Sep 10, 2017

Kevin Pillar has run the gamut of emotions during the Toronto Blue Jays' series with the visiting Detroit Tigers at Rogers Centre this weekend, with the low of bouncing into a triple play in the opener eclipsed by the high of recording his third career four-hit performance the following day. Pillar will look to remain on the positive side of things Sunday afternoon as the teams conclude their three-game series.

Pillar is batting .330 while hitting safely in 18 of his last 22 games entering Sunday's clash versus starter Anibal Sanchez, against whom he is 3-for-9 in his career. "I've put in a lot of work, and I've made some adjustments," the 28-year-old Pillar told reporters of his recent success. “You just kind of go back to basics and look for pitches to handle and try not to do too much, just go up there and be aggressive. ... Now I go up there with an idea and I'm looking in the zone." While Detroit is down in the dumps with losses in seven of its last nine after Saturday's 5-4 setback, Nicholas Castellanos has been swinging a hot bat by going 9-for-24 during his six-game hitting streak. The 25-year-old is 5-for-11 in his career versus Sunday starter J.A. Happ.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, TVA Sports, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (3-3, 7.07 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (7-10, 3.85)

Sanchez departed after pitching to one batter versus Kansas City on Tuesday, as he found himself on the receiving end of a line drive off his right calf. The 33-year-old Venezuelan will look to shake off that outing and record his first win since Aug. 1 when he faces Toronto, against which he walked away with a no-decision on July 16 despite yielding three homers and five runs total in six innings. Sanchez has kept Justin Smoak (2-for-16) and Miguel Montero (3-for-24) under wraps, but is 0-2 with a 7.98 ERA in three career starts at Rogers Centre.

Happ ended a three-game winless skid by allowing just one earned run over 5 2/3 innings of a 10-4 victory at Boston on Monday. "I thought J.A. was good," acting Blue Jays manager DeMarlo Hale said of the 34-year-old's performance. "He was around the zone, mixed his pitches well. I thought he threw the ball very well." Happ owns a 2-1 mark with a 4.10 ERA in seven career games against Detroit.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto 3B Josh Donaldson (illness) is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday after missing the first two contests of the series.

2. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera launched a two-run shot on Saturday for his 461st homer, tying him with Adrian Beltre for 37th on the career list.

3. Blue Jays RHP Carlos Ramirez pitched a perfect seventh on Saturday to extend his streak to 44 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run this season at Double-A, Triple-A and in the majors.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 4, Tigers 2

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (61-82) at New York Mets (63-79)

Preview: Reds at Mets
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The New York Mets are trying to find some positives in the last month of the season and introducing young players to larger roles. The Mets will look to those youngsters to lead them to a series sweep when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.

New York outscored the Reds 18-4 in the first three games of the series and watched youngsters Kevin Plawecki (26), Dominic Smith (22) and Matt Reynolds (26) combine to go 4-for-10 with three runs scored and three RBIs in Saturday's 6-1 triumph. "We've gotten some big hits from some young guys, and that's impressive to see," Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters. "Even though we sit where we sit as far as records go, some of these guys are playing for something. And I think that means something this time of year. They know that all eyes are on them." The Reds are losers of five straight on the road and scored a total of five runs in those games. They will try to put some better swings together when they go up against Mets ace Jacob deGrom, who starts opposite Cincinnati right-hander Sal Romano on Sunday.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Sal Romano (4-6, 4.62 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (14-9, 3.65)

Romano has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts but is coming off a loss at Pittsburgh last Sunday. The 23-year-old was reached for two runs - one earned - and four hits in 5 2/3 innings but walked four and struck out just two without getting any support from his offense. Romano had no trouble getting support against the Mets on Aug. 29, when he allowed three runs in six innings and earned the win behind an offense that pounded out 14 runs.

The 29-year-old DeGrom was shelled for nine runs - six earned - on 10 hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings against Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Florida native has absorbed the loss in four of his last five starts and yielded at least five earned runs in three of the four losses. He was better at Cincinnati on Aug. 31 but still suffered the loss while yielding four runs - three earned - on six hits and three walks in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets rookie SS Amed Rosario (finger) is expected to return to the lineup for the first time since last Sunday after appearing as a pinch runner in Saturday's victory.

