Preview: Pittsburgh at Columbus
When: 7:00 PM ET, Friday, February 17, 2017
Where: Nationwide Arena, Columbus, Ohio

One day after teammate Sidney Crosby reached a milestone, Evgeni Malkin vies for one of his own when the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday in a battle for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Crosby hit the 1,000-point plateau in Thursday's overtime win over against Winnipeg and Malkin looks to notch his 500th career assist versus Columbus.

The 30-year-old Russian has been in fine form since returning from a seven-game absence because of a lower-body injury, recording a goal and an assist in each of his two contests, and trails Crosby (64 points) by six points for the league lead. The Penguins are five points behind division-leading Washington and two ahead of the third-place Blue Jackets, who improved to 2-2-0 on their seven-game homestand with Wednesday's 5-2 triumph over Toronto. Captain Nick Foligno has scored in each of his last two contests to reach the 20-goal mark for the second time in his career. Columbus has earned three of a possible four points against the Penguins thus far this season, rolling to a 7-1 victory at home Dec. 22 while dropping a 4-3 overtime decision in Pittsburgh earlier this month.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, Sportsnet, TVA, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (36-13-7): Crosby registered a goal and two assists Thursday, with his first point of the night making him the 86th player in NHL history to reach 1,000. The 29-year-old, who temporarily overtook Edmonton's Connor McDavid in the race for the Art Ross Trophy, hit the milestone in his 757th career game making him the 12th fastest to accomplish the feat. Pittsburgh took a hit on the blue line in the win over the Jets as Justin Schultz and Olli Maatta went down with injuries in the second period, forcing the team to play with only four defensemen.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (36-15-5): Oliver Bjorkstrand made an instant contribution Wednesday in his first game since being recalled from Cleveland of the American Hockey League, scoring his first goal of the season which proved to be the game-winner while earning the praise of his coach. "Through his game, I thought he checked well," John Tortorella told reporters. "Part of the maturation of a young guy is how you play away from the puck. I thought he really showed a concentration there, and you can see his skill." Columbus continues its homestand Sunday against Nashville, then has five days off before concluding it versus the New York Islanders.

OVERTIME

1. Penguins D Kris Letang, who saw more than 31 minutes of ice time in his 600th NHL game Thursday, is three assists shy of 300 for his career.

2. Columbus D David Savard's next point will be his 100th in the NHL.

3. Pittsburgh has gone 6-0-2 since the All-Star break.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Penguins 2

Preview: Colorado at Carolina
When: 7:30 PM ET, Friday, February 17, 2017
Where: PNC Arena, Raleigh, North Carolina

The league-worst Colorado Avalanche attempt to halt a five-game overall losing streak and salvage the finale of their five-game road trip Friday when they visit the well-rested Carolina Hurricanes. Colorado, which has an abysmal minus-77 goal differential, has scored a total of six goals during its slide and was blanked 2-0 in Buffalo on Thursday.

The Avalanche have lost 11 straight on the road but have recorded more victories away from home (eight) than they have at Pepsi Center (seven). Carolina looks to avoid a third straight loss as it returns from a five-day break to begin a five-game homestand. The Hurricanes have been idle since Saturday, when they dropped a 5-2 decision in Dallas despite the continued emergence of Sebastian Aho. The 19-year-old Finnish right wing, who has netted five tallies in as many games, is second on the team — and third among NHL rookies — with 17 goals and tied for second with 32 points.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Altitude (Colorado), FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (15-38-2): Colorado has had difficulty scoring all season, as it has recorded a league-low 109 goals and been shut out nine times during its first 55 games. Defenseman Erik Johnson, who broke his leg Dec. 3, participated in an optional skate Thursday but has yet to take part in a team practice since the injury. Matt Duchene leads the team with 15 goals but is mired in a 12-game drought and has tallied in just one of his last 19 contests.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (24-22-7): Carolina is just one point ahead of last-place Detroit in the Eastern Conference but only trails Toronto by eight for the second wild-card spot. Jeff Skinner, who is aiming for the fifth 20-goal season of his career, leads the team with 18 but has scored just once in his last 11 contests. Defenseman Justin Faulk has notched a point in four of his last five games after scoring in the loss to Dallas.

OVERTIME

1. Hurricanes C Victor Rask is tied with Aho for second on the team with 32 points but has been kept off the scoresheet in 11 straight games, last notching a point with a goal Jan. 13 against Buffalo.

2. Colorado has not won on the road since edging Chicago 2-1 in overtime Dec. 22.

3. Only three of the 10 teams that have completed their bye week were victorious in their first game back.

PREDICTION: Hurricanes 4, Avalanche 1

Preview: Florida at Anaheim
When: 10:00 PM ET, Friday, February 17, 2017
Where: Honda Center, Anaheim, California

The Florida Panthers hoped to be a more attacking, offensive team when Tom Rowe took over as interim coach in late November, replacing Gerard Gallant, and it appears they are beginning to find their way. The Panthers scored 13 goals in the first two contests of a critical road trip that continues with a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Rowe told reporters “We just took advantage of our opportunities” after Wednesday’s 6-5 overtime victory at Pacific Division-leading San Jose in which Florida posted only 22 shots on goal. Aleksander Barkov boasts four goals in the past three games for the Panthers, who have accumulated 24 tallies in the last five contests of their current 5-1-1 surge. Anaheim, which lost 2-1 at Florida on Feb. 3, should be a strong challenge for the Panthers after ending a six-game road trip (2-3-1) with an inspiring 1-0 victory over Western Conference-leading Minnesota on Tuesday. “We knew it was a big game,” Ducks goalie John Gibson, who turned aside 37 shots, told reporters. “It wasn’t the road trip we wanted and we knew if we could end on a good note it would kind of build confidence and salvage the trip.”

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One, FSN Florida, Prime Ticket (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (30-18-10): Anaheim will be without face-off specialist Antoine Vermette for 10 games after he was suspended for abuse of an official in Tuesday’s victory and forward Corey Tropp was recalled to add depth. One of the issues on the road trip for Anaheim was the power play, which converted one of 18 attempts in the first five games before going without an opportunity against Minnesota. Ryan Kesler leads the team with 44 points while fellow forwards captain Ryan Getzlaf (42, three in the last two games) and Corey Perry (40, four in the last three) are closing in.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (25-20-10): Barkov is not the only Florida player lifting his game during the hot streak as leading scorer Vincent Trocheck (39 points) boasts two goals and three assists in the last three games. Fellow forward Jonathan Huberdeau scored the winning goal Wednesday and has been on fire since returning from an Achilles injury that kept him out of the first 51 games, tallying three times and setting up four in four outings. Roberto Luongo was replaced by James Reimer for overtime against San Jose, but Rowe told reporters the veteran goalie was just cramping and should be fine.

OVERTIME

1. Anaheim F Rickard Rakell leads the team with 22 goals, but has only one in the last six contests.

2. Florida RW Jaromir Jagr became the second player in NHL history to reach 1,900 points Wednesday, recording an assist on his 45th birthday, and owns three in three games.

3. Ducks D Sami Vatanen (lower-body) missed the last five games and is considered day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Ducks 3, Panthers 2
