GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (51-84) at Miami Marlins (67-68)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Phillies at Marlins
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

The Miami Marlins unleashed plenty of pent-up frustration to put an emphatic end to their season high-tying five-game losing streak, highlighted by Giancarlo Stanton belting his majors-best 52nd homer. Stanton, who ended an 0-for-11 stretch with his 26th homer in 48 contests since the All-Star break, looks to send the host Marlins to a split of their four-game set versus the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon.

The 27-year-old Stanton has registered a staggering eight homers versus Philadelphia this season, including a towering blast against Sunday starter Jake Thompson in Miami's 9-8 victory on Aug. 24. The Marlins rode Stanton's latest homer to a 10-9 victory to move within five games of Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the National League. Philadelphia's postseason aspirations were dashed months ago, but the future looks bright if Rhys Hoskins' current stretch is any indication. The 24-year-old, who ended his own home run "drought" at five contests with a two-run shot on Saturday, has reached base safely in 17 straight games heading into the series finale versus Miami.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jake Thompson (1-1, 5.40 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (12-6, 3.84)

Thompson will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to claim the rotation spot of Jerad Eickhoff, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list with nerve irritation in his right hand. The 23-year-old hasn't fared well in his last two outings with Philadelphia, permitting 12 runs on 16 hits - including five homers - with five walks. Thompson was fortunate to walk way with a no-decision versus Miami on Aug. 24 despite being taken deep twice and surrendering four walks in five innings.

Urena saw his three-game winning streak halted on Monday in Washington after yielding four runs in as many innings of an 11-2 setback. The 25-year-old Dominican allowed three walks in that contest, including two in the first inning as his pitch count soon ballooned to 94 en route to an early exit. Urena overcame two homers and lasted five frames to pick up the win in a 7-4 triumph at Philadelphia on Aug. 22.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami 2B Dee Gordon has collected seven straight multi-hit performances to reside one shy of the franchise record, set back Chris Coghlan in 2009.

2. Philadelphia 1B Tommy Joseph is 5-for-13 with one homer and two RBIs during his last three games.

3. Marlins OF Christian Yelich is 5-for-13 with two run scored in this series.

PREDICTION: Marlins 6, Phillies 2

GAME: Cleveland Indians (79-56) at Detroit Tigers (58-77)

Preview: Indians at Tigers
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

The Cleveland Indians don't seem to want to stop winning. The Indians will attempt to push their season-best winning streak to 11 straight and finish off a four-game sweep when they visit the Detroit Tigers for the series finale on Sunday.

Cleveland's streak is being fueled by its American League-best pitching staff, which is allowing an average of 1.7 runs during the stretch and surrendered two or fewer in eight of the last nine contests. The Indians are eight games clear of the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central and are within three games of the Houston Astros in the race for the best record in the AL. The Tigers signaled their intentions to endure a long rebuilding process by trading away Justin Verlander and Justin Upton this week and are losers of 14 of their last 19 contests. Detroit, which is also missing two of its biggest remaining bats in Miguel Cabrera (suspension) and Victor Martinez (heart), will try to string some hits together on Sunday against Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin while the Tigers counter with lefty Chad Bell.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, STO (Cleveland), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Josh Tomlin (7-9, 5.38) vs. Tigers LH Chad Bell (0-1, 5.48)

Tomlin spent over a month on the disabled list with a hamstring injury but arrives back just in time to help the Indians go to a six-man rotation and get the staff well rested for the postseason. The 32-year-old Texan was sharp in four starts before hitting the DL, earning three straight wins while allowing a total of seven runs in 24 1/3 innings. That stretch began after Tomlin served up four runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 frames at Detroit on July 1.

Bell is making his first career start in place of injured right-hander Michael Fulmer (elbow). Bell last pitched against the New York Yankees on Aug. 23 and logged four innings out of the bullpen while yielding three runs - two earned - and five hits. The 28-year-old, who matched a season high with six strikeouts in that Aug. 23 outing, made three appearances against Cleveland in July and allowed a total of seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Martinez is dealing with an irregular heartbeat and is expected to undergo a surgical procedure to address the issue.

2. Indians CF Bradley Zimmer left Saturday's game after attempting a diving catch and is day-to-day after passing initial concussion tests.

3. Cleveland RHP Danny Salazar (elbow) threw a simulated game at Double-A Akron on Saturday and could to return to the rotation on Tuesday at Chicago.

