GAME: Boston Red Sox (77-58) at New York Yankees (71-63)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Red Sox at Yankees
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

The New York Yankees are running out of chances to make it a race in the American League East and will try to avoid falling further behind the Boston Red Sox when the teams continue a four-game series Saturday in the Bronx. The Yankees had a chance to get within 3 1/2 games with a win in Friday's meeting, but managed four hits in a 4-1 loss to fall 5 1/2 back.

Andrew Benintendi homered to continue his assault on Yankee Stadium, where he is batting .393 with five home runs in eight games this year. Eduardo Nunez also homered for the Red Sox, his eighth blast in 31 games since being traded to Boston. The Sox, who are within four games of Houston for the best record in the AL, have won five of the last seven meetings with their rivals and are 8-9 in the season series with two to play. Lefty Drew Pomeranz gets the nod Saturday for Boston opposite Masahiro Tanaka for the Yankees, who remain one game ahead of Minnesota for the first wild card spot in the AL.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (14-4, 3.23 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (10-10, 4.69)

Pomeranz has allowed three runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 starts - the one outlier being a six-inning, four-run outing against the Yankees on July 14. He allowed three runs while working around seven hits and five walks in six frames at Toronto on Monday to improve to 8-0 over a span of 12 starts. The 6-6, 240-pounder is 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA in four starts against the Yankees this year but has had issues in his career with Didi Gregorius (8-for-19, one home run), Gary Sanchez (6-for-15, three home runs) and Brett Gardner (8-for-23, one home run).

A recent trip to the disabled list seems to be just what Tanaka needed, as the 28-year-old has allowed four runs over 14 innings with 14 strikeouts in two starts since being activated. The Japan native gave up three runs across 16 2/3 innings over two appearances at Fenway Park this year, but he was reached for five runs and five hits (three home runs) in five frames in a matchup with Boston at Yankee Stadium on June 6. Tanaka is 1-6 with a 9.62 ERA in eight day games.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee) was activated from the disabled list on Friday but is expected to rest Saturday.

2. Yankees RF Aaron Judge recorded his first RBI in eight games with a double Friday night, but the AL's home run leader (37) has not gone deep since Aug. 16.

3. Boston has won 11 of its last 15 games on the road.

PREDICTION: Yankees 5, Red Sox 4

GAME: New York Mets (58-75) at Houston Astros (80-53)

WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Mets at Astros (Game 1)
Gracenote
Sep 1, 2017

The Astros could be forgiven if their undivided attention wasn't on baseball this week, playing a three-game "home" series in St. Petersburg, Fla., while flooding devastated the city of Houston. The American League West leaders hope to provide a "welcome distraction" - in the words of team president Reid Ryan - for their fans as much as anything when they return to Minute Maid Park on Saturday for a split doubleheader against the New York Mets.

After losing its first two games in Florida by a combined score of 20-3 to Texas, Houston avoided a sweep with Thursday's 5-1 victory before the front office gave the team a much-needed jolt by dealing for six-time All-Star right-hander Justin Verlander from Detroit minutes before the waiver trade deadline. "I think he'll add a dimension we don't have. He's pitched well his whole career and has been pitching well lately. I think he'll add a dimension in the playoffs, hopefully, when we get there," team owner Jim Crane told MLB.com. The Astros also landed outfielder Cameron Maybin off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the evening, providing the team with some reinforcements as they attempt to maintain their 12-game division lead. The Mets, who will spend Friday helping the recovery efforts in Houston, went 10-20 in August after suffering their third loss in four games Thursday at Cincinnati.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Matt Harvey (4-3, 5.25 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (10-6, 3.88)

Harvey is expected to come off the disabled list Saturday after missing more than two months with a stress reaction in his shoulder, although he was less than impressive during his four-start rehab stint. The 2013 All-Star did not factor into the decision in any of his four minor-league turns and posted a 5.87 ERA in two outings with Double-A Binghamton. Harvey has never faced Houston, but he has been mostly dominant in 11 career interleague starts, going 4-3 with a 1.64 ERA.

After going 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA in July, Morton finished with a 1-2 record and 4.20 ERA in five August starts, including five innings of three-run ball in a no-decision Sunday at the Angels. The 33-year-old New Jersey native has done his best work at home, going 7-3 with a 3.65 ERA (versus 3-3, 4.35 on the road). Morton has not enjoyed much success against the Mets, however, losing each of his three decisions over eight appearances (seven starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros traded three of their top 11 prospects - RHP Franklin Perez, OF Daz Cameron and C Jake Rogers - to acquire Verlander.