2. Cincinnati 2B Scooter Gennett is 17-for-36 over his last 10 games to raise his batting average to .302.

3. New York RHP Noah Syndergaard (lat) will throw a 50-pitch simulated game on Sunday.

PREDICTION: Reds 4, Mets 3

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (54-88) at Washington Nationals (87-55)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 10 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Phillies at Nationals
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

Despite sporting the worst record in the majors, the Philadelphia Phillies have refused to make life easy for the Washington Nationals just about every time they have met this season. Even so, the host Nationals could become the first team in the majors to guarantee themselves a postseason berth if things break their way Sunday, when they meet the Phillies for the finale of their four-game series.

Odubel Herrera went 0-for-4 to end the longest hitting streak in the majors this season, but Rhys Hoskins hit his 14th homer in his first 30 career games as Philadelphia (54-88) edged the Nationals 5-4 on Saturday. The Phillies improved to 6-9 against Washington in the season series and have played the National League East leaders within one run nine times - including each of the last five meetings - and within two on four other occasions. Washington lost for the first time in six contests but still maintained its 19-game lead over Miami in the division and managed to reduce its magic number for clinching the East to two with 20 games to play, however, as the Marlins fell in Atlanta. Michael Taylor continued to swing a hot bat for the Nationals by going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs in the loss and is 9-for-15 with three blasts, nine RBIs and five runs scored over his last four contests.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Ben Lively (3-5, 3.92 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (12-4, 2.78)

Lively homered and finished with four RBIs to give himself more than enough run support in Tuesday's 9-1 rout of the New York Mets, complementing his hitting with seven innings of one-run ball for his second straight victory. The 25-year-old rookie has yielded two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six turns in part due to his ability to keep the ball inside the park in those outings. Lively is 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA in seven road starts as he faces the Nationals for the first time.

Strasburg blanked the Marlins over six frames in a win Tuesday at Miami, allowing six hits and fanning eight to run his consecutive-inning scoreless streak to a club-record 26 frames. The three-time All-Star boasts a 44:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 36 innings since the Midsummer Classic, going 3-1 with a 0.75 ERA in six outings over that span. Strasburg is 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA in three starts versus the Phillies in 2017 and 9-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 20 career turns against Philadelphia.

WALK-OFFS

1. A win by the Nationals and a loss by the Marlins on Sunday in Atlanta will clinch at least a share of a second straight division title for Washington.

2. Philadelphia 2B Cesar Hernandez went 3-for-6 on Saturday to extend his on-base streak to 20 games.

3. Washington manager Dusty Baker announced OF Jayson Werth would not return to the lineup until at least Tuesday due to a shoulder injury.

PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Phillies 1

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (70-73) at Boston Red Sox (81-61)

Preview: Rays at Red Sox
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The Boston Red Sox are on another hot streak with the bats and continue to draw closer to another American League East title. The Red Sox will try to shave another game off their magic number and complete a three-game sweep when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the finale on Sunday.

Boston put its AL East supremacy in danger with a stretch of eight losses in 12 games that featured some inconsistent offense, but the Red Sox increased their current winning streak to four in a row with a 9-0 win over the Rays on Saturday - their second straight nine-run explosion. The surge is being led by rookie outfielder Andrew Benintendi, who is 4-for-10 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the last two games after going 0-for-18 in the previous four contests. Saturday's win left the Red Sox 4 1/2 games ahead of the rival New York Yankees in the East while the Rays remained 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota in a crowded race for the second AL wild-card. Tampa Bay, which dropped its last three games while surrendering a total of 28 runs, will try to stop the bleeding by sending Alex Cobb to the mound on Sunday opposite Boston right-hander Rick Porcello.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Cobb (10-9, 3.64 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (9-16, 4.67)

Cobb has been solid in his first three starts since off the disabled list, allowing a total of four runs and 14 hits in 16 innings while striking out 18. The 29-year-old earned his first win since July 26 by holding the Twins to one run and three hits in 5 2/3 frames on Monday. Cobb won at Boston on May 12 and dominated the Red Sox at home on July 8, scattering two hits over 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

Porcello is trying to bounce back after getting pounded for seven runs and 10 hits - three homers - over 5 1/3 innings against Toronto on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has struggled with the long ball all season and is tied for the major-league lead with 35 home runs allowed. Porcello surrendered a pair of solo shots at Tampa Bay on Aug. 9 but limited the damage to those two runs over six innings to earn a win.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox INF Eduardo Nunez left Saturday's game with a bruised knee after a hard slide and is doubtful for Sunday.

