The Texas Rangers attempt to surpass the .500 mark and further tangle a jammed wild-card race when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Texas evened its record after 134 games and pulled within three of Minnesota for the second wild card in the American League by outlasting Los Angeles 10-9 in Friday's series opener.

The Rangers had seven of their 11 hits go for extra bases, with every starter in the lineup notching at least one hit as they squandered 6-2 and 9-4 leads before emerging victorious. Joey Gallo belted a solo homer while filling in at third base for the injured Adrian Beltre, who will miss at least four weeks with a strained left hamstring suffered Thursday against Houston. Los Angeles remained 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota as it had its three-game winning streak halted. Albert Pujols went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs, allowing him to pass Willie Mays for ninth place on the all-time RBI list with 1,904.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FS1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (6-12, 5.09 ERA) vs. Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (6-5, 5.26)

Nolasco finished the month of August unbeaten in six starts, going 2-0 with a 5.17 ERA after escaping with a no-decision against Houston on Sunday after yielding four runs in six innings. The streak has come after the 34-year-old Californian went 0-3 with an 8.38 ERA over his final four outings in July. Nolasco struggled in his first two turns against Texas this season, surrendering 13 runs and 15 hits over 6 2/3 frames in a pair of losses, and managed to allow just one run in a no-decision on Aug. 22 after giving up five hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings.

Griffin allowed three runs in each of his last two starts but was saddled with the loss in both, including at Oakland on Sunday after yielding five hits - two homers - and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old, who also hails from the Golden State, has worked more than five frames just once in five outings since returning from an intercostal strain that sidelined him for more than two months. Griffin improved to 4-2 in nine career starts against the Angels on April 12, when he gave up three runs in six innings at Los Angeles.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers SS Elvis Andrus led the majors with 13 doubles in August, the most in one month in team history since Mark DeRosa recorded 13 in May 2006.

2. Texas activated LHP Jake Diekman (colitis) from the 60-day disabled list and recalled 3B Will Middlebrooks, RHP Paolo Espino and C A.J. Jimenez from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.

3. Los Angeles purchased the contract of LHP Jason Gurka and recalled C Carlos Perez, SS Nolan Fontana and RHP Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Salt Lake.

PREDICTION: Angels 6, Rangers 4

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (77-58) at Colorado Rockies (72-62)

Preview: Diamondbacks at Rockies
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

Red-hot Patrick Corbin strives to win his fifth consecutive start when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. The left-hander has allowed just one run in 30 1/3 innings over his last four starts and will be looking to help Arizona extend its season-high winning streak to nine games.

The Diamondbacks registered a 9-5 victory in Friday's series opener to increase their lead for the National League's first wild card to 4 1/2 games over the Rockies. Arizona, which has won 10 of its last 11 contests, has scored 41 runs over its past five games. The Rockies have dropped eight of their last 12 contests and suddenly are just 1 1/2 games ahead of fast-charging Milwaukee for the second wild card. Colorado All-Star Charlie Blackmon is 16-for-37 with three homers during his nine-game hitting streak.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (12-11, 3.91 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (6-3, 4.18)

Corbin has recorded 29 strikeouts against five walks and allowed just 18 hits during the best stretch of his career. The 28-year-old had a shaky 4.76 ERA prior to his streak of stellar outings and is two victories shy of matching the career high he set in 2013. Corbin is 5-3 with a 5.23 ERA in 15 career appearances (14 starts) versus the Rockies - 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in two 2017 starts - and has fared well against Nolan Arenado (6-for-32, one homer).

Gray has won three of his last four decisions, including a victory over Atlanta in his last outing as he gave up five hits over six scoreless innings. The 25-year-old is 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA in five home starts this season and 11-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 24 career outings at Coors Field. Gray is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career turns against the Diamondbacks, with the victory coming on June 30 as he struck out a season-best 10 batters in six innings while allowing two runs and seven hits.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks RF J.D. Martinez scored twice and recorded an RBI in the opener and has registered 13 homers and 30 RBIs in 38 games since being acquired from Detroit.

2. Colorado All-Star 2B DJ LeMahieu is riding a season-high nine-game hitting streak, going 14-for-38 with three homers during the stretch.

3. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-3 with two walks in the opener to remain four hits shy of 1,000 for his career.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 3

GAME: New York Mets (58-75) at Houston Astros (80-53)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 02 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Mets at Astros (Game 2)
Gracenote
Sep 1, 2017

The Astros could be forgiven if their undivided attention wasn't on baseball this week, playing a three-game "home" series in St. Petersburg, Fla., while flooding devastated the city of Houston. The American League West leaders hope to provide a "welcome distraction" - in the words of team president Reid Ryan - for their fans as much as anything when they return to Minute Maid Park on Saturday for a split doubleheader against the New York Mets.

After losing its first two games in Florida by a combined score of 20-3 to Texas, Houston avoided a sweep with Thursday's 5-1 victory before the front office gave the team a much-needed jolt by dealing for six-time All-Star right-hander Justin Verlander from Detroit minutes before the waiver trade deadline. "I think he'll add a dimension we don't have. He's pitched well his whole career and has been pitching well lately. I think he'll add a dimension in the playoffs, hopefully, when we get there," team owner Jim Crane told MLB.com. The Astros also landed outfielder Cameron Maybin off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the evening, providing the team with some reinforcements as they attempt to maintain their 12-game division lead. The Mets, who will spend Friday helping the recovery efforts in Houston, went 10-20 in August after suffering their third loss in four games Thursday at Cincinnati.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Seth Lugo (5-3, 4.85 ERA) vs. Astros RH Brad Peacock (10-2, 3.12)

Lugo came off a short stint on the disabled list Sunday and settled for his third consecutive no-decision, permitting two runs on four hits while striking out five in 3 2/3 frames at Washington. The Louisiana native did not walk a batter after issuing four free passes in his previous turn but has a 5.59 ERA in nine road appearances (eight starts) this season. Lugo, who faces Houston for the first time, has not fared particularly well in interleague action while going 0-2 with a 5.73 ERA in three games (two starts).