PREDICTION: Indians 8, Tigers 3

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (63-73) at Baltimore Orioles (69-67)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 1:35 PM EST
WHERE: Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland

Preview: Blue Jays at Orioles
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

The Toronto Blue Jays put themselves in a position to snap a streak of four straight losing series, but it came at a cost. The Blue Jays will try to get some length out of their starter when they visit the Baltimore Orioles for the finale of a four-game set on Sunday.

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman left in the second inning on Saturday after being hit in the elbow with a line drive, forcing four relievers to cover 7 1/3 frames. The Blue Jays are benefitting from the expanded rosters in September and have 15 pitchers on staff to cover the innings and try to keep the Orioles in the park. Baltimore came into the series riding a seven-game winning streak and moving up in the standings but now sits 2 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the race for the second wild card spot. The Orioles averaged 6.03 runs in August but totaled three in the first two games of September and will try to get the bats going against Blue Jays left-hander Brett Anderson while supporting righty Chris Tillman.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, TVA Sports (Toronto), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Brett Anderson (2-3, 6.83 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Chris Tillman (1-7, 7.91)

Anderson made his Toronto debut on Tuesday against Boston and was a tough-luck loser while allowing one run and six hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old Texan began the season with the Chicago Cubs before being waived and signed to a minor-league deal by Toronto. Anderson is seeing Baltimore for the first time since 2010 and is hoping to go deeper into the game after being limited to 85 pitches on Tuesday.

Tillman is still looking for his first win since May 7 and was rocked for six runs across 5 1/3 innings by the Seattle Mariners on Monday. The California native is struggling with his control in the last two starts - issuing 10 walks in 10 2/3 frames - and surrendered a pair of home runs in each outing. Tillman kept the ball in the yard and turned in a quality start against the Blue Jays on May 19, but did not factor in the decision while allowing three runs in six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles CF Adam Jones hit safely in nine of the last 10 games, with the exception coming when he was ejected in the first inning on Friday for arguing balls and strikes.

2. Stroman had x-rays come back negative and is day-to-day.

3. Toronto 1B Justin Smoak (calf) returned to the starting lineup Saturday following a three-game absence and went 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

Sep 3, 2017

The Pittsburgh Pirates look to put together back-to-back strong pitching performances when they send Trevor Williams to the mound Sunday against the visiting Cincinnati Reds in the rubber match of the three-game series between the National League Central rivals. Four pitchers scattered five hits in a 5-0 victory on Saturday and rookie Jordan Luplow belted a three-run shot for his first major-league homer as Pittsburgh snapped its four-game losing streak.

The Pirates are just 5-10 in the season series but will record their second series victory over the Reds in 10 days if Williams can come up with a performance similar to his last two when he faces promising rookie Sal Romano on Sunday. Luplow was 0-for-12 in his career before going 2-for-4 in Saturday’s contest while Starling Marte snapped out of a 1-for-12 slump with three hits and an RBI for Pittsburgh. Last-place Cincinnati, which reportedly will pick up the 2018 option on manager Bryan Price, has won six of the eight meetings at PNC Park this year and captured the series opener 7-3 on Friday. Scooter Gennett is 7-for-12 with three extra-base hits and four RBIs over his last three games and Billy Hamilton has recorded seven hits in 20 at-bats and stolen four bases in his last five contests for the Reds.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Sal Romano (4-5, 4.91 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Trevor Williams (5-7, 4.37)

Romano has strung together three straight quality starts for the first time in his career, allowing a total of six runs in 20 innings. The 23-year-old New Yorker held the Chicago Cubs to two runs over seven frames in a no-decision on Aug. 24 before beating the New York Mets five days later with six innings of three-run ball. Romano took the loss at Pittsburgh on Aug. 3, when he permitted four runs and eight hits over six frames in his first career outing against the Pirates.

Williams is winless in his last four games despite pitching well in the last two, including a loss to the Cubs on Monday in which he gave up two runs over five innings at Chicago. The 25-year-old Arizona State product registered the best start of his career in the previous outing but came away with a no-decision after limiting the Los Angeles Dodgers to seven hits over eight scoreless frames. Gennett is 2-for-5 with a homer versus Williams, who has posted a 5.79 ERA without recording a decision in three appearances (one start) against the Reds this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto has recorded 337 career doubles and needs two to tie Tony Perez for sixth place on the franchise list.

2. Pittsburgh 1B David Freese is 4-for-7 with two runs scored in the series and is batting .394 against the Reds this season.