2. Tampa Bay RF Steven Souza Jr. sat out Saturday with a bruised left knee and is day-to-day.

3. Boston rookie 3B Rafael Devers is 7-for-12 with four runs scored in the last three games.

PREDICTION: Rays 6, Red Sox 3

Preview: Giants at White Sox
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The Chicago White Sox are in last place in the American League Central but are still working to change that in the last month of the season, led by slugger Jose Abreu. The White Sox will try to ride Abreu's hot bat to a series win when they host the San Francisco Giants in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series on Sunday.

Abreu hit for the cycle on Saturday - the franchise's first since 2000 - to snap Chicago out of a five-game slide with a 13-1 triumph, finishing with a triple after fouling a ball off his shin. "I hit the ball to the alley and I was just thinking of the triple," Abreu told reporters. "(White Sox manager Rick Renteria) believed in me when I hit the foul ball (off my shin). He said, 'Hey, are you OK?' I said, 'Yes.' He believed in me in that moment and allowed me to get my at-bat and I was able to get that triple." The Giants take up the bottom spot of the National League West and are losers of 11 of their last 15 games. San Francisco will try to snap out of the funk on Sunday behind ace Madison Bumgarner, while the White Sox turn to rookie right-hander Carson Fulmer.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area-San Francisco, CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (3-7, 3.15 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Carson Fulmer (1-1, 10.50)

Bumgarner has lost each of his last two starts and was knocked around for five runs and five hits in six innings against St. Louis last Sunday. Nevertheless, the North Carolina native has logged at least six innings in each of his last seven starts. Bumgarner is seeing Chicago for the first time in his career and is 9-8 with a 3.42 ERA in 22 career interleague starts.

Fulmer is making his fourth major-league appearance and second start after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against Cleveland on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Vanderbilt product was ripped for six runs on four hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings in his first major-league start on Aug. 21 against Minnesota. Fulmer was just 7-9 with a 5.79 ERA in 25 starts at Triple-A Charlotte this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval snapped a 0-for-39 drought with a homer on Friday but went 0-for-3 on Saturday to drop his batting average to .185 since joining the team.

2. Chicago SS Tim Anderson has recorded multiple hits in four of his last five games.

3. San Francisco is moving LHP Ty Blach to the bullpen.

Anderson, who recorded his first career RBI and multi-hit performance in Thursday’s series opener, went 2-for-4 and drove in a run Saturday as the Marlins fell for the 11th time in 13 contests.

Giancarlo Stanton continues adding to his major league-leading home run total, belting his 54th of the season on Saturday - a 456-foot shot in the first inning - to give him 19 in his last 30 games. But it was not enough to keep Miami from falling behind in the series as Atlanta's Ender Inciarte, who collected two hits to give him 184 on the season, drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to force in the winning run. Johan Camargo, who finished with two hits and three RBIs, is 4-for-10 with three RBIs in three games since returning from the disabled list Thursday. Freddie Freeman finished with two hits for the Braves, marking the sixth time in eight contests he has recorded a multi-hit performance.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Odrisamer Despaigne (0-3, 3.57 ERA) vs. Braves RH R.A. Dickey (9-9, 4.14)

Despaigne makes his fifth start of the season and fourth since rejoining Miami’s rotation on Aug. 26. He pitched well in his last start on Tuesday against Washington, allowing only one run and five hits in seven innings but took the hard-luck loss. The 30-year-old, who has not won a major-league game since 2015, has posted a 2.65 ERA and .213 opponents’ batting average in his past three starts.

Dickey looks to rebound after allowing six runs – the most he has surrendered in a start since mid-June – in an 8-2 loss to Texas on Monday. The 42-year-old makes his 28th start of the season and has struck out nine hitters in two of his last four outings. Dickey has faced the Marlins twice in 2017, going 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA and beating Miami at home on Aug. 4.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins CF Christian Yelich went 2-for-4 Saturday and is hitting 5-for-11 in the series.

2. Atlanta’s bullpen, which entered Saturday with a 5.08 ERA in September, allowed just one run and three hits over 5 1/3 innings.

3. Miami 2B Dee Gordon pushed his hitting streak to a career high-tying 13 games.

PREDICTION: Marlins 4, Braves 1

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (67-76) at St. Louis Cardinals (74-68)

WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Pirates at Cardinals
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

After playing .500 ball for the better part of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals appear to be hitting their stride just in time to make a push for the postseason and perhaps an unlikely run for the National League Central crown. Winners of eight of their last 10, the Cardinals look to complete a three-game sweep at home on Sunday, when they host the fading Pittsburgh Pirates.

