DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 09 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio

Preview: Orioles at Indians
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Cleveland Indians have been unbeatable the last two weeks and can extend their franchise record to 17 straight victories when they host the suddenly-fading Baltimore Orioles on Saturday afternoon. The Indians pushed their streak to 16 games - the longest in the majors since Oakland won 20 in a row in 2002 - with a 5-0 triumph over the Orioles on Friday night and have allowed a total of 28 runs during the magical run with five shutouts.

Edwin Encarnacion has led the Indians’ offense of late, homering and driving in three runs for the second straight game Friday while extending his hitting streak to nine games (14-for-34, four home runs, 12 RBIs). Veteran Josh Tomlin will try to keep the winning streak going when he takes the mound Saturday against fellow right-hander Gabriel Ynoa, who makes his first start for Baltimore. The Orioles have dropped four of their last six contests and trail Minnesota, by three games for the American League’s second wild-card after managing one total run in the last two outings. Trey Mancini notched half of his team's four hits - all singles - in Friday’s loss for Baltimore and has multiple hits in three of his last six contests.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 3.68 ERA) vs. Indians RH Josh Tomlin (8-9, 5.20)

Ynoa makes his first major-league start this season and the fourth of his career after pitching two hitless innings against the New York Yankees on Monday. The 24-year-old Dominican pitched in relief against Cleveland twice in 2017, permitting one run on six hits over 5 1/3 innings combined. Ynoa, who is 6-9 with Triple-A Norfolk this season, made three starts for the New York Mets last year while producing a 3.18 ERA over 11 1/3 innings.

Tomlin was solid in a win during his first start in almost a month after coming off the disabled list, yielding one run on six hits and one walk over 5 2/3 innings at Detroit. The 32-year-old Texan has given up three or fewer runs in five straight starts, going 4-0 in that stretch with 24 strikeouts versus a pair of walks. Adam Jones (11-for-21, one homer) and Manny Machado (4-for-6, two homers) have caused trouble for Tomlin.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore 1B/DH Chris Davis needs one home run to tie Rafael Palmeiro (223) for sixth on the club’s all-time list.

2. Cleveland 1B/DH Carlos Santana is 9-for-18 with a pair of homers over the last five games to raise his average to .262.

3. The Orioles activated SS J.J. Hardy (wrist) from the disabled list and designated LHP Andrew Faulkner for assignment.

PREDICTION: Indians 7, Orioles 4

GAME: New York Yankees (75-65) at Texas Rangers (71-69)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 09 - 1:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Yankees at Rangers
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Texas Rangers are slugging their way toward the top of the American League wild-card race and will try to inch closer to one of the primary contenders when they continue a three-game series with the visiting New York Yankees on Saturday. Elvis Andrus went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace the Rangers' 15-hit attack in Friday's 11-5 rout of the Yankees.

Andrus is 11-for-23 with 10 RBIs and six runs scored during a five-game hitting streak for Texas, which remained within 2 1/2 games of Minnesota in the race for the second wild-card in the AL. New York blew an early 5-1 lead in Friday's tilt and fell for the 13th time in its last 19 matchups with Texas. The Yankees' lead in the wild-card race sits at 1 1/2 games over Minnesota while their deficit in the AL East is 4 1/2 games behind first-place Boston. Ace Luis Severino will try to slow down the Rangers' offense when he toes the rubber opposite Andrew Cashner for Texas on Saturday.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Severino (12-6, 3.03 ERA) vs. Raners RH Andrew Cashner (9-9, 3.29)

Severino dominated Boston on Sunday, limiting the division rivals to one unearned run and two hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. It was the eighth time in 10 starts that the 23-year-old has allowed one earned run or fewer, and the fourth straight outing in which he fanned at least eight batters. Severino's one career outing at Texas last April resulted in six runs allowed over three frames.

Cashner is aiming to become a 10-game winner for the first time since 2013 after defeating Atlanta on Monday. He held the Braves to two runs across six innings to improve to 5-1 in his last six decisions. The 30-year-old TCU product has a 2.08 ERA through two career starts against the Yankees but has had his issues with Todd Frazier (5-for-11, all doubles) and Didi Gregorius (4-for-13, one home run, two doubles).

