Utah attorney general says BCS may violate antitrust laws

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's attorney general is investigating the Bowl Championship Series for a possible violation of federal antitrust laws after an undefeated Utes team was left out of the national title game for the second time in five years.

Attorney General Mark Shurtleff contends the BCS unfairly puts schools like Utah, which is a member of a conference without an automatic bid to the lucrative bowl games, at a competitive and financial disadvantage.

Shurtleff said Tuesday that his office is still in the initial stages of reviewing the Sherman Antitrust Act to see if a lawsuit can be filed. To succeed in a lawsuit, Shurtleff would have to prove a conspiracy exists that creates a monopoly.

A message left with BCS administrator Bill Hancock was not immediately returned.

i would normally agree with you Jack, but i think this is fair for Utah to look after its contituents. If you calculate the amount of Money Utah would have earned by going to 2 bowls in the last 5 years; and then you consider their budget and what could be done with that money. nevermind the tate also taking its cut, and yes, i think this is worth their time.

But you think our political leaders should be worried about college football? If Utah cares that much, they should move to the Pac 10, don't you think?

The Pac 10 has two openings. BYU will never get in because they hold their Church above the "State", in this case the "State" being the Pac 10, and will not play on Sundays. This opens the door for Utah and one other team. If the Pac 10 chooses to go this route, it will force the Big 10 to add a team, so they end up with 12 teams. This will give the BCS 5 conferences with 12 teams and 5 conference championships. There are currently 5 BCS games. The Big East, with only 8 teams, would be dropped from the "automatic" list. The math works out perfectly.

the athletic dept of the university..not the university itself..and the money would have stayed in the athletic dept..big deal..really doesn't serve the university on a whole

competition has nothing to do with it..they play who is in their conference and also those teams played decent out of conference teams..who does the big teams really play outside of conference? shit schools like citadel and the like..so if you look at it like that..compeition itself doesnt matter..it is the idealism that only the powerhouses belong