St. Louis moved within three games of the division-leading Chicago Cubs with its sixth victory in seven games following Saturday's 4-3 triumph, as Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter homered while rookie Paul DeJong doubled and eventually scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. In addition to inching closer to the Cubs, the Cardinals remained three games behind Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the NL. The Pirates matched their offensive output from the last three games combined and held St. Louis to four hits, but it was not quite enough as they fell for a fourth consecutive time. Adam Frazier has been a rare bright spot for Pittsburgh since coming off the disabled list prior to the series opener, delivering a pinch-hit RBI single in Friday's setback before going 2-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer on Saturday.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, AT&T Sportsnet-Pittsburgh, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (11-12, 4.11 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (11-7, 4.21)

Nova enters Sunday on 10 days' rest after he was skipped in the rotation in order to clear his head after struggling in most of his nine starts since the All-Star break, posting a 2-6 record with a 6.38 ERA and 1.69 WHIP. The 30-year-old Dominican suffered his sixth loss in seven decisions against the Cubs on Aug. 30, surrendering five runs - four earned - over three frames. One of Nova's best starts during his poor stretch came in an Aug. 20 victory against the Cardinals as he allowed three runs across 5 2/3 innings.

Wacha recorded his second straight win Tuesday in San Diego following a three-start losing streak despite yielding four runs - three earned - on seven hits and three walks in six frames. The Texas A&M product has been significantly better at home this season, going 7-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 14 turns (versus 4-4, 5.10 in 12 road outings). Andrew McCutchen is 12-for-31 with a homer against Wacha, who has given up six runs - including three homers - across 10 2/3 innings while splitting a pair of decisions versus Pittsburgh this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals OF Dexter Fowler left the game Saturday after suffering a left knee contusion on Frazier's inside-the-park homer in the seventh inning.

2. Frazier's inside-the-parker was the first in Busch Stadium since Edwin Encarnacion hit one for Cincinnati on Aug. 31, 2007.

3. St. Louis OF Tommy Pham, who has struck out four times in six at-bats in this series, is one home run and one steal away from becoming the first Cardinal to post a 20-20 season since 2004.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Pirates 2

Preview: Twins at Royals
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The wheels have come off for Kansas City Royals left-hander Jason Vargas, who earned an All-Star berth with a sensational first half, only to unravel during the stretch run. Vargas will be looking to snap a four-start losing streak when the Royals go for a split of their four-game series against the visiting Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

On the verge of falling 5 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild card, Kansas City may have saved its season by rallying for a 5-2 victory on Saturday in what manager Ned Yost termed "a game we had to have." Alex Gordon hit a tying homer in the seventh inning - his first blast since July 3 - and the Royals added three runs in the eighth to draw within 3 1/2 games of the Twins. Although its three-game winning streak was snapped, Minnesota came away with some positives - it maintained its two-game edge over the Los Angeles Angels in the wild-card chase and Byron Buxton ended an 0-for-18 swoon with a homer among two hits. The ageless Bartolo Colon, plucked off the scrap heap by the Twins in July, takes a 15-10 career record against Kansas City into Sunday's start - his third-highest win total against any opponent.

TV: 2:15 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Bartolo Colón (6-11, 6.06 ERA) vs. Royals LH Jason Vargas (14-10, 4.23)

Colon has been more than serviceable since he was picked up following his release from Atlanta, although he was a hard-luck loser last time out at Tampa Bay after yielding two runs over 6 2/3 innings. It was the third consecutive quality start for the 44-year-old Dominican, who is 4-3 with a 3.94 ERA with the Twins. Melky Cabrera has been a tough matchup for Colon, going 5-for-8 with a double and triple.

Vargas was 12-3 with a 2.22 ERA entering the month of July, but his regression has been startling - he was hammered for seven runs in two innings at Detroit last time out and has been battered for 20 runs over 17 2/3 frames during the four-start skid. He capped a seven-start winning streak on June 30 by allowing one run and two hits over seven innings. Joe Mauer is batting .368 (14-for-38) against Vargas.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals 1B Eric Hosmer, who knocked in the go-ahead run Saturday, is 7-for-10 in the series.