WALK-OFFS

1. New York's upcoming series against Tampa Bay - which runs Monday through Wednesday - has been moved from Florida to Citi Field in New York due to Hurricane Irma.

2. Gregorius homered Friday and has six RBIs and six runs scored during a four-game hitting streak.

3. The Rangers have 45 home runs in their last 22 home games.

PREDICTION: Yankees 6, Rangers 4

The Houston Astros look to avenge their only loss this month when they visit the Oakland Athletics for a doubleheader on Saturday. Houston won its first six games of September and seven straight overall before dropping a 9-8 decision on Friday.

Former Athletic Josh Reddick drove in four runs while reaching base five times for the Astros, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a homer while drawing a pair of walks. Jose Altuve ended his three-game hitless streak, going 2-for-5 with a homer to raise his major league leading batting average to .352 as Houston remained 14 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for first place in the American League West. Oakland scored four times in the seventh inning Friday on Marcus Semien's grand slam to erase a 7-3 deficit and Blake Treinen allowed an RBI double by Reddick in the top of the ninth before the Athletics plated two in the bottom half on Boog Powell's homer and Jed Lowrie's RBI single. It was the second straight victory for Oakland, which had lost eight in a row.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Charlie Morton (11-6, 3.87 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Gossett (3-8, 5.32)

Morton is coming off a victory over the New York Mets last Saturday in which he allowed two runs and six hits while recording nine strikeouts over five innings. The 33-year-old native of New Jersey served up a home run in the triumph, marking just the second time he has been taken deep in his last six turns. Morton made his only career start against Oakland on April 28, when he registered 12 strikeouts while giving up four runs in seven innings of a victory.

Gossett has not started at home since July 28, when he yielded five runs and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings of a loss to Minnesota. The 24-year-old native of South Carolina has gone 1-2 in four turns on the road since, including a loss at Seattle on Sunday in which he surrendered three runs on seven hits and five walks over 3 2/3 frames. Gossett has yet to defeat Houston in his brief career, allowing seven runs over 11 2/3 innings in losing a pair of starts in June.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros are expected to activate C Evan Gattis (wrist) from the disabled list on Sunday.

2. Oakland had five players produce multi-hit performances on Friday, with Ryon Healy and Matt Chapman recording three apiece.

3. Houston activated RHP Michael Feliz (shoulder), who has gone 4-2 with a 5.04 ERA in 42 relief appearances, from the 10-day DL on Friday.

The Milwaukee Brewers showed some signs of life in the series opener and hope to build on that when they visit the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon for the middle game of the set. Ryan Braun belted his 300th career homer in a 2-0 victory Friday that moved the Brewers within four games of the Cubs in the division and gave them a boost after losing three in a row to last-place Cincinnati.

Braun is batting .336 in his career against Chicago and his two-run blast helped Milwaukee stay three games behind Colorado for the NL’s second wild-card spot. Chase Anderson will pitch in his 100th career contest (99th start) for the Brewers in the middle game of the series while the Cubs counter with lefty Mike Montgomery as they go for a ninth victory in 13 outings. Chicago was shut out for the second time in five contests Friday as it managed five hits against four Milwaukee pitchers and just one for extra bases (Ben Zobrist, double). Kris Bryant had a single for the Cubs and has reached base in 33 straight contests, going 40-for-123 with five homers and 12 RBIs during that stretch.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Chase Anderson (8-3, 3.06 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (5-7, 3.38)

Anderson gave up four runs (three earned) over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision last time out against Cincinnati and is 3-1 in his last seven outings. The 29-year-old Texan can match his career high with his ninth victory, but has not been as good on the road (4-3, 3.74 ERA) as he has been at home (4-0, 2.40). Bryant is 4-for-11 with three homers against Anderson, who is 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA in five career games against the Cubs.

Montgomery allowed three runs, five hits and one walk over five innings in a loss to Atlanta last time out after winning his previous two outings. The 28-year-old Californian is 4-4 with a 4.17 ERA in 11 starts this year and owns a 1-3 record along with a 2.57 mark in 27 relief appearances. Braun is 4-for-9 with a homer versus Montgomery, who is 1-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 10 outings (three starts) against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago RHP Wade Davis has converted all 29 of his save opportunities this season and gave up one run in his last nine outings.

