the week's big bets

One of the biggest bets to arrive at the sportsdesk in the past 7days, won't be resulted until January 28th when the Wellington Cup is run at Trentham. . The wager is $20,000 at $3.00 that Booming will win the Cup. The Awapuni galloper was the winner of the Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie on Boxing Day and ran unplaced in last years Wellington Cup. Good luck to that punter when the time comes.

England duly completed their demolition job on Australia, in Sydney, to retain the Ashes, and in doing so they landed some handy bets. The biggest, in live betting, was $20,000 at just $1.03. Other successful bets included, $10,000 at $1.65, $10,000 at $1.25 on England or the draw, and $5,000 at $1.42 head to head. Meanwhile, Pakistan needed just less than 3 days to beat the hapless Kiwis in the opening test match in Hamilton. The bigger punters stayed away from the test until late on the third day when the writing was on the wall. Two wagers in live betting were $9,000 at $1.02 and $6,227 at $1.05. Another cricket bet of note came in live betting on the match from the Caribbean between Hampshire and Canada. The bet was $10,000 at $1.07 on the English county side but it was unsucessful when Canada won easily.

Plenty of action in the world of football during the week with the biggest bet going astray. Thet bet was $25,500 at $1.42 on the table-toping Brisbane Roar to beat the Perth Glory. The match finished in a draw. Speaking of draws - we took $10,000 at $1.30 on Arsenal and Manchester City to draw their Premiership game, which they did. In Spanish football there was a scessful bet of $10,000 at $1.20 on Barcelona to beat Dep.La Corano. And one for the future : $10,000 at $2.30 on West Ham to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of this season.

Plenty of tennis to keep the punters occupied over the past couple of weeks with the ASB Classic for women and the men's Heineken Open , both of those tournaments in Auckland. Greta Arn caused a number of upsets in winning the women's title while the mens competition was still going at the time of writing. In the ASB Classic some successful bets : $10,000 at $1.22 on Wickmeyer to beat Safina, $9,000 at $1.14 on Wickmeyer to beat Lisicki and $6,000 at $1.52 on Arn to account for Goerges. So far in the mens tournament a couple of successful wagers to report : $16,000 at $1.14 on Nalbandian to beat Fognini, and $10,000 at $1.25 on Riba to beat the Kiwi, Rubin Statham, in the qualifying round.
