TAB review Nov 8

The week's big bets

The All Blacks scraped home to beat a spirited English side 26-16 on Sunday morning and many punters took the shorts that were available on the All Blacks winning. The TAB Sportsdesk received plenty of big bets on the game with the two largest successful bets both at $50,000 with one placed at $1.11 and the other, $1.07. There weren’t many losers on the test match but one punter managed to find a losing bet when electing to place $5,000 on the All Blacks to win with a 21.5 point handicap. In the ITM Cup Final, one astute punter placed $18,000 on the generous odds of $1.40 that was available on Canterbury taking out the cup for the third year in-a-row.

World Series Baseball was popular with the punters last week with game five attracting two massive $20,000 bets at $1.45 on the Texas Rangers to win. Unfortunately for the two punters, the Rangers were soundly beaten by the San Francisco Giants. Game four also attracted a large $10,000 ($1.60) bet as well as two $5,000 ($1.60) bets on Texas. All three were losing bets. Overall it was a great series for the bookies.

Some significant bets were also placed on the NFL this week. Two $10,000 bets were placed at $1.60 and $1.80 on New Orleans Saints to beat Pittsburgh. It was nervous times for the punters with the game all tied up at half-time but the Saints prevailed in the end winning 20-10. College Football also attracted the big money this week with a massive $40,000 winning wager placed on Virginia Tech at $1.17.

The Melbourne Spring Carnival has been attracting plenty of big bets with the two largest going on So You Think to win the Melbourne Cup. $23,000 ($3.30) and $20,000 ($3.00). Other big bets on Melbourne Cup day included $10,000 on Obsession ($2.20, loser), $10,000 on On The Level ($2.50, winner), $10,000 on Our Rosina ($2.40, loser), $10,000 on Anzac Star ($2.40, winner) and several large winning bets on Nightime Jockey including one at $8,000 ($2.00). Mount Gambier races in South Australia were subject to a sizeable successful bet of $10,000 on Wednesday with Evenmoreaction winning the third on the card there.

On Saturday, Black Caviar was very well supported with one punter prepared to outlay $10,000 ($1.70) on her beating home Hay List. She duly saluted without being tested. Back home, the bookies were relieved when He’s Remarkable ran out of real estate enabling Jimmy Choux to hold on to victory in the 2000 Guineas. Had He’s Remarkable saluted, the bookies would have had to shell out $245,000 to one punter who had taken out two sizeable multi bets. One ticket had Rafael Nadal in the US Open (winner), So You Think in the Cox Plate (winner) and He's Remarkable while the other had So You Think in the Cox Plate (winner) into He's Remarkable.
