TAB review May 25

American sport, baseball and ice hockey in particular, was the focus of some big bets last week and it's fair to say that the results were very much in our favour. The largest unsuccessful effort came in the hockey match between San Jose and Chicago and it was $55,000 at a lay price of $1.65 for the match to produce 5 goals or less. Two baseball games that didn't reward the punters were : $45,000 at $1.23 on Philadelphia, with their ace Roy Halliday pitching, to beat Pittsburgh, and $27,700 at $1.60 on the Yankees with their number one man, CC Sabathia, to beat the NY Mets . Also unsuccessful on baseball was a $15,000 wager at $1.68 on the Yankees and Tampa Bay to score 9 runs or less.

The weeks biggest bet was a winner. It was a healthy $50,000 at $1.27 on the Stormers to beat the Waratahs in their Super 14 semi final. That was easily achieved for a profit of $13,500. Other winning rugby bets from the weekend included $10,000 at $1.50 on the Bulls to down the Crusaders, $8,000 at $1.55 on the same option, and at halftime a wager of $7,600 at $1.87 on the Crusaders getting a 17 and a half point start. The Crusaders late try got that bet home.

Other bets of note throughout the week, all winners. $15,000 at $2.10 on Climbing High winning the Waikato Steeplechase, $10,000 at $1.33 on Inter Milan scoring a goal in their European Champions League final against Bayern Munich, $10,000 at $1.20 on Australia scoring a goal against New Zealand and $8,650 at $1.62 on Sri Lanka beating the Black Caps in the second of their T-20 games in Miami.