3. Pirates INF Josh Harrison left Saturday’s game with an injury to his left hand and will be evaluated before the series finale.

PREDICTION: Reds 6, Pirates 5

GAME: New York Mets (58-77) at Houston Astros (82-53)

WHERE: Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas

Preview: Mets at Astros
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

The Houston Astros are trying to provide a diversion in the wake of the catastrophic events of the past week in their hurricane-ravaged city. During Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the visiting New York Mets, the Astros got a glimpse into what they can offer to the fans, feelings they hope continue when the three-game series wraps up Sunday afternoon.

"The fact that they came out today to support us, it's crazy," Houston right fielder George Springer said Saturday between the two games that drew more than 65,000 fans. "There's thousands of people that don't have homes, they don't have belongings and they're rallying around us. It's our job as the sports team here to do anything we can. The goal is to provide anybody with some sense of relief." The Astros will get a pick-me-up of their own on the field with star shortstop Carlos Correa expected to return to the lineup Sunday after missing 42 games with a torn ligament in his left thumb. New York has lost three straight and is 1-4 on the six-game road trip, and Saturday's dual losses provided another reminder of how the season that has unraveled due to a string of injuries. Third baseman Wilmer Flores clubbed a grand slam in the opener of the doubleheader, but had to exit the nightcap bloodied when he fouled off a ball directly into his face, breaking his nose.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Chris Flexen (3-3, 6.89 ERA) vs. Astros RH Mike Fiers (8-9, 4.55)

Making his seventh major league start, Flexen was tagged for a career-worst seven runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss at Cincinnati on Tuesday. Although he earned the win with six innings of two-run ball versus Arizona in his previous turn, Flexen has been issuing walks at an alarming rate. The 23-year-old has allowed four walks in four straight outings, 16 total against 15 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Fiers also was hit hard in his last outing, giving up eight runs and eight hits over four innings in a loss to Texas to drop to 1-5 over his last seven starts. He limited Washington to one run over seven innings in his previous turn, but will be happy to turn the calendar after posting a bloated 7.44 ERA in six starts in August. Fiers has surrendered a career-high 31 homers, six of them coming during last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros 2B Jose Altuve, who leads the majors with a .358 batting averge, is riding a six-game hitting streak.

2. The Mets agreed to a contract with OF Nori Aoki, who is 6-for-14 against Fiers.

3. Springer was 5-for-8 with a homer and two RBIs in Saturday's doubleheader.

PREDICTION: Astros 8, Mets 3

GAME: Kansas City Royals (66-68) at Minnesota Twins (71-64)

WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Preview: Royals at Twins
The Sports Xchange
Sep 3, 2017

The Minnesota Twins have been one of baseball's best teams over the past month and right-hander Ervin Santana has been instrumental in the success. Santana went 3-0 during six starts in August and looks to extend his unbeaten string when the surging Twins host the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Minnesota bounced back from a series-opening loss with a vengeance, hammering the Royals 17-0 to win for the fifth time in six games and remain one game behind the wild card-leading New York Yankees. Eduardo Escobar homered twice and drove in six runs, matching his RBI total from the previous 14 games as the Twins improved to 19-8 over the past four weeks. Kansas City is careening in the opposite direction, losing seven of its last nine games to drop 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild card. Both the pitching and offense have been culprits for the Royals, who have been outscored 65-18 and shut out five times during the 2-7 slide.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-10, 5.47 ERA) vs. Twins RH Ervin Santana (14-7, 3.27)

Kennedy was among the major contributors to Kansas City's 10-18 record in August, posting an 0-4 record with a wretched 9.57 ERA in six starts last month. He has provided neither quality or quantity of late, tossing a combined 10 innings over his last three starts while yielding 15 runs and 19 hits, including six homers. Escobar is 7-for-17 against Kennedy, who is 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA in three starts versus the Twins this year.

Santana extended his unbeaten streak to seven starts by earning the win last time out against the Chicago White Sox, giving up three runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. He has fared markedly better away from home, with a road ERA (2.48) 1 1/2 runs lower than at Target Field (4.04). Eric Hosmer is 9-for-29 with four homers and 14 RBIs against Santana, who has split two decisions versus the Royals this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins 1B Joe Mauer went 4-for-4 Saturday and has hit safely in 11 straight games and 16 of 17.