2. The Brewers are 1-50 when trailing after seven innings and 0-52 when behind going into the ninth frame.

3. Cubs C Willson Contreras (hamstring) played a rehab game Friday and will be re-evaluated when he returns to Chicago soon.

PREDICTION: Brewers 5, Cubs 4

GAME: Detroit Tigers (60-80) at Toronto Blue Jays (64-77)

Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Detroit Tigers may have nothing left to play for this season, but that doesn't mean they've given up. The Tigers will try to build on a strong performance when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series.

Detroit officially raised the white flag on the season at the Aug. 31 trade deadline by dealing away Justin Upton and Justin Verlander, but building blocks for the future like Nick Castellanos still remain. Castellanos was the offensive star on Friday, belting his third career grand slam in the 5-4 win while another youngster, rookie third baseman Jeimer Candelario, highlighted the defensive effort by starting a triple play. The Blue Jays sit in last place in the American League East and are losers of three straight and nine of their last 12 games. Toronto is giving several players longer looks in September, and one will get the ball on Saturday as Brett Anderson starts against Detroit's Chad Bell.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Chad Bell (0-2, 5.98 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH Brett Anderson (2-3, 6.42)

Bell is getting a second chance to earn a spot in Detroit's rotation after struggling in his debut start against Cleveland on Sunday. The 28-year-old rookie was knocked around for five runs and eight hits in four innings while notching just one strikeout and absorbing the loss. Bell, who made his first 19 appearances out of the bullpen, has surrendered 57 hits while issuing 22 walks in 46 2/3 frames.

Anderson is making his third start for Toronto and looking for his first win despite pitching well against Boston and Baltimore. The 29-year-old, who began the season with the Chicago Cubs before being released in May, surrendered one run in 5 2/3 innings against the Red Sox and held Baltimore to three runs in six frames on Sunday. Anderson issued 12 free passes in six appearances with Chicago but has yet to walk a batter with the Blue Jays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays OF Steve Pearce left Friday's game with stiffness in his lower back and is day-to-day.

2. Detroit RHP Jordan Zimmermann (neck) is not expected to throw for at least the next three days after receiving a nerve block injection.

3. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson was scratched from Friday's lineup due to illness and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 7, Tigers 3

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (53-88) at Washington Nationals (87-54)

Preview: Phillies at Nationals
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

Bryce Harper hasn't played in close to a month, but the recent contributions of another outfielder for the Washington Nationals has the National League East leaders on the verge of clinching a second consecutive division title. Michael Taylor attempts to follow up the best performance of his career on Saturday as the Nationals play the third contest of their four-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Washington lowered its magic number for clinching the East to three with Friday's wild 11-10 win as Taylor went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, including a third-inning inside-the-park grand slam and an eighth-inning RBI triple while finishing a double shy of the cycle. The Nationals maintained their 19-game division lead over Miami with their fifth straight victory and the 26-year-old Taylor has played a huge part in the surge, going 7-for-12 with two homers, a triple, a double and four runs scored in his last three games. The major league-worst Phillies (53-88) became the first team to be mathematically eliminated from postseason contention with the setback and moved within three losses of matching their total from last season. Despite only winning five of the 14 meetings this year, Philadelphia has given Washington its fair share of trouble, playing eight one-run games and four two-run contests.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Mark Leiter Jr. (2-5, 4.74 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Edwin Jackson (5-4, 3.62)

Leiter endured the worst outing of his brief major-league career Monday against the New York Mets, taking the loss on the road after giving up nine runs - eight earned - and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old Floridian, who is 1-3 with a 7.53 ERA in 14 road appearances (four starts), had been solid over his first six turns of the season, posting a 3.34 ERA. Leiter held the Nationals in check over two scoreless relief innings on May 6, when he yielded one hit and two walks.

Jackson saw his streak of four straight quality starts snapped in a loss at Milwaukee on Sunday after he permitted five runs - four earned - and five hits in 5 2/3 frames. The outing removed some of the luster from the 33-year-old's strong run in his second tenure with the club as he fell to 5-4 with a 3.29 ERA in nine turns with Washington this year. Jackson is 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA at Nationals Park in 2017 but only 2-6 with a 6.00 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington SS Trea Turner is 6-for-12 with a homer, five RBIs and four runs scored over his last three contests.

