GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (53-87) at Washington Nationals (86-54)
DATE/TIME: Friday, September 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Phillies at Nationals
Gracenote

Max Scherzer is all systems go after pitching a pain-free bullpen session on Wednesday, four days after his left calf was struck by a line drive in a game against Milwaukee. The two-time Cy Young Award winner hopes he's no worse for wear on Friday as the Washington Nationals play the second contest of their four-game series versus the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer carries both an overall 11-start unbeaten streak and a 7-0 mark with a 2.07 ERA against the Phillies since 2015, including a 1-0 record in two encounters this season. Washington trimmed its magic number to four toward clinching its fourth National League East title in six years with Thursday's 4-3 victory over Philadelphia coupled with second-place Miami's 6-5 setback in Atlanta. Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera had a single and double on Thursday to raise his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest such streak in the majors this season. The 25-year-old Venezuelan has enjoyed success versus Scherzer, against whom he is 10-for-31 in his career.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Thompson (1-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (13-5, 2.19)

Thompson put his best foot forward in his return to the rotation, allowing one run on three hits while striking out a career-high seven in six innings of a 3-1 victory versus Miami. “It's nice to have one of those days after the things I've gone through this year. It makes me feel good," the 23-year-old said. Thompson made a pair of relief appearances versus Washington in May, striking out two in a scoreless inning of work before permitting two runs on as many hits with three walks in two frames just two days later.

Scherzer is 5-0 during his 11-start unbeaten streak since his last loss against Miami on June 21, when he pitched well by surrendering just two runs on as many hits and striking out 11 in eight innings. The 33-year-old has allowed five runs and struck out 15 in 12 2/3 innings versus the Phillies this season. Scherzer has routinely flustered Aaron Altherr (0-for-9, six strikeouts), Maikel Franco (1-for-18) and Cameron Rupp (4-for-23, 12 strikeouts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington SS Trea Turner, who had the go-ahead two-run single on Thursday, entered the series going just 3-for-32 with 12 strikeouts versus Philadelphia.

2. Phillies rookie LF Rhys Hoskins is just 5-for-19 after going 24-for-69 in his previous 19 contests.

3. Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy is 6-for-12 with two homers, four RBIs and three runs scored in his last three games.

PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Phillies 2

GAME: Detroit Tigers (59-80) at Toronto Blue Jays (64-76)
DATE/TIME: Friday, September 08 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Tigers at Blue Jays
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers did not expect to be playing a meaningless series against each other in September, but both clubs are slogging through the final month toward the bottom of their respective divisions. The Blue Jays will at least try to bring some excitement to the home fans when they host the Tigers for the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

Toronto (64-76) made the playoffs in each of the last two seasons but sits in last place in the American League East and wasted a chance to play spoiler by dropping two of three to the East-leading Boston Red Sox this week. The Tigers won the AL Central four straight seasons (2011-2014) and finished in second in 2016, but finally started a rebuilding process with a series of trades and are losers of 17 of their last 23 games after getting pounded by the Kansas City Royals 13-2 on Wednesday. That marked the third time in the last six games that the Detroit staff surrendered double-digit runs. The Tigers will try to stop the bleeding behind right-hander Buck Farmer on Friday while the Blue Jays hope righty Marcus Stroman is able to take his turn in the rotation.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Buck Farmer (3-2, 7.18 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (11-6, 3.08)

Farmer does not seem to be a likely candidate to change Detroit’s pitching fortunes after getting knocked around for five runs on three hits and three walks over three innings against Cleveland last Friday. The 26-year-old was ripped for a total of 21 runs across 13 1/3 innings over his last four major-league outings, dating back to June 13. Farmer was pounded for six runs - five earned - and eight hits over four innings in his only career start against Toronto.

Stroman was hit on the elbow by a comebacker at Baltimore on Saturday and left the game in the second inning before undergoing x-rays that came back negative. The 26-year-old is scheduled to undergo more testing on Thursday before a final decision is made on his status for Friday's opener. Stroman held Boston to one earned run in six innings during his last full start on Aug. 28 and did not factor in the decision in his lone previous start against Detroit despite scattering two runs and four hits over nine innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers SS Jose Iglesias is away from the club on paternity leave and could miss the whole series.

