The Houston Astros look to avenge their only loss this month when they visit the Oakland Athletics for a doubleheader on Saturday. Houston won its first six games of September and seven straight overall before dropping a 9-8 decision on Friday.

Former Athletic Josh Reddick drove in four runs while reaching base five times for the Astros, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a homer while drawing a pair of walks. Jose Altuve ended his three-game hitless streak, going 2-for-5 with a homer to raise his major league leading batting average to .352 as Houston remained 14 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for first place in the American League West. Oakland scored four times in the seventh inning Friday on Marcus Semien's grand slam to erase a 7-3 deficit and Blake Treinen allowed an RBI double by Reddick in the top of the ninth before the Athletics plated two in the bottom half on Boog Powell's homer and Jed Lowrie's RBI single. It was the second straight victory for Oakland, which had lost eight in a row.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Brad Peacock (10-2, 3.05 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Daniel Mengden (0-1, 10.13)

Peacock is winless in his last five starts despite allowing just one earned run in four of the outings. The 29-year-old Floridian settled for a no-decision against the New York Mets last Saturday despite giving up one run and three hits over 5 1/3 innings. Peacock fell to 3-5 lifetime versus Oakland on Aug. 20, when he yielded three runs - one earned - and seven hits over 5 1/3 frames.

Mengden is back from Triple-A Nashville to make his third start of the season and first since June 3, when he escaped with a no-decision against Washington after surrendering four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old Texan made nine starts for Nashville this year, going 2-4 with a 4.17 ERA. Mengden got pounded in three turns against Houston last season, yielding 13 runs and 17 hits in 15 1/3 frames en route to an 0-2 record.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros are expected to activate C Evan Gattis (wrist) from the disabled list on Sunday.

2. Oakland had five players produce multi-hit performances on Friday, with Ryon Healy and Matt Chapman recording three hits apiece.

3. Houston activated RHP Michael Feliz (shoulder), who has gone 4-2 with a 5.04 ERA in 42 relief appearances, from the 10-day DL on Friday.

PREDICTION: Astros 11, Athletics 2

GAME: San Diego Padres (64-78) at Arizona Diamondbacks (82-59)

WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona

Preview: Padres at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Arizona Diamondbacks saw their franchise-best winning streak come to an end in the series opener and look to bounce back when they host the San Diego Padres on Saturday in the middle contest of their three-game series. Five Padres had multiple-hit performances in a 10-6 win on Friday that halted Arizona's string of victories at 13.

The Diamondbacks fell behind 8-0 on Friday and later pulled within two runs before suffering their first defeat since Aug. 23. Arizona's hot streak has all but assured the squad of a National League wild-card spot, but the defeat kept them 10 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. San Diego rookie Manuel Margot went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Erick Aybar 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the club's assault. The Padres have won five of their last eight games, scoring 32 runs in the victories and five in the defeats.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jhoulys Chacin (12-10, 3.96 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (7-7, 3.21)

Chacin defeated the Dodgers in his last turn as he gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits over seven innings. The 29-year-old, who went 0-3 over his previous five starts, is two victories away from matching his career-best total set in 2013. Chacin is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against the Diamondbacks this year and 6-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts).

Godley has won back-to-back starts after losing his previous three turns. The 27-year-old is 4-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 10 outings since the All-Star break after going 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA in 11 starts prior to the layoff. Godley is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA in two starts against San Diego this season and 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA in seven career appearances (four starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks All-Star 1B Paul Goldschmidt (elbow) missed his fifth straight game Friday but took batting and fielding practice prior to the contest and could be in Saturday's lineup.

2. Margot leads NL rookies with 35 multi-hit efforts.

3. Arizona RF J.D. Martinez went deep Friday for the 19th time in 43 games since being acquired from Detroit.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 7, Padres 5

GAME: Colorado Rockies (76-65) at Los Angeles Dodgers (92-49)

Preview: Rockies at Dodgers
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of Colorado Rockies veteran Carlos Gonzalez’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Gonzalez looks to remain hot Saturday as the Rockies continue their four-game series against the host Los Angeles Dodgers, who have lost a season-high eight straight contests and 13 of its last 14.