2. Royals closer Kelvin Herrera is expected to miss a few days with a forearm strain.

3. Twins SS Jorge Polanco is riding an eight-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Royals 4

GAME: Washington Nationals (82-53) at Milwaukee Brewers (71-65)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Nationals at Brewers
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

Trea Turner appears to have hit the ground running since returning from a two-month absence on the disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his right wrist. The 24-year-old drove in the eventual winning run on Saturday and looks to aid the Washington Nationals in salvaging a split of their four-game series versus the host Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.

Turner is 4-for-11 with three extra-base hits and two runs scored in the series for Washington, which has won five of seven to trim its magic number to capture the National League East title to 13. While Washington's postseason ticket is all but punched, Milwaukee saw its three-game winning streak halted to fall 4 1/2 games behind red-hot Chicago in the NL Central and 1 1/2 in back of Colorado for the second wild-card spot. Jonathan Villar is riding quite the sizzling stretch by going 10-for-18 with five RBIs during his five-game hitting streak for the Brewers. The 26-year-old Dominican is 7-for-20 with three extra-base hits (two doubles, home run) versus the Nationals this season and 1-for-4 with a double in a small sample size in his career against Sunday starter Edwin Jackson.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MASN, WUSA 9 (Washington), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Edwin Jackson (5-3, 3.33 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Brent Suter (2-2, 3.79)

Jackson has won three of his last four starts and improved to 5-3 since being acquired from Baltimore after allowing two earned runs over six innings for the second straight outing in Tuesday's 8-3 triumph versus Miami. The 33-year-old struggled mightily in his last encounter with Milwaukee, surrendering three homers and seven runs total over five frames of an 8-0 setback on July 25. Ryan Braun is batting a .333 with six extra-base hits (five doubles, one homer) versus Jackson, who has limited Neil Walker to just a 5-for-22 showing at the plate.

Suter is expected to be a on limited pitch count in his first start since returning from the 10-day disabled list due to a left rotator cuff strain. The 28-year-old pitched well in Wednesday's rehab stint with Class-A Wisconsin, working three innings and tossing 34 pitches. Suter was shuffled into the starting rotation when Chase Anderson strained an oblique and posted a 2-1 mark with a 3.65 ERA in eight trips to the mound.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee C Stephen Vogt is riding a six-game hitting streak into Sunday's tilt versus Washington, against which he is 9-for-22 this season.

2. Nationals OF Jayson Werth is 0-for-11 with four strikeouts in this series.

3. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman owns a six-game hitting streak overall and is 7-for-23 versus Milwaukee this season.

PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Brewers 3

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (68-69) at Chicago White Sox (53-81)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 2:10 PM EST
WHERE: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Rays at White Sox
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

All-Star Avisail Garcia looks to extend his hitting streak to 11 contests and continue his breakout season when the Chicago White Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays for the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday. Garcia, who went 3-for-4 with his career-high 14th homer in Saturday’s 5-4 victory, has collected 16 hits in 36 at-bats during his hitting streak and gone deep three times in five meetings with the Rays this year.

Chicago owns the worst record in the American League but can win its third straight home series with a victory on Sunday as it sends former first-round pick Lucas Giolito to the mound against Tampa Bay’s Matt Andriese. The Rays, who can win their fourth straight set, stranded nine baserunners and managed just one run in the ninth inning Saturday despite loading the bases with none out. Logan Morrison belted his sixth homer in six contests and extended his hitting streak to seven games for Tampa Bay, which fell four behind Minnesota for the AL’s second wild card. The Rays hope for more production from Evan Longoria, who hit into a double play in the ninth on Saturday and is 3-for-23 over his last six contests.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Matt Andriese (5-1, 3.38 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Lucas Giolito (1-1, 2.77)

Andriese returns to the rotation for the first time since June 10, when he suffered a hip injury that kept him out for approximately 2 months. The 28-year-old Californian came back on Monday in a relief role as he pitched three scoreless innings at Kansas City, allowing one hit and one walk without registering a strikeout. Andriese beat Chicago in their only meeting when he yielded two unearned runs and six hits over 5 2/3 frames in 2015.

Giolito makes his third start for the White Sox after recording his first major-league victory last time out as he spun seven scoreless innings against Detroit while permitting three hits and three walks. The 23-year-old, who also hails from the Golden State, gave up four runs and six hits over six frames versus Minnesota to lose his first start of 2017. Giolito, who will be facing the Rays for the first time, went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA for Washington in 2016 before being acquired in the deal involving Adam Eaton.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier is 11-for-23 during his six-game hitting streak, with five of the hits coming in this series.