2. Twins 3B Eduardo Escobar has homered in consecutive games and is 12-for-32 with nine extra-base hits in his last eight.

3. Royals CF Lorenzo Cain has recorded three three-hit performances in his last seven contests, with two coming against Minnesota.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Royals 5

Sep 9, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers already have exceeded last year’s win total, and they’ve blown away expectations. Now they look to continue closing the gap in the National League Central when they play the finale of a three-game road series against the division-leading Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

The Brewers have refused to fade from the NL Central race, and they pulled within three games of the Cubs with a 15-2 rout Saturday after winning 2-0 in Friday’s series opener. After Sunday’s finale, the rivals meet for four more games in Milwaukee from Sept. 21-24. "Every game now in September is magnified,” Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward told reporters. “That's what you want. That's what you play for.” The Cubs have lost three straight home games for the first time since Aug. 2-4 and have dropped five of their last seven overall.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), ABC 7 (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (16-8, 3.77 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (6-4, 3.29)

Davies has posted a 1.11 ERA over his last five starts, allowing two or fewer runs in each outing. The 24-year-old has posted quality starts in eight of his last 10 outings. Davies is 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts against the Cubs, and he has lost two of three meetings this season.

Hendricks is 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in nine starts since coming off the disabled list on July 24. The 27-year-old has recorded five straight quality starts after allowing two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision at Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Hendricks is 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 13 starts against the Brewers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 3B Kris Bryant, who has reached base in 34 consecutive starts, is 9-for-22 with two doubles, a triple, and a homer against Davies.

2. Brewers 3B Hernan Perez homered and drove in five runs Saturday, but he is 2-for-13 against Hendricks.

3. The season series is tied 7-7, but the Brewers have outscored the Cubs 74-65.

GAME: New York Yankees (76-65) at Texas Rangers (71-70)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 10 - 3:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Yankees at Rangers
Gracenote
Sep 9, 2017

Chase Headley and Jacoby Ellsbury have provided consistent dividends at the plate of late as the New York Yankees keep within striking distance in the American League East while strengthening their spot atop the wild-card picture. Headley and Ellsbury look to extend their respective eight-game hitting streaks on Sunday when the visiting Yankees and Texas Rangers play the rubber match of their three-game series.

Headley drove in two runs during Saturday's 3-1 win, improving to 12-for-30 with three homers, six RBIs and seven runs scored during his season-high hitting streak. Ellsbury has driven in five runs and scored as many during his hitting streak heading into Sunday's tilt versus starter A.J. Griffin, against whom he is just 1-for-14 in his career. While New York has won five of seven to move within 4 1/2 games of AL East-leading Boston, Texas fell for just the fourth time in 11 outings to reside 2 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot. Brett Nicholas, who has hit safely in four straight and eight of his last nine games spread over a month, had an RBI double in the fifth inning to account for the Rangers' lone hit on Saturday.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (7-7, 4.14 ERA) vs. Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (6-5, 5.09)

Mired in a six-game winless stretch, Montgomery owns an 0-2 mark and 5.06 ERA in that span after surrendering two homers in 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Baltimore on Monday. The 24-year-old rookie has struggled to work deep into games as he hasn't pitched more than 5 1/3 frames in a start since defeating Cincinnati on July 25. "I would love to get six innings out of him," New York manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "Again, he hasn't been stretched out as much lately just because we've been trying to conserve a little bit. We'll go inning by inning with him."

Griffin has enjoyed a sterling stretch in his career versus New York, posting a 3-0 mark with a 2.37 ERA in five career outings. "I just try and go out there and pitch," said the 29-year-old, who spun eight sterling innings against the Yankees at home on April 26, 2016. "They have a pretty different team than the last time I faced them. I just go out there and try to get everyone out like I always do." Griffin hasn't been as fortunate of late, posting a 2-3 record with a 4.20 ERA in five starts since his return from the disabled list.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York C Gary Sanchez is 7-for-17 with four RBIs in his last four games.

2. Texas C Robinson Chirinos has reached base safely in 23 straight starts.

3. The Rangers are just 12-19 versus AL East foes while the Yankees are 13-19 against AL West representatives.

PREDICTION: Rangers 5, Yankees 3

GAME: Houston Astros (86-56) at Oakland Athletics (62-80)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 10 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Astros at Athletics
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The Houston Astros have had no answers for the host Oakland Athletics thus far this weekend, allowing a total of 31 runs in losing the first three contests of their four-game series. American League West-leading Houston turns to ace Dallas Keuchel on Sunday as it attempts to salvage the finale and maintain the best record in the junior circuit.