Despite remaining winless since Aug. 4, Peacock continued his breakout campaign with last Saturday's no-decision against the Angels as he allowed only a solo homer among three hits while fanning eight in six frames. The 29-year-old has held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in nine of the last 13 outings, going 7-1 with a 3.10 ERA over that stretch. Peacock hasn't squared off versus the Mets since 2014 but has yielded only one run across 9 2/3 frames in two starts against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros traded three of their top 11 prospects - RHP Franklin Perez, OF Daz Cameron and C Jake Rogers - to acquire Verlander.

2. New York entered Friday tied for the National League lead with 193 homers but failed to hit one in three games against the Reds, who have surrendered a major-league high 215.

3. Houston placed C/DH Evan Gattis on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with right wrist soreness and designated RHP Dayan Diaz for assignment to clear room for Maybin.

The Seattle Mariners' wild-card chances were on the verge of vanishing before the team received a visit from the Oakland Athletics. Seattle snapped its losing streak with a triumph in the series opener and look to make it two in a row when it hosts Oakland on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set.

The Mariners had lost five in a row to fall 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild card in the American League, with four more teams between them, before edging the Athletics 3-2 on Friday to make up one game. Mike Zunino homered during a three-run third inning to help Mike Leake pick up the win in his debut for the team after being acquired from St. Louis earlier in the week. Oakland has lost each of the first four contests on its six-game road trip and five straight away from home since winning at Baltimore on Aug. 22. Matt Joyce collected three of the Athletics' eight hits on Friday and has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jharel Cotton (7-10, 5.40 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Yovani Gallardo (5-10, 5.78)

Cotton is looking to win three straight starts for the first time in his major-league career. The 25-year-old Virgin Islander allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings in a triumph at Houston on Aug. 20 and limited Texas to two runs - one earned - while matching a career high with nine strikeouts en route to victory seven days later. Cotton faced the Mariners at home twice this season, giving up two runs in a win on April 22 before getting tagged for six runs and eight hits - three homers - in a loss on Aug. 9.

Gallardo is hoping a new month brings better results as he went 0-3 with a 7.46 ERA in five starts in August, losing each of his last three turns. The 31-year-old Mexican surrendered eight home runs over 25 1/3 innings in those five outings after serving up only three over 19 frames in July. Gallardo entered the season with an 0-5 career record against Oakland but is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in four turns in 2017.

WALK-OFFS

1. Oakland activated OF Jake Smolinski and C Josh Phegley from the 60- and 10-day disabled lists, respectively, and recalled LHP Sam Moll and SS Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Nashville while learning that RHP Paul Blackburn (hand) likely will miss the remainder of the season.

2. The Mariners parted ways with RHP Sam Gaviglio, who was claimed off waivers by Kansas City after going 3-5 with a 4.62 ERA in 12 games (11 starts).

3. Seattle made a bevy of roster moves Friday, placing RHP David Phelps (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list, activating CF Jarrod Dyson and RHP Shae Simmons from the 10- and 60-day DLs, respectively, purchasing the contract of C Mike Marjama from Triple-A Tacoma and recalling RHPs Ryan Garton, Andrew Moore and Dan Altavilla from the Rainiers.

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (92-41) at San Diego Padres (59-75)

WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California

Preview: Dodgers at Padres (Game 2)
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers have ended their season-worst slide and look to add two wins to their major league-best total when they visit the San Diego Padres for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Dodgers halted their five-game losing streak with a 1-0 triumph on Friday in the opener of the four-game series to improve their stellar record to 92-41.

Clayton Kershaw (back) allowed two hits in six innings in his first appearance since July 23 as Los Angeles' pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts. Chris Taylor is filling in at shortstop for Corey Seager, who is limited to pinch-hitting duties due to an elbow injury, and notched two hits as he is 6-for-17 during his four-game hitting streak. Wil Myers struck out twice in three hitless at-bats for San Diego as his home-run drought reached 18 games. Austin Hedges also is struggling through a 3-for-22 funk over his last seven contests.
TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Yu Darvish (8-10, 3.88 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jordan Lyles (0-2, 6.94)

Darvish is 2-1 in four starts since being acquired from Texas and lost to Milwaukee in his last turn, when he gave up three runs and six hits over five innings. The 31-year-old has recorded 29 strikeouts in 23 frames with Los Angeles, including 10 in each of his first two outings. Darvish is 1-0 with a 3.23 ERA in two career starts against the Padres - the most-recent one occurring on May 10, when he gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings in a no-decision as a member of the Rangers.

Lyles was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to make his San Diego debut and is starting for the first time this season after making 33 relief appearances for Colorado. "He was throwing the ball well at the end in El Paso," Padres manager Andy Green told reporters. "We definitely need somebody to come up here and take down some innings for us and give us an opportunity to win games, and he fits that description perfectly." The 26-year-old Lyles is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in 13 career appearances (five starts) versus the Dodgers.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers are 10-3 against the Padres this season, including a 5-1 record at Petco Park.

2. Prized OF prospect Alex Verdugo was recalled by Los Angeles, and the 21-year-old went 0-for-3 in his major-league debut.

3. San Diego fired hitting coach Alan Zinter, who was nearing completion of his second season on the job.

PREDICTION: Padres 5, Dodgers 3