2. New York entered Friday tied for the National League lead with 193 homers but failed to hit one in three games against the Reds, who have surrendered a major-league high 215.

3. Houston placed C/DH Evan Gattis on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with right wrist soreness and designated RHP Dayan Diaz for assignment to clear room for Maybin.

PREDICTION: Astros 5, Mets 4

GAME: Atlanta Braves (59-74) at Chicago Cubs (74-60)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Braves at Cubs
Gracenote
Sep 1, 2017

The Chicago Cubs paced the majors in ERA during their world championship season in 2016, and that same kind of pitching is helping the National League Central leaders begin to pull away from the pack in the division. The Cubs aim to match their season-high winning streak of six games Saturday when they host the third of four contests with the Atlanta Braves.

John Lackey and three relievers tossed a four-hit shutout Friday to help Chicago remain undefeated with two games left on its seven-game homestand - a stretch during which it has outscored the opposition 35-7 and given up no more than three runs in any contest. "If we continue to pitch this well, we can fill it in on the field. The starting pitching is trending in the right direction at the right time," manager Joe Maddon said of the Cubs, who have recorded a staff ERA of 3.67 since the All-Star break after posting a 3.15 mark last season. Chicago remained 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central following Friday's triumph while Atlanta lost for the 16th time in its last 24 outings. After battling the reigning World Series champions to a draw in six contests last year, the Braves have been outscored 25-8 while dropping all five meetings in 2017.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Lucas Sims (2-4, 4.41 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (8-7, 4.37)

Sims recorded the longest outing of his six-start career in a loss at Philadelphia on Monday, yielding four runs on eight hits and striking out seven across 6 1/3 innings. The performance was a slight step back for the 23-year-old, who notched back-to-back wins against Seattle and Colorado while giving up a total of two runs in 11 frames over his previous two outings. Sims will try to improve on his 1-2 record and 5.40 ERA in three road starts as he faces the Cubs for the first time.

Lester is slated to make his first start after a two-week stint on the disabled list with left shoulder fatigue following a 1 2/3-inning outing against Cincinnati on Aug. 17 in which he was roughed up for nine runs (seven earned). The four-time All-Star escaped with a no-decision in that outing but is winless over his last four turns and has already yielded 20 homers - one shy of his total from 2016. Lester dominated the Braves to a win at Atlanta on July 17, allowing one run on three hits across seven innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is three RBIs shy of becoming the fourth player in franchise history to amass three seasons with 30 doubles, 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

2. After posting the second-best record in the NL from June 1-July 16 (23-16), the Braves are a NL-worst 14-29 since.

3. Chicago has won eight in a row at home, matching its best such run of the season.

PREDICTION: Cubs 4, Braves 2

The Los Angeles Dodgers have ended their season-worst slide and look to add two wins to their major league-best total when they visit the San Diego Padres for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Dodgers halted their five-game losing streak with a 1-0 triumph on Friday in the opener of the four-game series to improve their stellar record to 92-41.

Clayton Kershaw (back) allowed two hits in six innings in his first appearance since July 23 as Los Angeles' pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Chris Taylor is filling in at shortstop for Corey Seager, who is limited to pinch-hitting duties due to an elbow injury, and notched two hits as he is 6-for-17 during his four-game hitting streak. Wil Myers struck out twice in three hitless at-bats for San Diego as his home-run drought reached 18 games. Austin Hedges also is struggling through a 3-for-22 funk over his last seven contests.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Brock Stewart (0-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (6-13, 4.96)

Stewart is making his fourth start of the season and the ninth of his career. The 25-year-old didn't fare well in his last outing and was fortunate to walk away with a no-decision as Pittsburgh reached him for five runs and four hits in two-plus innings. Stewart worked two hitless frames of relief against the Padres on July 1 and has given up one hit in three career innings versus San Diego.

Richard lost to Miami in his last turn as he allowed five runs and eight hits over seven innings. The 33-year-old is just 1-5 over his last 12 starts, including a three-game stretch during which he yielded 37 hits. Richard is 7-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 23 career appearances (21 starts) against the Dodgers, is 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in four outings this year and has struggled against former San Diego teammate Adrian Gonzalez (11-for-20).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers are 10-3 against the Padres this season, including a 5-1 record at Petco Park.