2. Toronto DH Kendrys Morales is 3-for-29 in his last six games.

3. Detroit OF Alex Presley hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 8, Tigers 6

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (70-71) at Boston Red Sox (79-61)
DATE/TIME: Friday, September 08 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Rays at Red Sox
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Boston Red Sox bought themselves a little breathing room in the American League East with a pair of wins over the last-place Toronto Blue Jays this week and would like to continue taking advantage of teams with losing records at home. The Red Sox will attempt to do just that when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.

Boston brushed aside any controversy from the rival New York Yankees accusing them of sign stealing by surviving a 19-inning marathon with a win over the Blue Jays and carried that momentum into a 6-1 triumph in the rain during the rubber match on Wednesday, leaving the team 3 1/2 games up in the East heading into the weekend. "It's in our hands," Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. told reporters. "We just have to continue to play good baseball and control what we can control, and not worry about anything else." The Rays (70-71) are trying to stay in the AL wild card race and have a chance to swing the AL East race with 12 more games left against Boston and New York. Tampa Bay will throw its best at the Red Sox on Friday, when right-hander Chris Archer opposes lefty Drew Pomeranz.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (9-8, 3.76 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (14-5, 3.36)

Archer did not record an out at the Chicago White Sox on Saturday and was removed after just eight pitches due to tightness in his forearm. An MRI revealed no structural damage and the North Carolina native came through a throwing session with no issues on Tuesday, allowing Tampa Bay to keep him in his spot in the rotation. Archer, who allowed three or fewer earned runs in six straight and 12 of his last 13 outings, is just 2-11 with a 5.06 ERA in 18 career starts against Boston.

Pomeranz had a string of eight straight starts surrendering three or fewer runs come to an end when he was reached for four runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings while suffering a loss at New York on Saturday. The 28-year-old yielded a pair of home runs in that start, matching his total from the previous six outings. Pomeranz last saw Tampa Bay on July 7, when he earned a win by scattering two runs over six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox LHP David Price (elbow) is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Saturday.

2. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria is 6-for-12 over the last three games, matching his hit total from the previous nine contests.

3. Boston rookie LF Andrew Benintendi is 0-for-18 over the last four games.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 3, Rays 2

The Cleveland Indians will take their franchise-record 15-game winning streak back home when they begin a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. The Indians had no problem extending their remarkable run - eclipsing their 14-game streak from a year ago - as they coasted past the Chicago White Sox by an 11-2 margin on Thursday.

The victory capped an 11-0 road trip, baseball's longest undefeated trek since 1957, and gave Cleveland the longest winning streak in the majors since a 20-gamer by Oakland in 2002. Edwin Encarnacion slugged his 33rd homer and Francisco Lindor went deep for the 27th time as the Indians maintained an 11-game lead in the American League Central. The Orioles have exchanged wins and losses over their last eight games, with Thursday's 9-1 setback against the New York Yankees leaving them with a two-game deficit in the race for the second AL wild-card spot. They give the ball to the veteran Wade Miley on Friday opposite Mike Clevinger, who has spun six scoreless innings in consecutive starts for the Indians.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles LH Wade Miley (8-11, 4.91 ERA) vs. Indians RH Mike Clevinger (8-5, 3.50)

Miley has allowed three runs or fewer in seven straight starts after giving up two runs over six frames in a tough loss to Toronto on Saturday. The 30-year-old has yielded 32 hits in 38 2/3 innings during the improved seven-start stretch. Encarnacion is 6-for-13 with two homers and two doubles against Miley, who gave up four runs in five frames of a loss to Cleveland on June 22.

Clevinger is 8-4 with a 3.18 ERA as a starter this year while registering 107 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings. His second consecutive scoreless outing was at Detroit last Friday, when the 26-year-old yielded three hits and struck out six. He got the win opposite Miley earlier in the year but has surrendered six runs and 10 hits with seven walks in nine career innings against the Orioles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians 3B Jose Ramirez (wrist) was out of the lineup Thursday and 3B Yandy Diaz left the contest after being hit with a pitch on his left elbow.

2. Encarnacion is batting .433 with three homers and nine RBIs during his eight-game hitting streak.

3. Baltimore is expected to activate SS J.J. Hardy (wrist) from the 10-day disabled list.

PREDICTION: Indians 7, Orioles 4

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (61-80) at New York Mets (61-79)

Brandon Nimmo showed some uncharacteristic power by recording his first career multi-homer performance to highlight his second three-hit effort in four outings as the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of their four-game series. The 24-year-old aims to continue his strong surge on Friday when the clubs reconvene at Citi Field.