2. Chicago placed Leury Garcia (thumb) on the disabled list and recalled fellow OF Rymer Liriano from Triple-A Charlotte.

3. Rays RHP Chris Archer threw only eight pitches before leaving Saturday’s game with right lateral forearm tightness and will be evaluated when the team returns home.

PREDICTION: Rays 5, White Sox 3

GAME: Atlanta Braves (59-75) at Chicago Cubs (75-60)

Preview: Braves at Cubs
Gracenote
Sep 2, 2017

The Chicago Cubs might be sad to see the Atlanta Braves leave town Sunday afternoon. The Cubs look to complete a sweep of the season series with the Braves when the teams wrap up a four-game series Sunday at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs moved a season-high 15 games above .500 with Saturday’s 14-12 win – their ninth straight home win and their sixth straight overall. The Cubs’ lead in the National League Central sits at 4 1/2 games over Milwaukee, which visits Chicago for three games next weekend. Chicago has won all six meetings with the Braves this season, outscoring Atlanta 39-20. The Braves have lost six of their last eight games.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Max Fried (0-0, 5.40 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (5-6, 3.29)

Fried will make his first start after four relief outings since making his debut on Aug. 8. The 23-year-old pitched three scoreless innings over his first two outings but has allowed four runs in 3 2/3 frames over his last two appearances. Fried has walked six in 6 2/3 innings, so he will need to command his pitches better to give the Braves a strong start.

Montgomery was outstanding in two starts filling in for Jon Lester, earning him another turn in the rotation. The 28-year-old has allowed one run over 13 innings while winning his last two starts and has given up just one run in 17 1/3 innings over his last three outings overall. Montgomery faced the Braves for the first time on June 19 in Atlanta and gave up one run and two hits over six innings to earn the win.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo on Saturday became the fourth player in franchise history with at least three seasons of 30 doubles, 30 home runs, and 100 RBIs, joining Hack Wilson, Billy Williams, and Sammy Sosa.

2. Braves 2B Ozzie Albies has recorded multiple hits in five of his last nine games.

3. Chicago has seven games with at least 14 runs this season, its most since 1931.

PREDICTION: Cubs 6, Braves 3

The Texas Rangers had a golden opportunity to climb within one-half game of the Los Angeles Angels in the American League wild-card race on Saturday but squandered it. Texas looks to avoid falling further behind in the chase when it hosts Los Angeles on Sunday for the rubber match of their three-game series.

The Rangers were one out away from a 4-2 victory in the middle contest of the set, but the Angels rallied to tie it before scoring three runs in the 10th inning to push the host team four games behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot. Los Angeles remained 1 1/2 games back as it registered its fourth win in five contests. C.J. Cron belted a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth and lifted a sacrifice fly a frame later, giving him five RBIs over the first two games of the series. Albert Pujols, who is ranked 10th in RBIs by MLB.com and ninth by the Elias Sports Bureau due to the fact the stat did not become official until 1920, drove in a pair of runs Saturday to raise his career total to 1,906 - with 10 coming in his last three contests.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (1-0, 5.63 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (10-10, 4.89)

Heaney is coming off the best of his three starts this season, a victory over Oakland on Monday in which he allowed one run and two hits while registering a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings. The 26-year-old native of Oklahoma, who underwent Tommy John surgery last year, worked five frames in each of his first two turns in 2017 and escaped with no-decisions after surrendering nine runs and 15 hits - almost half of which were homers (seven). One of those outings was against Texas on Aug. 23, when he yielded four runs and eight hits but remained at 1-1 lifetime versus the club.

Perez won his fifth consecutive start on Tuesday as he gave up two runs and eight hits in seven innings against Houston in St. Petersburg, Fla. The 26-year-old Venezuelan was even better in his previous outing on Aug. 24, when he scattered seven hits over seven scoreless frames in a road victory over the Angels. The triumph evened Perez's season record against Los Angeles at 1-1 and improved his career mark to 3-4 in 11 appearances (10 starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Joey Gallo has gone deep twice in his last five games and shares the AL lead of 37 homers with New York's Aaron Judge and Oakland's Khris Davis.

2. Los Angeles LF Justin Upton has gone 3-for-9 in two games since being acquired from Detroit while 2B Brandon Phillips is just 1-for-10 since being obtained from Atlanta on the same day.