2. Prized OF prospect Alex Verdugo was recalled by Los Angeles, and the 21-year-old went 0-for-3 in his major-league debut.

3. San Diego fired hitting coach Alan Zinter, who was nearing completion of his second season on the job.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 6, Padres 5

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (68-66) at San Francisco Giants (53-84)

Preview: Cardinals at Giants
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

After a sluggish first half, Brandon Crawford is reminding everyone why the San Francisco Giants considered the dynamic shortstop untouchable at the July 31 trade deadline. Crawford is hitting .411 with 13 extra-base hits over his last 16 games for the cellar-dwelling Giants, who continue their four-game series against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.

Crawford went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer on Friday, but it wasn’t enough to slow down St. Louis, which rolled to an 11-6 victory and sits six games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and four back of Colorado for the second wild-card spot. The Giants have dropped 10 of their last 13 games and will shut down reliever Mark Melancon soon so the closer can undergo elbow surgery and begin to get ready for spring training. St. Louis has won three of its last four and hopes to have Tommy Pham back in the lineup after he missed Friday’s game with a swollen thumb. Randal Grichuk has homered in three straight games for the Cardinals, who have seven players with at least 15 blasts.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FS1, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (10-6, 3.14 ERA) vs. Giants LH Chris Stratton (2-3, 3.82)

Lynn has gone four straight starts without recording a decision after allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings against Tampa Bay on Sunday. The 27-year-old has been remarkably consistent in his last 11 starts, going 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA since July 1. Buster Posey is 4-for-8 with a home run against Lynn, who is facing San Francisco for the first time since 2015 and owns a 1-4 record and 4.76 ERA in five career starts against the Giants.

Stratton saw his two-game winning streak come to an end Sunday against Arizona despite allowing two runs with 10 strikeouts and five walks over six frames in an 11-0 loss. The 27-year-old has bolstered his case for a spot in the rotation next season by going 2-1 with a 0.96 ERA and 21 strikeouts over his last three starts. Stratton, who is facing the Cardinals for the first time, has issued at least four walks in three of his five starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco LF Jarrett Parker exited Friday’s game with left side tightness and will have an MRI on Saturday.

2. St. Louis recalled RHP Jack Flaherty, RHP Sandy Alcantara, OF Harrison Bader, INF Alex Mejia and C Alberto Rosario from Triple-A Memphis.

3. The Giants recalled LHP Steven Okert, UTIL Orlando Calixte and RHP Derek Law from Triple-A Sacramento and purchased the contract of C Tim Federowicz from the River Cats.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 7, Giants 3

GAME: Cleveland Indians (78-56) at Detroit Tigers (58-76)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 6:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Indians at Tigers
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

The Detroit Tigers threw up the white flag on the season and went into rebuilding mode with a pair of big trades late Thursday, and the Cleveland Indians immediately started taking advantage. The Indians will try to push their winning streak to 10 straight and increase their lead in the American League Central out further when they visit the Tigers in the third of a four-game series on Saturday.

Detroit sent ace Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros in exchange for three prospects and moved its leader in batting average (.279), home runs (28) and RBIs (94) - Justin Upton - to the Los Angeles Angels in a pair of deals in front of the Aug. 31 waiver deadline on Thursday, and general manager Al Avila was blunt in his reasoning. "This is an obvious rebuild move," Avila told reporters on Friday. "We're trying to stock our farm system with the best prospects we can acquire, and that's how we'll move forward. Once we've finished this, at some point there will be a turnaround. We're going to have a rough month of September, and next year may not be all that pretty, either. But at some point in the near future, we expect this to turn around, that some of these prospects will be coming up and making a difference. And within a reasonable time then, we should be ready to go." Cleveland is ready to win now and swept a doubleheader from Detroit to open the series on Friday. The Indians' staff, which is allowing an average of 1.7 runs during the nine-game winning streak, will send ace Corey Kluber to the mound on Saturday opposite Tigers righty Jordan Zimmermann.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (13-4, 2.63 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-11, 6.08)

Kluber is the only real contender to Boston's Chris Sale in the AL Cy Young Award race and he bounced back from a rare loss by holding the New York Yankees to two runs and three hits in eight innings on Monday. The Stetson product surrendered two or fewer runs in 12 of his last 15 starts and leads the AL in ERA while sitting third in strikeouts (215). Some of Kluber's toughest starts this season came versus Detroit, against which he is 1-1 with a 7.53 ERA in three starts.

