday night rugby league was once again very well received on the sports desk. This week the Canterbury Bulldogs came out of the blocks quickly and lead 16-nil before the Penrith Panthers pegged them back and won with a try in the last seconds of the match. During live betting on the game we took $35,000 at a lay price of $1.45 on the Bulldogs, who were always in front in the game until the 80th minute. On a happier note for the punters there was a winning $15,000 bet at $1.35 on the Wests Tigers to beat the Melbourne Storm.

Baseball was again popular during the week and there was good success for the punter who invested $10,000 at $1.55 on St Louis to beat Washington. Another winner was the $9,952 at $1.52 on Milwaukee to down Pittsburgh but a $7,205 wager at $1.70 on Tampa Bay beating the Boston Red Sox went astray.

Finally - several large racing bets to report. $10,000 at $2.80 on Moudre to win the Hocking Quality in Australia (winner) and $7,000 at $4.50 on Wall Street to win the Mudgway Stakes (beaten by a nose).
