Pittsburgh Getting an Arena Football Team

Absent from the city since 1990, Arena Football is coming back to the city of Pittsburgh, and the team will play home games at the Consol Energy Center.

The team, whose ownership group includes Lynn Swann, will rent the arena from the Penguins for home contests. Neither the Pens nor the Steelers will be a part of the ownership group.

More information will become available at a press conference on Friday, including the team's name, logo, and more ownership details.

In addition to Pittsburgh, three teams have been added to the league for the 2011 season, including San Jose, Kansas City and Philadelphia. The AFL's 2010 season was its first since 2008, with the entire 2009 campaign lost due to financial issues within the league.

Pittsburgh's original Arena League team, the Gladiators, called the Civic Arena home from 1987-1990, qualifying for the championship game but losing both times. The '87 ArenaBowl, played at the Igloo, featured an open roof...and Denver winning in a 45-16 rout before 13,232.

After the 1990 season, the Pittsburgh franchise relocated to Tampa Bay, where it became known as the Storm. The Storm will go for their sixth AFL title Friday night in ArenaBowl XXIII in Spokane against the Spokane Shock. Sounds like a natural rival to me!

The Pittsburgh Power franchise (pittsburghpowerfootball.com) was introduced to the world at a press conference this morning. The Power ownership group is led by Matt Shaner, CEO of Shaner Investments, which owns the Marriott City Center across from Consol Energy Center. The group also includes Steeler Hall of Fame WR Lynn Swann.

The Power, which will play home games at the Consol Center starting in 2011, is expected to name coaches within three weeks. They are also looking for players (contract them at team@pittsburghpowerfootball.com) and the obligatory dance team. The Power joins Kansas City, San Jose, and Philadelphia as a part of the largest single-season expansion in AFL history.

QB Bernard Morris, who played at Marshall from 2003-2007, officially became the team's first player under contract when he signed with the team on Monday.

Undrafted out of college, Morris landed with the af2 Arena League's Arkansas franchise in 2008, then made the jump to Arena Football 1 in January of this year when he signed with Jacksonville. It was in Arkansas that he played for current Power coach Chris Siegfried, who was the team's offensive coordinator at the time. When Siegfried got the job as Jacksonville's head coach, Morris once again joined him. It sounds as if they've become sort of like a player/coach package deal, a modern-day minor-league version of Bill Parcells and Richie Anderson if you will.

Morris goes 6'4", 215 pounds, and played QB, LB, WR, and special teams for Jacksonville last season. He started at Marshall for three seasons, throwing for 3,149 yards and 17 touchdowns in his senior season.

Morris will go forward as the team's starting QB, although they will add competition when training camp rolls around. But for now Morris is the man, especially when listening to the people in charge of such decisions:

"His phone's been ringing off the hook, my phone's been ringing off the hook with players that want to come and play for Pittsburgh," Shaner said. "People are very excited to play for the Pittsburgh Power."

The team plans to introduce Chris Siegfried as Coach at a news conference at Consol Energy Center this afternoon.

Pittsburgh Power today announced the signing of 15 new Players to its inaugural 2011 roster.

The Players include Pittsburgh native Anthony Morelli, former-NFL kicker Paul Edinger, AFL veteran Terrance Carter, as well as local stars Kenny Lewis of Penn Hills and Mike Washington of Aliquippa. Four of the players signed, Morelli, Washington, Tyrrell Herbert and Richi Anderson, attended the Power's open tryouts last month.