Zimmermann snapped a four-start winless at Colorado on Monday by yielding nine hits in five innings but limiting the damage to three runs. The Wisconsin native failed to complete six innings in any of his last four turns and owns an 11.57 ERA in that span. Zimmermann was ripped for a combined nine runs and 13 hits over 8 2/3 innings in back-to-back starts against Cleveland to begin July.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians OF Lonnie Chisenhall (strained calf) came off the DL on Friday and went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the doubleheader.

2. Detroit RHP Michael Fulmer (ulnar neuritis) will meet with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his elbow and will miss at least his next two starts.

3. Cleveland DH Edwin Encarnacion is 5-for-10 with two homers, four RBIs and six runs scored in his last three games.

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (58-77) at Pittsburgh Pirates (63-72)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Reds at Pirates

Sep 2, 2017

The Pittsburgh Pirates opened September the way they closed August -- with a loss. The Pirates, who are losers of four in a row and 14 of their last 19 to stumble out of the race in the National League Central, will try to end the current slide when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

Pittsburgh was outscored 34-8 in its last four games and watched ace Gerrit Cole get knocked around in Friday's 7-3 setback. The Pirates are 11 1/2 games behind first-place Chicago in the Central but will still have a say in how the division shakes out with 16 games remaining against the Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds, who sit in last place in the Central, are trying to play spoiler as well and are 16-14 since the start of August as Joey Votto makes his case for some down-ballot MVP support and a series of young pitchers try to establish themselves in the majors. One of those young arms will get another chance to impress the front office on Saturday, when Tyler Mahle gets a turn opposite Pittsburgh righty Jameson Taillon.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Tyler Mahle (0-1, 5.40 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.75)

Mahle made his major league debut against Pittsburgh on Sunday and took the loss while allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in five innings. The 22-year-old struck out five and generated nine groundballs. Mahle was 10-7 with a 2.06 ERA in 24 starts across two minor league levels before getting called up.

Taillon surrendered only one earned run while going up against Mahle on Sunday but issued four walks and lasted only four innings without factoring in the decision. The 25-year-old failed to complete six innings in any of his last three outings while issuing a total of 12 walks in 14 frames. Taillon is making his fifth start of the season against Cincinnati and went 0-2 with an 8.20 ERA in the first four.

WALK-OFFS

1. Former Pirates RHP Juan Nicasio was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Phillies.

2. Cincinnati 2B Scooter Gennett is 8-for-20 with a home run, six RBIs and seven runs scored in his last five games.

3. Pittsburgh LF Starling Marte is 6-for-41 with 10 strikeouts in his last 10 games.

PREDICTION: Pirates 5, Reds 3

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (62-73) at Baltimore Orioles (69-66)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland

Preview: Blue Jays at Orioles
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

The Toronto Blue Jays very likely will miss the playoffs this season, and they are trying to prevent a division rival or two from making the postseason as well. The Blue Jays will attempt to play spoiler when they visit the wild card-hopeful Baltimore Orioles for the third contest of their four-game series on Saturday.

Toronto will play 15 more games against American League East playoff hopefuls Boston, New York and Baltimore after finishing the current series and also will meet wild-card challengers Minnesota and Kansas City down the stretch. The Blue Jays did their best in that role with a win on Thursday in the series opener but could not survive a battle of the bullpens a day later. The Orioles picked up their eighth win in nine games with a 1-0 triumph in 13 innings on Friday to move within 1 games of the Twins in the race for the second AL wild-card spot. Baltimore, which is just 2 games behind the Yankees for the first wild card, will send Wade Miley to the mound on Saturday opposite Marcus Stroman.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marcus Stroman (11-6, 3.11 ERA) vs. Orioles LH Wade Miley (8-10, 4.99)

Stroman pitched well enough to win last time out, allowing two runs - one earned - and seven hits against Boston on Monday, but was stuck without a decision when the bullpen coughed up a lead. The Duke product yielded one home run in that start and three in his previous turn after surrendering a total of one over a 10-start stretch. Stroman began that stretch against Baltimore on June 28, when he scattered five hits and struck out eight over 7 ? scoreless innings.

