Sports Betting bill

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comartin’s sports betting bill moves forward in Parliament
November 1, 2011

MP Joe Comartin’s (NDP – Windsor-Tecumseh) private member’s bill to allow betting on single sporting events passed its second reading in Parliament on Tuesday. The bill will now go to committee and go through a third reading before a final vote.

During the debate on Tuesday night, MPs from the Liberal and Conservative parties also spoke in favour of the bill. The parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Justice also spoke in support, Comartin’s assistant Geoffrey Hall told The Star.

The proposed bill would amend the criminal code to legalize sports betting on football, baseball or basketball games, for example, at casinos and race tracks. Currently, people can only bet on a series or group of of games either in lotteries or at casinos.

Comartin has said that not permitting this type of betting has allowed organized crime to flourish while cities like Windsor lose out on the potential revenue and tourism dollars from Canada the U.S. Only one state – Nevada – allows betting on single sporting events.

This was the second time Comartin tabled the bill. The first time was in February but at that point it did not receive enough support to move forward.

Can't wait for this to happen. Hopefully it will transfer over to Quebec as well since mise-aux-jeu is a complete joke.

Just a heads up on this single betting bill. For anyone who missed it this morning on "Between the Lines" a local radio capping show one of the on air hosts said that if the bill passes he had word that it would be a 20 cent line to be dealt. So nothing to get excited about here.

Just another way for the government south of the Canadian border to find a reason to restrict us. If they won't get paid then it won't happen.

Figured the cocksuckers would have a 50 cent line so this is actually a bargain.

me too< but one of the main arguments to legalize single game wagering was to stop organized crime. this 20 cent line wont slow the locals down at all. i was hoping for a lower line so they local guys would take it down to 5 cents.
