Taking the fearing death thread to the next step...

If you were diagnosed with a condition that was pretty much fatal, would you take yourself out, or go through the treatment until your demise?

I think we should change our outlook with regards to suicide under certain conditions.... everyone deserves to die with some sort of dignity, I'd like the choice to pull my plug rather than go through discomfort and have a negligible chance of survival.

I would stay alive as long as I could for my family. I think it is very selfish to do what makes you comfortable. Now if I am on life support and brain dead with no chance then be done but I am a fighter not a quitter.

Then the question becomes what is more painful, having your family watch you wither away, or watching you take yourself out on your own terms.

Considering that I am in a country that has socialized medicine, like your country might be in time, it might not be looked upon as selfish. You might be liberating funds in "the system" to help someone else who realistically has a chance of recovery.

Agree 100% If my dog is needlessly suffering with no positive outlook, I can take him to a vet and get him humanely put down. It would be selfish of me to not do otherwise.

I think lot's of things that are taboo such as assisted suicide are a result of ignorance on the part of culture and society. It's culturally considered "selfish" to take oneself out, But I would argue that it's selfish of society to dictate whether or not an individual can go out with dignity and on his/her own terms exercising their own free will.

If I was elderly losing my mind and/or terminally ill and a burden upon my family/society I would have no qualms with taking myself out. Screw societal dogma.

I would take 3 people out before I killed myself. The last thing I am going to do is cost my family more money to keep me alive. Spent over a million to date and this body has had the last surgery I will allow. To each their own.

A thought provoking thread DD, good stuff. Strip joints closed in the Wall today??

As for me, circumstances, situation and burdens would all have to be handicapped before i decide where my action goes.

I would get a diagnosis on how long I had to live a "comfortable" life before things started going downhill. During that prognosis time frame I would travel and see things I have always wanted to see. Experience the world as others have known it and I haven't.....when my situation starts to deteriorate, I would want to go peacefully, quietly, and knowing my family understands why.
