Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Vince Coleman were an exciting crew when they hung out together.

Anyone remember when Coleman threw a "cherry bomb" into a crowd from the back of a moving jeep and blinded a little girl in one eye?

Not in this country, nor was it in England until the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, when French-speaking Norman monarchs corrupted the language to begin what is known as the "dark ages of English."

Noah Webster (yes, the dictionary guy) has recorded the original -or spelling as the accepted one since 1828.

American English is actually more "proper" than the current British English in most cases.

Sorry, these are things I happen to know.

As a fan of language, especially etymologies and language evolution, I own probably 40 books on the subject. My recreational reading consists primarily of language history and theoretical physics.

Yes, I actually knew that Webster elimated most of the newer British spellings in his 1828 edition. Strangely, that is the kind of thing I choose to remember, mostly because I'm a word geek.