2. Philadelphia OF Odubel Herrera singled in the seventh inning on Friday to extend his hitting streak to 21 games - the longest in the majors this season.

3. Each of the last four meetings between the teams has been decided by one run.

PREDICTION: Nationals 6, Phillies 5

Freddie Freeman fractured his left wrist in May and has acknowledged strength in the injured area has not returned fully, but the Atlanta Braves first baseman is hot at the plate entering Saturday’s home contest with the Miami Marlins. Freeman slugged his 25th homer of the season in Friday’s 7-1 defeat, and is batting .407 in his past seven games with seven runs scored, seven RBIs and six extra-base hits.

Despite Freeman’s good work of late the Braves continue to struggle in the second half of the season, falling to 17-33 since July 17. Miami snapped a five-game losing streak Friday and won for just the second time in its past 12 contests. Second baseman Dee Gordon extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a seventh-inning single, is batting .416 during that streak and stole his 50th base of the season in the ninth. The Marlins also got a double and a run scored from first baseman Justin Bour – who is hitting .319 in his career against the Braves – in his return from the disabled list.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (6-7, 5.09 ERA) vs. Braves LH Max Fried (1-0, 3.86)

Conley has done his best work away from home, posting a 2.89 ERA with a 4-3 record in eight starts. He did struggle in Atlanta in his only appearance against the Braves this season, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits in taking the loss Aug. 4. The 27-year-old has made 10 starts since returning from the minor leagues in July, going 4-4 with a 3.92 ERA in that stretch.

Fried earned his first major-league victory in his first big-league start Sunday, holding the Cubs to one run on four hits in five innings with three walks and four strikeouts. The 23-year-old pitched out of the bullpen in August, giving up four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in four appearances. Fried struggled to a 2-11 record at Double-A Mississippi, but posted a 2.19 ERA across his final four starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami RF Giancarlo Stanton – baseball’s leading home-run hitter with 53 but mired in a 3-for-33 slump – did not start Friday but was intentionally walked as a pinch hitter.

2. Atlanta C Tyler Flowers (left wrist bruise) returned from the disabled list and started Friday, while RF Nick Markakis remains sidelined with a sore right wrist and likely will miss the rest of the series.

3. Marlins CF Christian Yelich collected two hits Friday and is batting .318 lifetime against Atlanta.

PREDICTION: Braves 4, Marlins 2

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (61-81) at New York Mets (62-79)

Sep 9, 2017

Jose Reyes' baseball future is murky beyond the end of this season, but he's making the best of it while trying to prove he can help a team next year. Reyes will try to remain hot and lead the New York Mets to another win when they host the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series.

The former All-Star shortstop is getting another chance at the position - and at the top of the batting order - due to injuries and homered twice in Friday's 5-1 triumph. The 34-year-old Reyes is batting .238 with a .307 on-base percentage but has hit safely in 10 of his 11 starts since coming off the disabled list last month. The Reds swept a three-game series against playoff-contending Milwaukee earlier this week but have watched the bats go cold in New York as the team managed a total of three runs while dropping the first two contests of the series. Cincinnati will try to put some better swings on the ball against Rafael Montero, who faces Reds veteran Homer Bailey on Saturday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Homer Bailey (4-7, 7.24 ERA) vs. Mets RH Rafael Montero (4-9, 5.21)

Bailey finally is starting to come around after a rough couple of months while returning from injury. The veteran Texan put together back-to-back quality starts and held Milwaukee to three runs and six hits in six innings on Sunday without walking a batter. Bailey started against the Mets on Aug. 30 and suffered a loss despite yielding two runs and four hits in six frames.

Montero is coming off his second consecutive victory, an outing against Philadelphia on Monday in which he was fortunate to win after yielding four runs on five hits and five walks over 5 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old Dominican was much better in his previous turn as he scattered three hits while recording a season-high eight strikeouts over 8 1/3 scoreless frames in a triumph at Cincinnati on Aug. 30. Montero made his first career start against the Reds on Sept. 6, 2016, when he gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision on the road.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets INF Asdrubal Cabrera (back) sat out Friday and is day-to-day.