After struggling for much of the season, the 31-year-old Gonzalez is 10-for-21 with two home runs and seven RBIs over his last seven games for the Rockies, who have opened the series with back-to-back wins and hold a three-game lead over Milwaukee and St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot. “Hopefully, I can continue to keep doing that, especially right now when we need it the most, making a big run for the playoffs,” Gonzalez told reporters. “And of course, if we end up playing in the playoffs, you want to have you're A-game going.” Despite the Dodgers’ current slump, they still lead Arizona by 10 games in the NL West with 21 to play. Corey Seager returned to the lineup in Friday’s 5-4 loss and went 1-for-5 after dealing with elbow inflammation, and Justin Turner helped give the Dodgers an early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Chad Bettis (0-2, 4.91 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Alex Wood (14-2, 2.57)

Bettis still is seeking his first win of the season after allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings against San Francisco on Monday. The 28-year-old Texan struck out three without issuing a walk in his fifth start since returning from testicular cancer. Turner has six hits in nine at-bats against Bettis, who is 0-2 with a 5.64 ERA in eight career games (five starts) against Los Angeles, including a 6.75 ERA in five appearances (three starts) at Dodger Stadium.

Wood returned from the disabled list Sunday and allowed four runs over six innings while throwing 98 pitches in a 6-4 loss to San Diego. The 26-year-old made 14 consecutive starts without a loss to begin the season and has posted an impressive 134-to-33 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Wood has gone 4-2 with a 5.02 ERA in eight career starts against Colorado, including a 2-0 record and 0.75 ERA in two outings covering 12 innings this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu is batting .348 during his 16-game hitting streak.

2. Los Angeles is 26-10 against the Rockies at home since 2014.

3. The Rockies announced that RHP Tyler Chatwood will start Sunday’s series finale.

GAME: Los Angeles Angels (72-69) at Seattle Mariners (70-71)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 09 - 9:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Angels at Mariners
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels want to avoid losing more ground in the American League wild-card race, while the host Seattle Mariners want to take another step toward staying in the chase when the teams meet Saturday. The Mariners snapped a three-game slide with a 4-3 victory in the opener of the three-game series as Los Angeles fell two games behind Minnesota for the second wild card.

Seattle is four games behind the Twins, and Friday's victory was just its fourth in 12 contests. "I thought our guys were into it, loose and having a good time," Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters afterward. "We've got nothing to lose, just go play." Los Angeles has scored just four total runs while losing its last two games and Albert Pujols narrowly missed a tying homer in the ninth inning while playing with a bone bruise in his left knee. "It's something that's he's been playing with. It's something that we hope he can manage in the last 20-plus games and, hopefully, playoffs," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters. "The thing about Albert is he works hard at maintenance that needs to be done."

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (1-1, 6.98 ERA) vs. Mariners LHP Andrew Albers (3-1, 3.43)

Heaney has served up a startling 11 homers in just 19 1/3 innings over four starts this season. The 26-year-old returned from Tommy John surgery on Aug. 18 and has pitched more than five innings just once - during a six-inning performance against Oakland for his lone win on Aug. 28. Heaney is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two career starts against the Mariners, with the win occurring at Safeco Field when he gave up five hits in seven scoreless frames on July 12, 2015.

Albers was sharp in his last turn as he defeated Oakland while allowing one run and one hit (a homer) in six innings. The 31-year-old journeyman received an opportunity with James Paxton and Felix Hernandez both on the disabled list and another strong outing could help him remain in the rotation when the duo returns. Albers has walked just one batter in three of his four starts for Seattle.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels CF Mike Trout recorded a double on Friday for his lone hit in 13 at-bats over his last four games and has yet to homer or drive in a run this month.

2. Paxton (40 pitches) and Hernandez (35) both pitched simulated games and could return to action next week.

3. Los Angeles INF Jefry Marte (fractured left foot) was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

PREDICTION: Mariners 4, Angels 3
