Underachievers or overachievers ?

obviously, I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan and I have often asked myself about if I wished I was a fan of, say Ohio State, USC, or Texas and my team was in the limelight and playing for more titles etc ?

But ya know what, I will pick on Texas here, but Texas underachieves almost every single year in almost every single sport. IMHO of course. They always have the top rated recruiting classes too.
That would be hard for me to handle.

On the other hand, my Iowa football team has a very humble coach, he does things the right way, he recruits kids that seem to fit in his system and thinking ( this years recruiting class of 21 or so, had something like 19 team captains and 15 honor society student/athletes ), and we overachieve in most cases, ie we have won some January bowl games recently against LSU, FLorida, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech and lost two real close ones against Florida and Texas.

Now on the other hand, the shoe will be on the other foot next weekend when Iowa's wrestling team competes here in Omaha for the NCAA title. And ANYTHING less than the Championship will not be acceptable. Period. And that is not a fun position, because you have to win the whole thing or its disappointment and that is probably how a bunch of Texas fans feel most years and in most sports.

thoughts ??

lol...please

2 national championship appearances in the last 5 years including a win over what was considered to be one of the best if not the best team ever. Won like 7 of the last 8 bowls or something. Baseball team racks up natl championships and national championship appearances. Basketball team which texas doesnt even give 2 shits about makes the tourny just about every year and has made a few deep runs.

i would worry about your own school if i were you....texans fans know what it feels like to have won national championships this decade

congrats on your wrestling accomplishments which may be a minor headldine on espnU

I think saying the big schools (i.e. Texas) underachieve because they don't always win the NC when they have the best recruiting class is inaccurate. Only one team is going to win the NC in a sport each year so more than an NC has to be put into figuring out if they met expectations. So much flukey crap happens in sports to judge strictly on that.

My thoughts are I would love for U of Minnesota to be in the hunt of getting the top recruits year in and year out giving the team opportunity to compete for NC's each and every year. Instead we have to sit and hope we can get the one big in state recruit to commit and find some other lesser recruits that fit the system well.

hey be47320 I do worry about my own school and could really give a rats ass about texas- I was just trying to put myself in the position of other fans thoughts are expectations - period and hope that when we do win our 25th or whatever ncaa championship we act respectful of it and not pompous , even though it is a minor sport that maybe gets second page headlines

whatever

I can't believe he said Texas, their bball is their worst sport and they still get people drafted like every year. TJ Ford should have been great

Texas baseball is like top 5 every year

the reason I picked texas ,and I just gave them for an example, is because they always have the best players- sort of like the Yankees- thus if they don't win it all, is it a disappointment and thus an underachievment

secondbase..i dont think you understand the concept of overachieving and underachieving on these levels. The fact that teams like texas and florida compete year in and year out for national championships in every major sport and has some great success makes it impossible to call them "underachievers". So are you saying the yankees underachieve too because they dont win the world series every single year? lol....this is the highest level of athletics pal.

be- you are the one that does not understand what my post was all about, so it seems that an lol is for you and maybe that 'underachieving ' reading and comprehension ability of yours is showing up here - lol, sorry
and yes, since I am a Yankee fan, it is a disappointing year when they don't win it all, simply because they buy themselves what most feel are the best players.
