The Philadelphia Flyers are having their failure rubbed in their face through these Stanley Cup playoffs. Not only do Flyers fans like myself have to see the New Jersey Devils face the New York Rangers in the Eastern finals, we have seen Ilya Bryzgalov's old team and Mike Richards and Jeff Carter's new team steamroll through the West.

But Richards, Carter and the Los Angeles Kings are steamrolling to near historic proportions, as the eighth seed looks more and more like a No. 1. Even Carter is getting into the mix and rubbing salt in the Flyers' wounds, as his hat trick and two power play goals led the way in a 4-0 win over the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 2 on May 15.

Carter had an even harder time than Richards after being traded away last summer, as he had to go to the last place Columbus Blue Jackets first. After getting injured and wasting away for a bottom feeder, the former Flyers star was traded again and reunited with fellow former Flyer Richards in Los Angeles. Yet since the Kings were struggling just to reach the playoffs, not much was expected to come of it.

Weeks later, Carter has racked up a hat trick in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals while his old team is stuck at home. With the Kings up 2-0, having badly outshot the Coyotes twice in a row and having improved to 7-0 on the road, Phoenix is suddenly fading fast against Los Angeles - like the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues before them.

Like the Flyers did against the Devils, the Coyotes came apart mentally while barely getting any offense to speak of. Mike Smith has far outshined Bryzgalov as his replacement in Phoenix, yet like Bryzgalov in the last round, Smith has had to stand on his head in this round and has not held up. As such, the Coyotes are collapsing almost as suddenly as the Flyers did - which makes sense since former Philadelphia stars are playing a part in it.

Richards and Carter led the seventh-seeded Flyers to a miracle Stanley Cup finals berth in 2010. Yet doing this in reduced roles with the eighth-seeded Kings, especially after being tossed from Philadelphia like they were, has been an even greater accomplishment.

The Flyers traded them to make room for Bryzgalov, yet much of Philadelphia has lived to regret him coming here. It could get even worse if Richards and Carter wind up hoisting the Stanley Cup for the Kings, of all franchises, while the Flyers remain Cup-less for a 37'th straight year.

No matter who wins it all, it will be especially painful for Philadelphia, since it played a part in helping all four conference finalists get this far. But if Richards and Carter take the Cup, it would be the biggest argument yet that the Flyers screwed up in getting Bryzgalov and clearing too much space for him. Yet that looks more like a realistic outcome with each Kings road blowout - and ex-Flyer hat trick.