2. Cincinnati RHP Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) threw a 20-pitch simulated game on Friday.

3. New York rookie SS Amed Rosario (finger) missed his fifth straight game on Friday and remains day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Reds 8, Mets 5

Preview: Giants at White Sox
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The San Francisco Giants will try for their first three-game winning streak in over two months when they continue a three-game interleague series at the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Pablo Sandoval snapped an 0-for-39 plunge - the longest hitless streak in San Francisco history - with a three-run homer to start the scoring in Friday's 9-2 win in the series opener.

Joe Panik followed up a remarkable 12-for-15 stretch in a series at Colorado with a base hit and a run scored for the Giants. The White Sox have dropped five straight - all at home - while allowing an average of 7.8 runs. San Francisco right-hander Jeff Samardzija returns to Guaranteed Rate Field for the first time since he won 11 games with the White Sox in 2015. He will try to reach double figures in wins for the third straight year when he gets the nod opposite fellow veteran James Shields for Chicago.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (9-12, 4.31 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (2-6, 5.72)

Samardzija has allowed four earned runs in 36 innings in his career against the White Sox and enters this meeting on a roll. The Notre Dame product is 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA over his last eight starts after dominating St. Louis last Saturday with seven innings of one-run ball and nine strikeouts. He has a 4.58 ERA in 20 career games (18 starts) at Guaranteed Rate Field and an identical mark in 14 road starts this season.

Shields is 8-25 over the last two years after suffering back-to-back losses at Minnesota and versus Cleveland in his last two turns. The 35-year-old gave up four runs in both affairs, although he lasted 6 1/3 innings versus the Indians on Monday to match his longest start of the year. Shields owns a 2.62 ERA in seven career starts against the Giants, although Panik is 9-for-20 with three doubles against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. The White Sox placed LHP Carlos Rodon (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list, and he will miss the rest of the season.

2. Giants RH Mark Melancon (forearm), who signed a $62 million contract this offseason to be the closer, will have surgery next week and miss the rest of the season.

3. Chicago 3B Nicky Delmonico is 0-for-9 with four strikeouts in three games since returning from a wrist injury.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (70-72) at Boston Red Sox (80-61)

Sep 9, 2017

The Boston Red Sox need to take advantage of home games down the stretch, and they're doing just that on the current homestand. The Red Sox will try to post their fourth consecutive win and maintain their edge in the American League East when they host the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Boston took two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays to begin the homestand and is finally beginning to string hits together after going through a collective slump bridging August and September. The Red Sox finished off the Blue Jays with a 6-1 triumph on Wednesday and pounded out 12 hits in Friday's 9-3 triumph that left the team 4 1/2 games ahead of the New York Yankees in the East. The Rays, who will play a "home" series against the Yankees at Citi Field in New York next week to avoid the aftereffects of Hurricane Irma, are fighting to stay in the AL wild card race but dropped two games under .500 (70-72) with Friday's setback. Boston is in a strong position to clinch a win in the three-game series when it sends ace Chris Sale to the mound on Saturday opposite Tampa Bay's Matt Andriese.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Matt Andriese (5-2, 3.78 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Chris Sale (15-7, 2.85)

Andriese made his first start since coming back from a hip injury at the Chicago White Sox on Sunday and did not fare well, surrendering five runs and six hits in five innings. The 28-year-old tossed three scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance off the disabled list on Aug. 28 at Kansas City. Andriese allowed two runs in five innings to earn a win at Boston on May 14, his second victory in seven career appearances against the division rivals.

Sale suddenly finds himself in a battle for the AL Cy Young Award with Cleveland’s Corey Kluber and is fighting a history of fading in September. The Florida native needed 109 pitches to get through 4 1/3 innings at New York on Sunday and surrendered three solo home runs among seven hits in a loss. Sale had no trouble at all in his last meeting with Tampa Bay on Aug. 8, when he struck out 13 and scattered two hits over eight scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays RF Steven Souza Jr. left Friday's game with a bruised left knee.