Miley allowed three or fewer runs in each of his last six starts and earned a win at Boston on Sunday by holding the AL East leaders to one run and seven hits in five innings. The Louisiana native still is battling control issues and has yielded at least three walks in each of his last five outings. Miley walked four while going up against Stroman on June 28 and was charged with four runs - three earned - in five innings as he absorbed the loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles 3B Manny Machado went 4-for-6 on Friday - his sixth multi-hit effort in nine games.

2. Baltimore SS J.J. Hardy (wrist) will remain on the 60-day disabled list after experiencing elbow discomfort during his rehab assignment.

3. Toronto 1B Justin Smoak (calf) was limited to pinch-hitting on Friday but is close to returning to the starting lineup.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 4, Orioles 2

GAME: Washington Nationals (81-53) at Milwaukee Brewers (71-64)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Nationals at Brewers
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

Jonathan Villar is heating up at just the right time for the Milwaukee Brewers, who continue their four-game series Saturday against the visiting National League East-leading Washington Nationals. After struggling for much of the season, Villar has gone 9-for-15 with five RBIs in his last four games to help Milwaukee move 3 1/2 games behind the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs and 1 1/2 back of Colorado for the second wild card.

Jimmy Nelson struck out 11 over seven shutout innings and Neil Walker belted a solo homer in Friday’s 1-0 victory as the Brewers improved to 61-6 when leading after seven innings. Closer Corey Knebel has not allowed a run in his last 19 games for Milwaukee, which has won three in a row and five of its last six. Washington struck out 17 times in Friday’s contest and wasted a stellar outing by starter Tanner Roark but still saw its magic number to win the NL East drop to 14 following Miami’s loss to Philadelphia. The Nationals’ bullpen received a boost before Friday’s game with the return of Ryan Madson, who was activated from the disabled list after missing the past 17 games with a sprained right finger.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (13-5, 2.21 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 1.62)

After missing two starts with inflammation in the left side of his neck, Scherzer allowed one run and had 10 strikeouts in an 11-2 victory over Miami last Monday. The two-time Cy Young award winner posted a 2.05 ERA in four starts last month and has won his last five decisions dating back to June 27. Ryan Braun is hitless in 13 at-bats against Scherzer, who is 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in seven career starts against the Brewers and has allowed one earned run or fewer in five of those outings.

Woodruff has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs for his second stint with the Brewers after pitching well in his first three career starts. The 24-year-old native of Mississippi was sent to the minors on Aug. 20 because the Brewers had several upcoming off days and wanted to keep the rookie on schedule. Woodruff received a no-decision in his last start with Milwaukee on Aug. 19, when he allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings at Colorado.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee C Manny Pina (hip) has not played since Tuesday and remains listed as day-to-day.

2. Washington activated LHP Enny Romero (forearm) from the disabled list and recalled RHP Erick Fedde, RHP Austin Adams, and C Raudy Read from the minors.

3. The Brewers recalled OF Brett Phillips, RHP Junior Guerra and LHP Wei-Chung Wang from Colorado Springs along with RHP Taylor Williams from Double-A Biloxi.

The Kansas City Royals posted a crucial victory in the series opener and look to add another win when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Saturday in the middle contest of a three-game set. Mike Moustakas slugged a three-run homer to fuel a 7-6 victory on Friday that moved the Royals within 3 1/2 games of the Twins for the American League's second wild-card spot.

Moustakas' blast was his first since Aug. 15 and 36th season of the season to tie Steve Balboni (1985) for the franchise single-season mark. Melky Cabrera, who is just 2-for-23 against scheduled Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson, tied a season high of four hits on Friday to help Kansas City win for just the second time in eight games. Minnesota saw its four-game winning streak come to an end and the Twins trail the New York Yankees by one game for the first wild-card berth while leading the Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore by 1 1/2 for the second. Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco went deep in the opener and has seven homers in the past 12 contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Onelki Garcia (0-0, 7.94 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (8-10, 5.59)

Garcia will be making his first major-league start in the rotation spot of injured Danny Duffy after going 7-3 with a 4.75 ERA in the minors with stops at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha. The 28-year-old Cuban was signed out of the Mexican League last fall after fearing his big-league career was over when the Chicago White Sox organization released him in the spring of 2016. "I never put my head down," Garcia told the Kansas City Star. "There were times I wanted to give it up and get a job doing something else because I wasn't seeing any progress. But my wife pushed me to keep going. She kept telling me baseball was what I liked to do, what I know how to do."

