Tampa Mother Shot Her Two Kids Because They Were Talking Back

Julie Schenecker Murder: Mother Shoots 2 Kids For Being 'Mouthy'

January 28, 2011 at 01:02 pm

Julie Schenecker of Florida was arrested for shooting her two children because they talked back.

Tampa police arrested Julie Schenecker Friday on two counts of first-degree murder.

A Tampa police spokesperson told media that Julie Schenecker claims she killed her 13-year-old son Powers "Beau" Schenecke and 16-year-old daughter Calyx Powers Schenecker because "they were mouthy."

Tampa Police claim they received a call from the concerned mother of Julie Schenecker. Officers arrived on the scene to find Schenecker covered in blood.

In the garage, police found Powers shot in the side of the head. In an upstairs room, Calyx was found dead at a computer. There did not appear to have been a struggle, police said.

"It appears that the children never saw it coming," McElroy said.

Father Parker Schenecker is currently in Qatar serving in the US military.

**take that, Tiger Mom!

Update: Mom accused of killing kids under medical evaluation

TAMPA - The mom accused of fatally shooting her two teenage children because they were "mouthy" is in intensive care at Tampa General Hospital, authorities said.

Julie Schenecker, 50, was taken to the hospital for evaluation shortly before midnight Friday, sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon said. She was suffering from a medical condition she had before being arrested on two counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities did not specify the condition, but Schenecker was shaking uncontrollably as she was led from police headquarters Friday afternoon. After being booked, she was taken to the jail's medical ward for observation.

Schenecker had been scheduled to make her first court appearance Saturday morning, but that was postponed.

Police said Schenecker shot her 13-year-old son Beau twice in the head as they drove to their Tampa Palms home from soccer practice Thursday evening, then went to her daughter Calyx's bedroom and shot the 16-year-old twice in the head as she was doing her homework.

Schenecker shot the children with a .38-caliber revolver she had bought five days before, investigators said.

When officers arrived at the 3,300-square-foot home in the gated Ashington Reserve community early Friday in response to a call from Schenecker's worried mother, Schenecker was on the back porch in slippers and a bloody robe.

She told investigators she killed her children because "they talked back, they were mouthy and she was tired of it," police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

Schenecker said she had planned to kill the children and herself, police said. They said she left a detailed note with her plans.

Police seized the gun.

Beau was an eighth-grader at Liberty Middle School and played soccer. Calyx was a sophomore at King High School, where she was in the International Baccalaureate program and a member of the cross country team.

Schenecker's husband Parker is a colonel in the U.S. Army and is assigned to U.S. Central Command, where he works in the intelligence directorate. He was in Qatar in the Middle East when his children were killed and was notified of the tragedy by MacDill Air Force Base officials.

Police said Julie Schenecker's mother, Pat Powers, called them from Texas because she couldn't reach her daughter, whom she thought was depressed.

Powers declined to comment today.

Sylvia Carroll, who attended Muscatine High School in Iowa with Schenecker, told The Associated Press that Schenecker was a popular student who excelled in basketball in the late 1970s.

"I'm just in shock," Carroll said. "I can't believe this."

Julie Schenecker previously was an intelligence collector in Munich, Germany, working as a Russian linguist for the U.S. Army, former colleague K.C. Dreller said.

"She had a Type A personality, but everybody I worked with was one because of the nature of our business," he said.

Schenecker coached an officers' volleyball team in Munich.

"She was a very good volleyball player, and she was a pretty good coach," Dreller said.

News of her arrest left him at a loss for an explanation.

"I can't imagine how things got to where they were at," he said.

Yeah, I'm not really sure that this is the story that should inspire a gun-control debate.

As Randy said, she would've killed them one way or the other if she wanted to. That's usually the case with most crimes. In this case, she snuck-up/surprised them....she just as easily could've stabbed them or hit them over the head with a shovel.

Honesty, I think intelligence tests should have one question: Should guns be banned in the US? If you answer "yes", you fail.

All it would do is prevent law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves.

Making guns illegal would only ensure that criminals with guns greatly outnumber non-criminals with guns.

If you think otherwise, just remind yourself that drugs, robbery, rape, assault, and drunk driving are illegal, too. I might be wrong, but I think some people still do drugs.
