Why do they call it the World series?

I get this Question everytime I go to england.. why the hell do we call it the world series when it only involves america? Normal response from the brits is we think the world is america. Comments?

i have asked that many times...just like when the nba, mlb, and nfl call it's champions "world champions"...really makes no sense to me...other than ego and trying to think they are the only country in the world

The Toronto Blue Jays are in Canada.... does that legitimize the term "World Champion?"

don't think so...look at nhl...there have been nhl champions from canada before...and you never hear the stanley cup winners calling themselves "world champions"

Isn't that because there is a hockey tournament amongst world teams thats called the world championship?

Bingo. It may be presumptious to call it the World Series, but you will not find a professional club team anywhere else in the world that would beat the American World Series champion in a 7 game series.

but what about the other games. Like NBA, there are a crap load of European teams that have some great talent who are able to compete with Sperms and Pistons.

Didnt america's baseball not even qualify for the olympics?

And im sure a couple of japanese teams would give these american teams a run for thier money, you named one country that has a teams outside the US. there are like 10x more that play baseball and not involved.... It shouldnt be called world series, should be called American series or somecrap
