Why are thier so many people in the toll booths?

I never understood why someone needs to hand you your toll ticket.

Dont they have machines for that. I can understand collecting but not giving tickets out. What a waste of money. THey make like $15+ an hour.

plus half of them are rude.

WASTE OF MONEY, THANK YOU UNIONS

There is a downside that most people dont notice about that job. Yes it does pay a decent hourly wage HOWEVER you have to be exposed to all those emissions all the time. wouldn't be surprised if some people get cancer or infections.

At this point with all the job lose and high unemployment, let them have the job. I know of some small toll booths that just give you a ticket or you just throw the money in. I know there is one on the way to Atlantic City

the thing I hate is when we are promised the tolls will be taken out once the highway is paid for - and never is taken out... I know there's maintenance, but sh*t, a few Million should take care of that...

I'm talking about removing the booths and stop taking money as promised... not getting anything back...

New York State Thruway (I-90) was paid for years ago but they decided to keep the tolls

The problem with the toll booths is that they are started to offset costs or pay for the construction of highways. Politicians promise to remove them once the costs are offset but then they claim they are still needed to cover the costs of maintenance. This is only partly true. In Pa the govenor just took a 230 million dollar look from the toll road (turnpike) to cover the cost of maintenance for the other state roads. Politicians view the income gained by the toll roads as a profit and factor it into budgets and slush funds. They then use the money to cover cost of other projects or programs and stte they were able to do so without raising taxes. Makes them look good and helps keep them in office. Profits from toll roads arent the only slush funds these politicians have but it usually is the biggest one in some states.

How exactly does a toll booth ticket work? Never heard of those. They just expect you to pay it based on the honor system?

It can vary like if i cross the bridge from Philly to New Jersey its free but coming back from Jersey into Philly it cost $3. Now I know of a few toll booths that DO work on an honour system, however if you dont pay expect a bill.

When I use to go to my g-fathers up around Williamstown, Pa about a 4 hour drive you would get a "ticket" when you entered the turnpike and you would have to pay based on how far on the turnpike you traveled. Most toll booths have a person ready to collect your money.

there are 4 or so bridges linking New Jersey and Philly with prices in or aounrd the $3 mark