Gibson has won back-to-back decisions and struck out 15 while allowing three runs in 13 2/3 innings during the stretch. The 29-year-old has struggled at home this season by going 3-7 with a 6.57 ERA in 12 starts at Target Field. Gibson has a 5.23 ERA in two no-decisions versus the Royals this season and stands 5-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 career starts against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Friday's victory was just the Royals' second in seven games at Target Field this season.

2. Minnesota C Jason Castro (concussion) is making progress and could be activated early next week.

3. Among Kansas City's Sept. 1 roster moves were claiming RHP Sam Gaviglio off waivers from the Seattle Mariners, activating RHP Trevor Cahill (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list and releasing RHP Neftali Feliz (who was on DL with an elbow injury).

PREDICTION: Twins 8, Royals 5

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (51-83) at Miami Marlins (66-68)

Preview: Phillies at Marlins
Gracenote

The Miami Marlins will try to stop an ill-timed five-game losing streak when they host the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in the third of a four-game series. The Marlins were on the verge of ending their slide before giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning and falling 2-1 on Friday night.

Brad Ziegler had excelled in the closer's role before coughing it up for Miami, which stands six games out of a wild card position in the National League. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton has finally cooled off for the Marlins, going 0-for-11 with three strikeouts over his last three games to remain stuck on 51 home runs. He has a home run, a double and a single in six at-bats against Aaron Nola, who gets the start for the Phillies on Saturday. Philadelphia rookie standout Rhys Hoskins has also looked a bit more human with five straight homerless games after he went deep in his previous five contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (10-9, 3.46 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (8-8, 3.80)

Nola rebounded from a pair of rocky outings to dominate Atlanta over seven innings on Monday. He limited the Braves to a run and five hits with zero walks and six strikeouts to reach double digits in victories for the first time in his career. One of Nola's recent missteps was against Miami on Aug. 22, when he was pounded for seven runs in 6 1/3 frames, leaving the 24-year-old with a with a 4.30 ERA in five career meetings with the Marlins.

Straily has tossed consecutive quality starts for the first time since the first week of July after limiting San Diego to two runs in six innings his last time out. He has 15 strikeouts in 12 innings over his last two outings while allowing just eight hits. The Marshall University product struck out 10 opposite Nola two turns ago and has 27 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings against the Phillies in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ziegler spun 13 scoreless innings in August before blowing the save and allowing both runs on the first day of September.

2. Marlins LF Marcell Ozuna is 1-for-16 with six strikeouts over a four-game swoon.

3. Hoskins has reached base safely in 16 straight games.

PREDICTION: Marlins 4, Phillies 3

Logan Morrison keeps hitting home runs and his Tampa Bay Rays have a chance to clinch a fourth consecutive series victory when they visit the American League-worst Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Morrison went deep for the fifth time in five games in Friday’s 3-1 series-opening victory and has hit safely in six straight contests, going 11-for-25 with 11 RBIs during that stretch.

The Rays have won eight of 11 overall and are 5-2 on their nine-game road trip as they've moved within three games of Minnesota for the AL’s second wild card after recording their 26th homer in the last 12 contests. All-Star Chris Archer will try to notch his 10th victory and continue Tampa Bay’s surge when he takes the mound for the middle game of the series against Carlos Rodon, who attempts to end Chicago’s four-game slide. White Sox slugger Jose Abreu, who could return to the lineup after missing the last two contests with an elbow injury, has collected 21 RBIs - three against Archer - in 23 career games versus the Rays. Chicago All-Star Avisail Garcia takes a nine-game hitting streak into the contest after going 1-for-4 on Friday as he's registered 13 hits in 32 at-bats during that span.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (9-7, 3.66 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.27)

Archer held St. Louis to one run and five hits over seven innings in a no-decision last time out and is 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA over his last five starts. The 28-year-old North Carolina native has completed at least six frames in 18 of his last 19 outings while recording 14 quality starts, including one on June 6 against the White Sox in which he gave up two runs in seven innings of a loss.
