Think of the worst tv station......

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—University of Texas regents on Wednesday gave their blessing to the school’s pursuit of a so-called Longhorn network of cable TV sports programming.

Regents met behind closed doors with school President William Powers Jr. to discuss the plan. The regents’ academic affairs committee then publicly voted to allow Powers to pursue and sign a contract.

ESPN has confirmed it is in talks with Texas to distribute the proposed network. ESPN and school officials have declined to discuss how much it would be worth or other details. Fox Sports, reportedly interested in developing the network, declined comment Wednesday.

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said the school is “working on a deal but (we) do not have it yet.”

Texas has been considering launching its own network for several years. It was one of the reasons the school chose to stay in the Big 12 rather than accept an offer to join the Pac-10, which wanted to control broadcast rights.

“We have a national brand with the Longhorn, and we feel it’s something we can do,” Dodds said.

Texas is expected to model its network after the Big Ten Network, a 3-year-old venture that is reportedly delivering about $70 million a year to the conference. A Longhorn Network would be Texas-specific programing, although Texas football and basketball rights are now part of deals the Big 12 conference has with ESPN/ABC and Fox.

Dodds said the school began considering a Texas network a few years ago when the Big 12 members starting talking about a league network.

“We felt a Texas network would work better than people seeing a 12th of Texas on a conference network,” Dodds said.

The regents’ motion mentioned building television studio space at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Good luck - that's a lot of time to fill with S the casual longhorn fan isn't going to watch... you take football and basketball out and you have basically nothing... I mean, yeah baseball... but really who watches college baseball? I do, but I love baseball... I'm probably in the minority

Well, I actually think that one can survive b/c it encompasses the whole Conference (all teams)... so they draw a LOT more.

Don't get me wrong... Texas has a great brand and logo... but a lot of those fans are "T-shirt" fans... all of them will watch football, no doubt. Basketball... maybe 50% of the football fans will watch... That being said... the Big 12(10) has those rights... so you have basically what.. baseball, volleyball and soccer? You'll have maybe 8% of the football crowd watching baseball (maybe a little more come playoff time)... The other sports... a combined 1% tops...

I watch the Big Ten Network now & again, and I find it insightful at times. Though, I have to admit, some of the ladies they have on are pretty nice to look at.

Funny enough, I tuned in last night & they were showing womens volleyball. A handful of the players looked really hot & they were slapping each other on the ass, it made for nice viewing the entire 3 min I saw lol.
