Their roster fortified by a blockbuster move at the waiver deadline, the Houston Astros go for their eighth consecutive victory when they open a four-game series at the Oakland Athletics on Friday night. Houston is attempting to hold off red-hot Cleveland for the American League's best record as they continue a 10-game road trip.

Former Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander was the big-ticket item brought in by the Astros on Aug. 31, but Cameron Maybin - a waiver-wire pickup - has supplied an unexpected jolt with late tiebreaking homers in each of the last two games. "We knew everybody would like him," said Houston manager A.J. Hinch of Maybin. "He's obviously performing at a high level, earning more at-bats." While the Astros were cutting their magic number to win the AL West to nine games, last-place Oakland halted an eight-game skid with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Khris Davis went deep in back-to-back games and is tied with Aaron Judge for the AL lead with 39 homers.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Collin McHugh (2-2, 3.25 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Jharel Cotton (7-10, 5.53)

McHugh was denied a chance at winning his third straight start last time out when he was pulled after 4 2/3 innings despite yielding one run on four hits against Texas. Still, he has allowed one earned run over his last three turns and limited opponents to two runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts. That includes six scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over Oakland on Aug. 19.

Cotton escaped with a no-decision at Seattle on Saturday, lasting only four innings and giving up four runs on seven hits, including three homers. He beat the Astros on Aug. 20 by tossing 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball, but has surrendered at least four runs in six of his last eight starts. Keeping the ball in the park is a major issue for Cotton, who has yielded 24 homers in 114 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros OF Josh Reddick has 15 RBIs in his last 14 games, collecting multiple hits eight times in that span.

2. Davis is 7-for-13 with two homers and seven RBIs in the past three games.

3. Astros OF George Springer has five of his 31 homers in 58 at-bats versus Oakland.

PREDICTION: Astros 6, Athletics 4

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (72-68) at Seattle Mariners (69-71)

Preview: Angels at Mariners
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

Recent acquisition Mike Leake provided a huge boost to an injury-depleted pitching staff in his debut with Seattle and the Mariners will be hoping for a repeat performance when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night in the opener of a three-game set. Seattle has lost three straight and eight of 11 to fall back in the wild-card chase.

The Mariners' slide continued when they were swept at home in a three-game set by Houston, dropping them to the back of the pack among the eight teams pursuing the two American League wild cards. Kyle Seager has homered in three consecutive games for Seattle, which also was swept at home in a four-game set against the Angels last month. Los Angeles, which is one game behind Minnesota for the second wild card, split the first six contests of its current nine-game road trip after taking two of three in Oakland. Designated hitter Albert Pujols, who has 14 RBIs during a six-game hitting streak, flew back to Los Angeles for treatment on his sore left knee but is expected to be in the lineup for the series opener.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (6-12, 5.08 ERA) vs. vs. Mariners RH Mike Leake (8-12, 4.14)

Despite his double-digit losses, Nolasco is unbeaten over his last seven starts after picking up his third straight no-decision last time out, giving up three runs in 5 2/3 innings at Texas. He will be making his fifth start of the season against the Mariners after posting a 1-0 mark and 4.07 ERA in the first four. Nelson Cruz has been a nightmarish matchup for Nolasco, going 11-for-25 with four homers.

Leake, imported from St. Louis in a trade, ended a winless drought dating to July 24 when he limited Oakland to two runs over seven innings while striking out season high-tying seven. Owner of a 1.91 ERA through his first nine starts, he was tagged for 23 runs and 34 hits in his last four turns with the Cardinals. Andrelton Simmons is 7-for-16 and Justin Upton 7-for-17 against Leake.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels CF Mike Trout has walked in 14 consecutive games, setting a franchise record.

2. Mariners RF Mitch Haniger is 13-for-29 over his past seven games.

3. Angels 1B C.J. Cron has four homers and 15 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Angels 5, Mariners 4

Preview: Rockies at Dodgers
Gracenote
Sep 8, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers turned to Clayton Kershaw in their series opener against the visiting Colorado Rockies, but even their ace was unable to halt their slide. Los Angeles attempts to end its seven-game losing streak on Friday as it hosts Colorado for the second contest of the four-game set.

The major league-best Dodgers were trounced 9-1 on Thursday as Kershaw was tagged for four runs over 3 2/3 innings en route to his first loss since May 1. Los Angeles hasn't gotten in the win column since last Friday and has seen its lead in the National League West shrink to 10 games. Colorado pounded out 16 hits in the series-opening victory as it increased its lead over Milwaukee and St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot to three games. Six of the team's first eight batters in the lineup recorded multi-hit performances while DJ LeMahieu went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (10-6, 4.26 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Yu Darvish (8-11, 4.09)

Marquez is coming off a loss to Arizona on Sunday in which he gave up four runs and six hits over six innings. The 22-year-old Venezuelan had control of his pitches, however, as he did not issue a walk for the first time in seven outings. Marquez, who has yet to face Los Angeles in his brief career, is 0-1 in his last three road starts.

Darvish has struggled since beginning his tenure with the Dodgers with two strong starts, going 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA over his last three turns. The 31-year-old from Japan was tagged for five runs on eight hits and three walks over only three innings in a loss at San Diego on Saturday. Darvish, who never has faced Colorado, is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in two starts at Dodger Stadium.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers SS Corey Seager (elbow) is expected to make his first start since Aug. 27 on Friday.

2. Colorado activated C Ryan Hanigan (groin) from the 10-day disabled list, recalled OF Raimel Tapia from Triple-A Albuquerque and acquired RHP Jon Keller from Baltimore as the player to be named in the deal involving Miguel Castro on April 7.

3. Los Angeles 1B Adrian Gonzalez received an epidural for his back pain for the second time in three months and is expected to miss the remainder of the series.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 6, Rockies 3
