Would this be considered fixing...
In VaTech's 52-21 win over Wake Forest, some interesting things were going on. For 95% of the game neither team would even bother trying to rush the QB, which for VaTech is highly unusual. Bud Foster, VT's long time defensive coordinator, typically loves to mix it up and disrupt a younger QB. Wake was starting a freshman in his first career start.
Now one thing to take into consideration, VaTech's head coach, Frank Beamer, and Wake's coach Jim Grobe are very good friends. Not just in passing but for years have had a family to family, thanksgiving dinner type of relationship. Based on talent alone, it would have taken a borderline miracle, or just a terrible terrible game by the Hokies to lose that game, and both coaches knew it. And it turns out that Wake was down to their 4th string QB, who is basically their last hope at that position all year. Imagine a team with 7 games left and no QB. It would seriously be a struggle to even make it through the remainder of the season. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Grobe called Beamer or vice versa, perhaps the Wednesday or Thursday before the game, and basically came to an agreement of sorts. You don't blitz I don't blitz. I could imagine a scenario where Grobe calls Beamer and says, "hey look buddy, we are in desperation mode with our QB and I'm worried if he gets hurt, whether or not we will even have enough to make it through the season. You guys are going to beat us by 3 TDs, how about we call off the blitz?" Watching the game it was very strange, both QBs had all day to throw, even Wake's, which again would be beyond surprising given Bud Foster's typical game plan. Additionally, after the game the VaTech post game commentators and interviewer's hardly even mentioned the lack of aggressiveness on defense, and the defensive game plan is usually topic A. Perhaps the commentators were privy to this info. This wasn't just a skewed observation from the upper deck, upon a second viewing earlier today it was obvious something was going on, or at least there was an understanding between the coaches. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but how often do you think thing's like this happen to occur?