Nimmo has hit safely in all four encounters this season with Cincinnati, going 6-for-16 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Mets, who have won 16 of the last 18 meetings between the teams. Juan Lagares belted a solo shot in Thursday's 7-2 rout to extend his hitting streak to eight games, during which he has four doubles, one triple and one homer. While the Mets have won three of four, the Reds have dropped four of their last five on the road to fall to 25-44 away from Great American Ball Park. Scott Schebler had a pair of doubles on Thursday to improve to 5-for-14 with four runs scored versus New York this season.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Amir Garrett (3-6, 7.41 ERA) vs. Mets RH Seth Lugo (5-4, 5.00)

Garrett, who played college basketball at nearby St. John's, will return to the mound for Cincinnati for the first time since June 20. The 25-year-old struggled a bit during his time with Triple-A Louisville before turning in a gem, allowing one hit and striking out 10 over seven scoreless innings in his last outing. "They don't really remember what you did at the beginning of the year,” Garrett told Cincinnati.com. "If you're there at the end, it's a better opportunity for you."

Lugo has seen a few positives despite permitting six earned runs in 8 2/3 innings over two starts since returning from the disabled list. "Felt like all game I was making pitches on both sides of the plate," said the 27-year-old Lugo, who allowed four runs on eight hits in a 4-1 setback at Houston. "Wasn't leaving many pitches over the middle. Executing pitches down and keeping them off balance." Lugo has kept the ball in the park in each of his last three outings after surrendering two homers in each of his previous three trips to the mound.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati SS Zack Cozart is 5-for-12 with one homer, three RBIs and three runs scored during his last three games.

2. New York SS Jose Reyes, who had a two-run single on Thursday, has 15 hits and 13 runs scored since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 25.

3. Reds 1B Joey Votto has hit safely in five straight and nine of his last 10 games.

GAME: Miami Marlins (67-73) at Atlanta Braves (62-77)

Preview: Marlins at Braves
Gracenote
Sep 8, 2017

Ozzie Albies is experiencing the major leagues for the first time and entered the second contest of the Atlanta Braves' four-game home series against the Miami Marlins after a wild swing of emotions. The 20-year-old second baseman made a critical error in the eighth inning of Thursday’s 6-5 victory that led to Miami evening the game, but he doubled in the tying run as Atlanta rallied in the bottom of the ninth.

Albies, one of baseball’s top prospects who figures to help anchor Atlanta’s infield moving forward, extended his hitting streak to six games in the ninth with a double into the gap in right-center field and finished with two RBIs. The Marlins fell for the 10th time in 11 games, scoring only 28 runs during that stretch, but showed some life offensively by plating three runs in the top of the first inning in the series opener and getting a pinch-hit single from Ichiro Suzuki to take a late lead. Suzuki’s 95th plate appearance as a pinch-hitter gave the 43-year-old the major-league record for most pinch-hit plate appearances in a single season. Dee Gordon extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two hits for Miami on Thursday and is one stolen base shy of reaching 50 for the third time in his career.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jose Urena (12-6, 3.71 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (10-11, 4.75)

Urena has emerged as a key part of Miami’s rotation, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 14 of his last 17 starts. The 25-year-old gave up one run and six hits in seven innings of a no-decision Sunday against Philadelphia after going 3-1 with a 3.91 ERA in five turns last month. Urena is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts versus the Braves this season, holding Atlanta hitters to a .197 batting average overall and a .150 mark at SunTrust Park.

Foltynewicz looks to snap his five-start losing streak, but the 25-year-old has pitched far better in his last two outings. He gave up two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs last Friday and yielded one and four versus Colorado just five days earlier after posting a 15.43 ERA in his previous three starts. Foltynewicz registered a season-high 11 strikeouts against Miami on Aug. 5 and is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA in four games (three starts) versus the Marlins in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte collected two more hits Thursday to raise his season total to 182 as he attempts to become the first Brave to record 200 in a season since Marquis Grissom finished with 207 in 1996.

2. Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton has slugged 42 of his 53 homers while batting second, the second-most from that lineup spot in major-league history (Eddie Matthews, Milwaukee Braves, 46 in 1959).

3. Braves SS Dansby Swanson went 2-for-4 on Thursday and has raised his season average from .208 to .240 over his last 26 games.

GAME: New York Yankees (75-64) at Texas Rangers (70-69)

WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas

Preview: Yankees at Rangers

Sep 7, 2017

Masahiro Tanaka finally is showing the consistency the New York Yankees need for the stretch run and will look to win his fourth straight start Friday night in the opener of a three-game set at the Texas Rangers on Friday night. The Yankees are 3 1/2 games behind first-place Boston in the American League East after winning two of three in Baltimore.

New York slugger Aaron Judge has cooled off considerably since his dazzling power show in the first half of the season, but he clubbed his 39th homer in Thursday's 9-1 win to move back into a tie for the AL lead. New York swatted four homers to end a streak of 11 straight series losses in Baltimore and has won five of seven games since it was swept at home by Cleveland to maintain its grip on the top wild card. Shortstop Elvis Andrus has homered four times in four games for Texas - which will enter the series either 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 games out of the second wild card - to join Mike Trout and Jose Altuve as the only players with 20 homers and 20 stolen bases this year. "It's great company, the two best players in the league right now," Andrus told reporters. "I'm really proud of the season I'm having right now, but it's not about me."

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (11-10, 4.54 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (11-10, 4.87)

Tanaka went seven innings for the third straight start on Saturday, holding bitter rival Boston to one run and five hits. He also permitted one run while striking out 10 in his previous outing against Seattle and has allowed a combined five runs during his three-start winning streak. Tanaka is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Rangers, but blanked them for eight innings on June 23.

Perez fell to 5-10 after losing his fourth straight start at Minnesota on Aug. 4, but he has turned things around by ripping off six straight wins in as many starts. He has not been overpowering, yielding 31 hits across 26 innings over his last four turns. Perez allowed eight runs in one-plus inning versus the Yankees in 2015, but beat them with six innings of two-run ball last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Judge is No. 2 on the all-time list for homers by a rookie, behind only Mark McGwire (49).

2. Rangers C Robinson Chirinos has reached base in 22 consecutive games.

3. Yankees C Gary Sanchez, who hit 12 homers in August, returns from a three-game suspension Friday.

PREDICTION: Yankees 6, Rangers 3

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (72-68) at Chicago Cubs (77-63)

Preview: Brewers at Cubs
Gracenote
Sep 8, 2017

The race for the National League Central takes center stage Friday as the Chicago Cubs begin a critical three-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, who stumble into the weekend after losing three straight games in Cincinnati. Chicago has won eight of its last 11 contests and leads the division by five games over the Brewers and St. Louis.

Ian Happ had three hits and Albert Almora Jr. delivered a two-run homer in Thursday’s 8-2 win over Pittsburgh as the Cubs battled through a 52-minute rain delay and improved to 34-18 since the All-Star break. Third baseman Kris Bryant, who leads the Cubs with 95 runs scored, doubled in five at-bats Thursday and has reached base safely in 32 consecutive starts. First baseman Eric Thames is batting .143 over his last 49 at-bats for Milwaukee, which is three games behind Colorado for the second wild card in the NL. “Obviously, this is a big weekend,” Brewers catcher Stephen Vogt told reporters. “It’s a chance for us to make a move in the division and gain some momentum into the last couple of weeks. It’s huge.”

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (11-6, 3.59 ERA) vs. Cubs RH John Lackey (11-10, 4.74)

Nelson recorded his second straight victory last Friday with 11 strikeouts over seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Washington. The 28-year-old retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced and tied his career high in strikeouts while registering his 17th quality start of the season. Bryant is 5-for-25 with six strikeouts against Nelson, who is 1-6 with a 4.08 ERA in 14 career games (12 starts) against Chicago, including a 6.35 ERA in two outings this season.

After struggling in his previous two starts, Lackey turned in one of his best outings of the season last Friday against Atlanta, allowing three hits over seven shutout innings. The 38-year-old native of Texas has pitched well at Wrigley Field since the beginning of July, going 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA in his last five home starts. Thames has gone 5-for-11 with one home run against Lackey, who owns a 6-3 record and 3.45 ERA in 13 career starts against Milwaukee.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers LF Ryan Braun is one home run away from 300 for his career.

