Cool What is your deninition between the difference of a game or a sport?

oh crap typo on definition
lool

I've heard the terrm sports fishing ,
never considered it a sport.., a hobby imo

Is Nascar a sport?

Golf?

NFL could be coinsidered both IMO

is poker playing defense/offense a sport?

summer/olympic games - synchronized swimming -
is that a sport?

my definition would be if you're playing a game
you could get injured in,
that is a "sport"

thought..

IMO an activity has to require use of "athletic" ability to be considered a sport........with that said I would rule out fishing, poker, curling, and maybe bowling as being a "sport"

NASCAR is a tricky on as it obvioulsy takes "skill" but I don't know that you have to have a heck of a lot of athletic abiltiy to drive a car

If you would consider Nascar one with "skill" then I would think you would have to throw bowling and fishing in there, and maybe poker

see my definition of a sport again........"requires some ATHLETIC ability"

guess I should have noted that ALL the other things I mentioned (curling, bowling, poker, fishing) require some sort of skill.....but doesn't mean it meets MY defintion of "sport"

but not all players of games that are considered sports are considered athletes...i.e john kruk, cecil fielder...so athletic ability doesn't constitute a sport

Just because Fielder and Kruk are big guys doesn't mean they weren't athletic/athletes....as is the case with a big offensive linemen in football......those select few big guys are athletic enough to make a living doing it.....plenty of big guys in the world but most are just that, big guys with no athletic ability

I think this is a great discussion. I am a big fan of golf and the PGA Tour. The reason I mentioned both a fan of golf and a fan of the PGA Tour is because there is a difference. I see it all the time in discussion boards when mentioning Tiger. Alot of people say that they are a fan of golf because of Tiger, but that doesn't mean that they are a fan of the PGA Tour or everything that comes with the sport and competetion. I don't follow the NBA nor am I fan, but I did watch Jordan in his prime, does that make me a fan of the NBA, or just a fan of Jordan?

This brings me to the point of the argument of sport or activity. The ones that say it is just an activity are the ones that say that they play golf on the weekends, drink beer, and have a good time, and anybody can do it no matter what kind of athletic ability they have. Well, that is true, but I also can argue that I can go out to the local gym and shoot hoops, go run 3 miles, go throw the football around, go to the batting cage and take some swings, or go to the bowling alley and put up some type of score, but all of the before mentioned activities that I have just mentioned are just that, activities for ME. To do all of these so called "weekend activities" does not require any athletic ability on my part. But to be competetive amongst the best in the world at said particular sport, you have to have an incredible amount of ability. I am a 5 handicap on the course, but do I think I am capable of competing in anything remotely close to a tournament? Absolutely not. One of the best quotes I have ever heard is that "a scratch golfer is closer to a 20 handicap than a PGA Tour player". You can say this about any sport. Just because anybody can go to a "poker night" or go to the local park and make a 3 pointer, does not mean it is just an activity. At the highest level, I consider it a sport.
