Tree Root Question

I have an old maple tree which has several rather large roots above ground. This tree is also mounding up and is now approximately 10 inches above ground level. Would I damage the tree by cutting off the roots sticking out of the ground or by cutting into them to level the ground? Or should I put some top soil on top to cover it up?

Suggestions?

If you cut or topsoil a root you can cause long term damage to the tree.

Your best bet is to mulch around the root.

The only other way would be to dig up around the root and a put a root barrier around the root which would prevent it from growing anymore out of the soil.

My choice is mulch b-cuz that's the easier alternative.