2. The Cubs are 9-1 in Lackey’s last 10 starts.

3. Milwaukee’s 3.61 runs per game since the All-Star break ranks last in the majors.

PREDICTION: Brewers 6, Cubs 4

Two of the three worst teams in baseball square off on Friday, when the San Francisco Giants visit the Chicago White Sox for the opener of their three-game series. San Francisco has dropped 10 of its last 13 games and is saddled with a .387 winning percentage in an unforeseen poor campaign, while Chicago is just a tick better at .388.

The Giants have won three World Series titles this decade and lost to the eventual champion Chicago Cubs in last year's postseason before experiencing a dreadful campaign. "I don't think anybody saw this coming," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "Really, there is no logic to it. ... You depend on your guys having their normal years, maybe get a surprise or two. We haven't had that, to be honest." The White Sox have dropped eight of their last 10 contests and already have sewn up their fifth consecutive losing season. Chicago was outscored 30-10 while suffering a four-game home sweep at the hands of Cleveland and recorded just three hits in Thursday's 11-2 setback.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Matt Moore (4-13, 5.42 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.25)

Moore is suffering through a season in which he has set a career high for defeats while being one of the worst starting pitchers in the majors. The 28-year-old has allowed five or more earned runs on eight occasions this season and has served up a career-high 24 homers. Moore is 4-1 with 1.45 ERA in five career starts against the White Sox, including a 2-0 record and 0.79 ERA in two turns at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Giolito has been superb while winning his last two outings, giving up one run and six hits over 14 innings while defeating Tampa Bay and Detroit. The 23-year-old struck out a career-best 10 while dominating the Rays in his last turn after fanning just four in each of his first two starts for the White Sox. Giolito was just 6-10 with a 4.48 ERA in 24 starts for Triple-A Charlotte before fitting nicely into Chicago's rotation.

WALK-OFFS

1. The White Sox, who are just 4-13 in interleague play this season, are 7-3 all-time versus the Giants.

2. San Francisco 2B Joe Panik went 12-for-15 in a series against Colorado to match the record for most hits in a three-game set.

3. Chicago LHP Carlos Rodon (shoulder) was scratched from Thursday's start due to stiffness.

PREDICTION: Giants 5, White Sox 4

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (67-74) at St. Louis Cardinals (72-68)

Preview: Pirates at Cardinals
Gracenote
Sep 8, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals experienced a disappointing end to their 10-game road trip but look to keep their momentum going when they open a three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. St. Louis was blanked 3-0 by San Diego on Thursday to halt its four-game winning streak and conclude a 7-3 road trip.

The Cardinals recorded 11 hits in Thursday's setback but never stepped on home plate while falling five games behind the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs and three in back of Colorado for the second wild-card spot. Matt Carpenter (shoulder) is expected back Friday after a three-game absence, but Kolten Wong (back) likely will miss his fifth straight contest. Pittsburgh lost the final two contests of its four-game series against the Cubs and needs to win 15 of its final 22 games to avoid a second straight losing season. Pirates rookie Josh Bell is hitless in nine at-bats over his last three games but leads the club in both homers (24) and RBIs (83).

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Trevor Williams (6-7, 4.14 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (4-1, 2.50)

Williams lost three consecutive decisions before ending his skid by pitching seven scoreless innings against Cincinnati in his last turn. The 25-year-old is 4-5 with a 4.74 ERA in 13 road appearances (10 starts). Williams is 0-1 with a 9.35 ERA in two starts against the Cardinals this year and 1-1 with an 8.31 ERA in five career appearances (two starts).

Weaver has won three consecutive starts, allowing just four runs during that stretch. The 24-year-old has registered 29 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings during the span, twice striking out 10 and also fanning nine against San Francisco in his most recent start. Weaver has posted a 3.00 ERA in two career appearances (one start) versus the Pirates and has yet to retire Chris Stewart (3-for-3).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cardinals hold a 7-6 edge over the Pirates in the season series.

