unemployment & ss checks

can you collect both unemployment and social security checks at same time ?
say you get laid off and also are eliglble for social security

i would think not. Unenployment at its core assumes that the person actively seeks employment and wants to work. Social security infers that the persons work quarters will no longer be accumulated and therefore is finished working/seeking work and of course is of age.
Just as an fyi, if you are laid off really close to collecting social security you may want to consider not ruining your high level of income by collecting unemployment and thereby lowering your last couple work quarters, which is a part of the social security award calculation. i realize that most people will not be affected by this but it is worth considering.

I'm sure you can. For instance, if you start collecting your SS at 62, you are still eligible to work, often at something close to a full-time job. If you were laid off that job, there's no reason you couldn't collect your unemployment insurance as well.
