Why the US should regulate gambling - uva3021 Article

Why the US should regulate gambling.

This country was built on sex, booze, and gambling. As long as this country is thriving, those three vices will remain a part of our society. So why has gambling become taboo?

There will always be people who will become addicted or degenerates when it comes to anything of a compulsive nature. If a person isn't gambling, their eating. If they aren't eating, they're drinking. If they aren't drinking, they're smoking. But gambling is a "crime?". "There's no place for gambling in our society." "We don't incorporate ourselves with gamblers." "Gamblers are bad." "We aren't setting a good example for children." These are the things you hear from people, from our government.

Gambling can be regulated throughout the US as it is in Vegas and offshore books. Regulate gambling, and rid the streets of bookies named "Vinnie the Chin" and "Sal the Knife" taking bets from people with no money. Reglulate gambling and not worry about fixed games, shaved points or what happen at ASU with Stevin "Slack" Smith.

One could argue that gambling builds character, and is a good tool to learn money management. Gambling teaches a little humility, and at times builds confidence. Hit a 3-teamer on Saturday and walk around the rest of the week with your shoulders held high, and more confidence in yourself. Go 0-3, well that's okay, be humble and get 'em next week. Gamblers know the rollercoaster of emotions one can go through any given week when it comes to gambling, which translates into newly respected views on other aspects of life.

The argument one may hear is gamblers hurt themselves and others around them because they waste their money, and begin to think of gambling and only gambling, clouding their vision of the ones they should care about and what is happening around him/her. But maybe 5% of gamblers act that way. Don't punish 95% of the responsible ones because 5% of people let gambling control their lives. A higher percentage of people abuse alchohol, sex, or have a problem with obesidity, than gambling. Yet gambling has been labeled as pure evil.

I'm only 21 years old who has been betting regularly for just two years, now. I invariably wonder around in a state of indifference, so I'm not very emotional and do not have a compulsive nature to any extreme. Gambling to me is a fun activity, and I don't feel I am hurting anybody by sitting at a computer and picking the over/under on the Akron game on Saturday.

I thought the article is well written, but I do have some issues with it. First of all, gambling is regulated by the Federal Government. If I read you correctly, you seem to be concerned about the feds closing down the OFFSHORE sports books which is a whole different ballgame than Vegas.

Now I agree with you that the Feds could accomplish a lot more by closing the offshore books but allowing Vegas to run on line wagering in the country and thus, allowing themselves to collect the taxes from the winners, just like they do in Vegas or other wagering establishments in the country.

As far as your premise goes, I can guarantee you that the vast majority of people in this country do not gamble on sporting activities other than horse racing, and could care less about those who do. If you go to a race track, you will find about 50-60% of the gamblers there do not wager on football, excluding the superbowl, which is mostly the office pool type of wager. This country was not built on sex, booze, and gambling. They have had a growing part of the lifestyle we live today, but gaming is still minor compared to sex, and booze. Also, I would like to know when sex became a vice, unless you have to buy it. I also recall some amendment being passed that allows the sales of alcohol, so I guess booze is not a vice either.

I will post my article soon, so you will get a shot at me. I do appreciate the effort. I think that the mall needs more articles like this and less threads saying..."I like Team A. GL"