2. St. Louis C Yadier Molina is just 2-for-17 over his last five games.

3. Pittsburgh is expected to activate OF Gregory Polanco (left hamstring) and OF/2B Adam Frazier (right hamstring) before Friday's contest.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Pirates 3

GAME: Minnesota Twins (73-67) at Kansas City Royals (69-70)

Preview: Twins at Royals
Gracenote
Sep 8, 2017

Minnesota Twins veteran Joe Mauer answered seeing his 14-game hitting streak come to a halt by picking up where he left off, much to the chagrin of the Kansas City Royals. The 34-year-old looks to ride the momentum of his three-hit performance in the opener when the Twins face the Royals in the second contest of their four-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Mauer, who had two singles and a double in Thursday's 4-2 win, has reached base in 16 straight games as the Twins bolstered their lead to one full game over the Los Angeles Angels for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Mauer is 10-for-16 versus the Royals in his last four meetings, but is just 4-for-22 in his career versus Friday starter Ian Kennedy. Lorenzo Cain is 9-for-17 during his five-game hitting streak and is 6-for-20 against Friday starter Ervin Santana. Whit Merrifield also carries a five-game hitting streak for the Royals, who reside 3 1/2 games in back of the Twins.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Ervin Santana (14-7, 3.35 ERA) vs. Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-10, 5.37)

Santana will look for a better showing against Kansas City than the one he put forth in his last outing, as he allowed four runs on eight hits in a no-decision on Sunday. The 34-year-old Dominican has worked at least six innings in seven of his last eight outings, with a 3-0 mark to show for it. Santana owns a 1-1 mark in three outings versus the Royals this season, although he has yielded 12 runs on 18 hits - including four homers - in 19 innings.

Kennedy put a disastrous August (0-4, 9.57 ERA) behind him by allowing two earned runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision versus Minnesota. The 32-year-old owns an 0-2 mark in four encounters against the Twins this season despite limiting the club to a .194 batting average. Eduardo Escobar is batting a robust 8-for-19 against Kennedy, although the right-hander has kept Jorge Polanco (0-for-7) and Brian Dozier (5-for-24) under wraps.

WALK-OFFS

1. Polanco has recorded multi-hit performances in back-to-back games and four times over his last seven.

2. Royals 1B Eric Hosmer had two hits in the series opener and is 21-for-59 versus the Twins this season.

3. Dozier is 2-for-20 in his last five games, although the two hits were homers.

PREDICTION: Royals 5, Twins 3

Preview: Padres at Diamondbacks

Sep 8, 2017

Patrick Corbin looks to win his sixth consecutive start and help his team extend its franchise-best winning streak to 14 games when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the San Diego Padres on Friday in the opener of their three-game series. Corbin has posted a microscopic 0.50 ERA while giving up just 20 hits over 35 2/3 innings during the best stretch of his career.

The Diamondbacks are hoping to have All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (elbow) back in the lineup after he missed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arizona has swept the major league-best Dodgers twice during their winning streak, outscoring Los Angeles 40-13 in the six victories. San Diego salvaged the finale of a four-game set with St. Louis thanks to a 3-0 victory on Thursday. Wil Myers contributed a two-run blast, his 25th of the season, and is three shy of matching his career high set last season.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jordan Lyles (0-2, 6.71 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LHP Patrick Corbin (13-11, 3.83)

Lyles did not factor in the decision in his first start for San Diego as he gave up two runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old made 33 relief appearances while with Colorado earlier this season but was released and signed with the Padres in August. Lyles is 1-6 with a 7.26 ERA in 16 career appearances (eight starts) against Arizona while struggling with Goldschmidt (9-for-19, one homer) and Gregor Blanco (7-for-13, one homer).

Corbin has struck out 33 batters and gone unscored upon three times during his torrid stretch. The 28-year-old, who is looking to match the career-best victory total he set in 2013, is 7-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break. Corbin is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three 2017 starts against the Padres and 5-5 with a 3.49 ERA in 14 career appearances (nine starts) despite struggling with Hector Sanchez (7-for-13, seven RBIs) and Myers (7-for-14, one homer).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks are 9-4 against the Padres this season and scored 32 runs in a three-game sweep the last time San Diego visited Arizona.

2. San Diego C Austin Hedges was hitless in nine at-bats in the St. Louis series and is 1-for-19 over his last six games.

3. Arizona RF J.D. Martinez is 1-for-9 in two games since becoming the 18th player in major-league history to hit four homers in a contest.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 6, Padres 2