The Astros entered the series with a seven-game winning streak after sweeping three in Seattle to begin their 10-game road trip but dropped a 9-8 decision in the opener on Friday before allowing 11 runs in each game of Saturday's doubleheader while scoring only five in the sweep. Jose Altuve went 2-for-8 in the twinbill to see his major league-leading average drop to .350 but has homered twice in the series for Houston, which shares the best record in the AL (86-56) with Cleveland thanks to the Central Division leader's 17-game winning streak. Boog Powell and Chad Pinder, the first two batters in Oakland's lineup, combined to go 4-for-9 with seven RBIs in the second game on Saturday as the club posted its fourth straight win. Pinder went deep in both the seventh and eighth inning for his third career two-homer performance and has recorded at least one RBI in four consecutive contests.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (12-3, 2.88 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (4-4, 4.70)

Keuchel bounced back from a rough outing against Texas on Monday, when he allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings in a victory at Seattle. The 29-year-old native of Oklahoma has given up fewer than three earned runs in four of his last five turns after yielding three or more in straight outings. Keuchel is 5-3 with a 2.39 ERA in 17 career appearances (15 starts) versus the Athletics, winning all three of his starts against them this year while permitting a total of two runs over 21 2/3 frames.

Graveman is riding a three-start unbeaten streak despite struggling in each of his last two outings - both no-decisions. The 26-year-old from Alabama yielded four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings against the Angels at home on Tuesday after surrendering five runs on six hits - three homers - and three free passes over five frames at Los Angeles on Aug. 30. Graveman is 3-3 with a 3.99 ERA in eight career starts against Houston but 0-1 in two turns this year, even though he allowed a total of three runs in 11 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros C Juan Centeno exited the first game of Saturday's doubleheader after being hit in the mask with the follow-through of a swing and is expected to miss "a little bit of time", according to MGR A.J. Hinch.

2. Oakland OF Khris Davis is one RBI shy of the career high of 102 he set last season as he became the first Athletic with back-to-back 100-RBI campaigns since Miguel Tejada (2000-03) and Eric Chavez (2001-03).

3. Houston C Evan Gattis (wrist) was activated from the disabled list and is expected to be the designated hitter on Sunday.

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Athletics 2

Preview: Angels at Mariners
Gracenote
Sep 10, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels are hoping not to let the second wild-card spot in the American League slip out of their sights. The Angels look to remain within striking distance of Minnesota for the second wild card when they attempt to avoid being swept of their three-game series against the host Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Los Angeles briefly overtook the Twins for the wild-card berth within the last week but has fallen two games back thanks to a three-game losing streak. After being edged 4-3 in the series opener, the Angels were trounced 8-1 on Saturday as they finally got on the board with two outs in the ninth inning. Seattle also is in the running for the second wild card as it sits three games behind Minnesota. The Mariners look to continue their trend of sweeping and being swept in series on Sunday before traveling to the Lone Star State for seven games against Texas (four) and Houston.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Parker Bridwell (7-2, 4.00 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Erasmo Ramirez (5-5, 4.35)

Bridwell will be happy to see a team other than Oakland, as he was tagged for 13 runs and 13 hits over six innings in his last two outings - both against the Athletics. The 26-year-old Texan escaped with no-decisions and is winless in four turns since his last victory, which was a six-inning effort at Seattle on Aug. 13 in which he allowed one run and four hits. Bridwell lost his first career turn against the Mariners on June 30, when he surrendered five runs and 11 hits in six frames.

Ramirez has pitched well over his last five starts but has just one victory to show for his efforts. The 27-year-old Nicaraguan has given up fewer than three runs four times in that span while working six innings in each outing. Ramirez is 4-2 with a 2.19 ERA in 11 career appearances (seven starts) against the Angels, including a 1-0 mark in two turns this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners 2B Robinson Cano has recorded two three-hit performances during his four-game hitting streak and is one home run away from 300 for his career.

2. Los Angeles LHP Andrew Heaney, who recently returned from Tommy John surgery, left Saturday's start in the third inning with soreness in his shoulder.

3. Seattle OF Mitch Haniger has gone 7-for-12 during his three-game hitting streak and has driven in a run in each contest.

PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Angels 3
