When it comes to HOTELS.....

i use tripadvisor religously for making my hotel choices, but didnt know what Mallers do when it comes to hotels....

Depends if I go out of town to party or with the wife on vacation or a get away for a few days. If it`s partying I`ll stay at a motel 6 or something equivalent. If it`s vacation or a get away I`ll check hotels out on the computer. Always like to stay at a very nice place when I`m with my wife.

i like to take wendy to the no tel mo tels. otherwise i'm definitely checking to make sure they are nice.

Points/Status

Status can be useful if you need to get into a certain hotel as most times they have a special number you can call to get in on a "sold-out" date.

Also - if others don't already know this - work on one chain at a time and then see if other chains will match. Have had success with getting highest status level on Hilton and then asking Starwood to match it.

I found the one near Times Square in Manhattan (with the Whiskey Blue bar inside) to be a huge rip-off. $300+ a night for a room that looked more like a college dorm room than a hotel room. The decor of the hotel was nice, but the room was a joke. Get this...no drawers for your clothes. Only a closet, which had one of those plastic boxy things hanging from the rack, that you were supposed to stuff your clothes into. Haven't been to any other W's, so I can't comment on them. Personally I think the New York Palace is the best hotel for the $$ in Manhattan.

Vegas: Wherever I can get comped. Usually MGM Properties (NYNY, Monte Carlo) or Coast Casino's (Orleans a few times)

Other cities: Usually travel w/ family (wife, 3 kids) so a pool is a priority. I had great luck w/ Priceline and getting 2 beds until 3-4 years ago when I booked a room w/ them and they gave me 1 bed. Haven't booked on there since.

I also use cheapoair dot com for motels.

Also, on short notice, you can go to your favorite motel website and under "PROMO CODE", put in LMD (Last Minute Deals).

I've saved some, not a whole lot on that, but 10-20%.

Usually within 2 weeks of travel.