2. Red Sox LF Andrew Benintendi went 2-for-5 on Friday, snapping an 0-for-20 drought entering the series.

3. Boston SS Xander Bogaerts is 4-for-40 since Aug. 26.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 6, Rays 1

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (67-75) at St. Louis Cardinals (73-68)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 09 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Pirates at Cardinals
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals have 21 games remaining to make a run for a playoff spot, which may be just enough time given their recent play and the fact they won't play another contest outside the division for the rest of the regular season. The Cardinals aim for their eighth victory in 10 contests Saturday, when they continue their three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

St. Louis moved within four games of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and remained three games behind Colorado for the second wild-card spot following a series-opening 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh, as Jose Martinez continued to swing a hot bat by going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Perhaps most importantly, Matt Carpenter (shoulder) and Tommy Pham (shoulder) returned to the lineup, drawing a total of four walks while scoring one run apiece. Pittsburgh quickly is falling out of postseason consideration, as it trails the Cubs by 10 1/2 games and Colorado by 9 1/2 in the wild-card race. Despite the return of Gregory Polanco to the lineup for the first time in nearly a month in the opener, the Pirates could not manage an extra-base hit to complement their nine singles and have scored only four runs during their three-game losing streak.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, AT&T Sportsnet-Pittsburgh, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (7-10, 4.32 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (11-10, 3.34)

Kuhl enjoyed his finest start of the season in a victory over the Cubs on Monday, allowing only four hits while striking out a career-high eight batters across seven scoreless innings. The outing marked the first time in five tries the 24-year-old lasted more than 5 1/3 frames and halted a stretch in which he had dropped three of four decisions. Kuhl's previous win came against the Cardinals on Aug. 19, when he permitted one run over five innings to improve to 1-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts versus St. Louis this season.

Martinez was dominant en route to his second career shutout Monday at San Diego, throwing 76 of his 109 pitches for strikes while giving up only three singles and striking out 10 for his fourth win in five decisions. The outing marked the fifth time this season the two-time All-Star has fanned at least 10 batters but was his first such effort since June 27. Martinez is 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in two starts against the Pirates in 2017, including a victory on Aug. 24 in which he gave up three runs in seven frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Jose Martinez is batting .484 with three homers and eight RBIs during his career-best 10-game hitting streak.

2. Pittsburgh OF Starling Marte is a career .329 hitter against the Cardinals and 12-for-25 all-time versus Carlos Martinez.

3. St. Louis rookie 2B/SS Paul DeJong, who went 8-for-42 during the team's recently completed 10-game road trip, did not start Friday for the first time since July 6.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 3, Pirates 1

Preview: Twins at Royals
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Minnesota Twins haven't participated in the postseason since 2010 but will be looking to protect their lead for the American League's second wild-card when they visit the Kansas Royals on Saturday. Minnesota won the first two contests of the four-game set and has won three straight games overall to gain a two-game edge over the Los Angeles Angels with 21 games to play.

Center fielder Eddie Rosario homered and drove in four runs in Friday's 8-5 victory and his stellar play includes 10 homers and 28 RBIs over his past 32 contests. Third baseman Eduardo Escobar is also hot after homering during his third three-hit game over the past seven outings, improving to 11-for-29 with four homers and 12 RBIs during the stretch. Kansas City is fading with 10 setbacks in its last 15 contests and sits 4 1/2 games behind the Twins. Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield has recorded three straight multi-hit outings and is 11-for-25 with six RBIs during his six-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jose Berrios (12-7, 4.01 ERA) vs. Royals RHP Jake Junis (7-2, 4.48)

Berrios lost to Tampa Bay on Monday when he gave up five runs and seven hits over five innings. The 23-year-old has struggled on the road, going 4-6 with a 5.43 ERA in 12 outings (as opposed to 8-1, 2.56 in nine home turns). Berrios received a no-decision against the Royals when he served up three homers in five innings while allowing five runs and nine hits on July 1 and is 0-1 with an 8.20 ERA in four career starts against Kansas City.

Junis has won back-to-back starts and five consecutive decisions. The 24-year-old rookie is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA with 18 strikeouts against just one walk in 16 innings over his last three turns. Junis received a no-decision when he made his first major-league start against the Twins on May 21 when he gave up two runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (knee) is expected to miss his second consecutive start.

2. Minnesota LHP Hector Santiago (shoulder) is unlikely to pitch again this season after struggling in his sixth rehab start for Triple-A Rochester.

3. Kansas City SS Alcides Escobar, who is 14-for-33 over the past 10 games, is 4-for-9 with a homer and five RBIs against Berrios.