3. Texas RHP Miguel Gonzalez joined the team Saturday, two days after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox, and may start Tuesday at Atlanta.

PREDICTION: Rangers 6, Angels 2

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (78-58) at Colorado Rockies (72-63)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 3:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Diamondbacks at Rockies
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

J.D. Martinez has provided the power-packed punch the Arizona Diamondbacks expected when they acquired the slugger from Detroit in mid-July. Martinez looks to continue his surge as white-hot Arizona aims to extend its season-high winning streak to 10 contests on Sunday in the finale of its three-game series against the host Colorado Rockies.

The 30-year-old belted his fourth homer in seven contests and 14th in 39 games since donning a Diamondbacks jersey in Saturday's 6-2 victory. While Arizona has scored 47 runs in its last six contests to build a 5 1/2-game lead over Colorado for the top wild card in the National League, the Rockies have dropped nine of 13 and sit 1 1/2 ahead of Milwaukee in the race for the second spot. All-Star DJ LeMahieu scored twice and ripped a triple on Saturday to extend his season-high hitting streak to 10 games, a stretch during which he has gone 15-for-40 with three homers. The 29-year-old LeMahieu is 15-for-47 this season against Arizona, although he is 0-for-5 lifetime versus Sunday starter Zack Godley.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, TBS, FSN Arizona, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (6-7, 3.29 ERA) vs. Rockies RH German Marquez (10-5, 4.18)

Godley snapped a three-start losing streak by recording his first win in nearly four weeks on Tuesday after working six innings in a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 27-year-old has served up two homers in three of his last five outings after being taken deep just six times in his previous 15 starts. Godley surrendered a homer in his last turn at Colorado on June 22 but yielded just three runs and four hits while striking out eight in seven innings of a 10-3 triumph.

Marquez will remain on regular rest when he takes the scheduled spot in the rotation of Antonio Senzatela on Sunday. The 22-year-old Venezuelan matched a career high with 10 strikeouts but settled for his second straight no-decision on Tuesday versus Detroit. Arizona is no stranger to Marquez, who owns an 0-1 record despite registering a 3.42 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings while limiting the Diamondbacks to a .227 batting average.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado CF Charlie Blackmon, who saw his nine-game hitting streak come to an end on Saturday, is 19-for-59 versus Arizona this season.

2. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt has gone 0-for-8 in the series after hitting safely in eight of his previous nine games.

3. Rockies LF Ian Desmond is 4-for-18 since returning from a month-long absence due to a calf injury and just 6-for-41 this season versus the Arizona.

PREDICTION: Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 3

The St. Louis Cardinals will try to get their bats going against San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner when he toes the rubber in the finale of a four-game series at home Sunday afternoon. Bumgarner was scratched from the series opener Thursday due to an illness but will now take aim at a St. Louis offense that managed just three hits in Saturday's 2-1 loss in 10 innings.

Dexter Fowler had two of those hits and the lone RBI for the Cardinals, who sit four games behind Colorado for the second wild card in the National League. Bumgarner has posted a 2.78 ERA in nine starts since returning from the disabled list in July and he will be facing St. Louis for the first time since Game 5 of the 2014 NL Championship Series, when he threw eight solid innings to help San Francisco claim the pennant. Nick Hundley's walk-off homer gave the Giants the win Saturday, snapping the club's four-game losing streak and evening the season series at three wins apiece. Promising rookie Luke Weaver gets the nod in the finale for the Cardinals.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Luke Weaver (3-1, 2.48 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (3-6, 2.85)

Weaver has fanned 10 batters in each of his last two outings while allowing two runs over 12 2/3 innings. He has 33 strikeouts against six walks in 24 innings as a starter, limiting opponents to a .228 average. The 24-year-old will be facing the Giants for the first time this year and is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA on the road in 2017.

Bumgarner allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings last time out, but took the loss against Arizona. It marked the 10th time in 13 outings that he posted a quality start, although it was also the fourth time in the lefty's last nine appearances that he surrendered more than one home run. The 28-year-old is 3-4 with a 3.97 ERA in seven career starts against the Cardinals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Fowler has tripled in each of the last two contests after going five games without an extra-base hit.

2. Giants RF Hunter Pence singled in his only at-bat Saturday and is 4-for-9 with three runs scored over his last three games.

3. Cardinals OF Tommy Pham (thumb) has missed two straight games and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Giants 4, Cardinals 3
