The Seattle Mariners have put a five-game losing streak behind them as they attempt to complete a three-game sweep when they host the Oakland Athletics on Sunday for the finale of their series. Seattle has posted two straight one-run victories over Oakland, including a 7-6 triumph on Saturday in which it scored in four of the final five innings to complete a comeback from a 6-2 deficit.

Jean Segura and former Athletic Yonder Alonso hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning, Mike Zunino went deep for the second time in the series in the eighth to forge a tie and Segura gave the Mariners a walk-off win by scoring on a wild pitch. Segura finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, ending his 14-game drought, as Seattle remained 3 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the American League. The Athletics, who swept Texas at home from Aug. 25-27, look to salvage the finale of their six-game road trip. Khris Davis belted his 37th homer of the season Saturday to tie Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Texas' Joey Gallo for the AL lead and climb within five of the career high he set last year.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Daniel Gossett (3-7, 5.21 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Andrew Albers (2-1, 4.20)

Gossett will be making his fourth straight start on the road, where he is 3-4 with a 4.98 ERA. The 24-year-old rookie from South Carolina took the loss against the Angels in Los Angeles on Monday, when he gave up three runs - two earned - and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. Gossett lost his first career visit to Seattle on July 9 as he yielded three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 frames.

Albers won his first two starts after being acquired from Atlanta on Aug. 11 but was victimized by poor defense in his last outing, a road loss to the New York Yankees last Sunday in which he surrendered eight runs and 11 hits over five innings. Only three of the runs were earned, however, as the Mariners committed five errors in a six-run opening frame - marking the first time five miscues were made in an inning since the Chicago Cubs accomplished the dubious feat in 1977. Albers made his only career start versus the Athletics on Sept. 20, 2013, when he also allowed three earned and five unearned runs over 4 2/3 frames of a loss at Oakland while with Minnesota.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners 2B Robinson Cano hit his 20th home run of the year on Saturday, marking the eighth time in his career he has reached the plateau.

2. Oakland OF Matt Joyce, who is 4-for-7 in the series, has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and hasn't gone more than one contest without a hit since July 23 and 24.

3. Seattle purchased the contract of Gordon Beckham from Triple-A Tacoma and designated fellow INF Shawn O'Malley for assignment.

PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Mariners 4

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (92-43) at San Diego Padres (61-75)
DATE/TIME: Sunday, September 03 - 4:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Dodgers at Padres
Gracenote
Sep 3, 2017

Now officially in the worst slump of their record-setting season, the Los Angeles Dodgers look to get untracked Sunday in the finale of their four-game series against the host San Diego Padres. Los Angeles still owns the majors’ best record at 92-43 but dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday and has lost seven of its last eight games.

After Yangervis Solarte belted a walk-off home run to give San Diego a 6-5 victory in Saturday's first game, the Padres jumped on Yu Darvish for five runs over three innings and rolled to a 7-2 win in the nightcap. Shortstop Erick Aybar started in the second game for the first time since coming off the disabled list and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Padres, who swept the Dodgers in a doubleheader for the first time since 1988. Los Angeles had five rookies in the starting lineup in the opener of the twinbill - including Cody Bellinger, who blasted his 35th homer to match the team's rookie record set by Mike Piazza. Dodgers starting pitchers have posted a 7.96 ERA over the last eight games, but manager Dave Roberts is sending Alex Wood and his 14-1 record to the mound for the series finale.

TV: 4:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (14-1, 2.41 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jhoulys Chacin (11-10, 4.03)

Wood is set to make his first start since Aug. 21 after throwing a clean bullpen session on Friday. The 26-year-old native of North Carolina missed one start after landing on the disabled list for the second time this season with an inflamed sternum. Wil Myers is 2-for-10 against Wood, who is 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 10 career games (six starts) against San Diego - including 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two appearances (one start) covering eight innings this season.

Chacin allowed one run and two hits in five innings on Monday against San Francisco but dropped his third straight decision. The 29-year-old has been sharp at Petco Park this season, posting a 7-3 record and 1.85 ERA in 14 starts. Chacin owns a 10-8 record and 4.11 ERA in 24 career games (23 starts) against the Dodgers but has struggled to contain Andre Ethier (14-for-33, home run, 12 walks).

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers SS Corey Seager (elbow) won’t resume throwing until Monday and isn’t expected to return to the lineup until next weekend at the earliest.

2. The Padres are 29-18 at home since May 21.

3. Los Angeles recalled Brock Stewart and purchased the contract of fellow RHP Wilmer Font from Triple-A Oklahoma City, designated RHP Jordan Jankowski for assignment and released OF Brett Eibner.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 4, Padres 2

The New York Yankees need a series win this weekend not only to stay in the race in the American League East, but also to maintain their stranglehold on the top AL wild card spot. All the Yankees need to do is beat Chris Sale when they host the Boston Red Sox in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday.

New York cut its deficit to 4 1/2 games in the East with a 5-1 win on Saturday and got a big boost from slugger Matt Holliday, who came off the disabled list on Friday after sitting out a month with a back injury. The veteran slugged a three-run homer in Saturday's win and could provide the Yankees lineup with some of the thump it's been missing from Aaron Judge, who went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Saturday and is homerless in his last 15 games. The Red Sox are guaranteed to leave New York no worse than 3 1/2 games up in the East but would like to make it more before heading back to Boston for a nine-game homestand beginning Monday. The Yankees will send their best to the mound in Sunday's finale as Luis Severino gets the call against Sale.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Chris Sale (15-6, 2.77 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (11-6, 3.14)

Sale ended a three-start winless streak with a dominating effort at Toronto on Tuesday, when he struck out 11 without walking a batter and scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings. The Cy Young front runner leads the majors with 264 strikeouts and is 10 away from matching his career high, set with the Chicago White Sox in 2015. Sale owns a 2.12 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings against New York this season but is just 0-2 in four outings due to poor run support.

Severino is fourth in the AL with 192 strikeouts and punched out nine over 6 2/3 innings against Cleveland on Monday but could not come away with a win. The Dominican Republic native was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on four hits and three walks in that outing after surrendering a total of one earned run in his previous two turns. Severino's worst start of the season came at home against Boston on Aug. 12, when he was ripped for 10 runs -- eight earned -- over 4 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (thumb) came off the DL on Saturday and went 1-for-3.

2. Yankees OF Aaron Hicks (oblique tightness) left Saturday's game and is day-to-day.

3. Boston SS Xander Bogaerts, who is 2-for-23 with 10 strikeouts in his last six games, has been out of the starting lineup the last two contests.

MLB roundup: Twins crush Royals 17-0
September 3, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eduardo Escobar had three hits and six RBIs, including two homers, and Joe Mauer added four hits as the Minnesota Twins hammered out 14 hits in a 17-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Brian Dozier added a three-run homer and Byron Buxton had three hits in his return to the lineup for Minnesota, which remained a game behind the New York Yankees for the top wild card in the American League.

But the Twins' offense has been the key during its resurgence since the trade deadline. Minnesota has outscored opponents 200-124 in its last 31 games. In the process, the Twins' season run differential went for minus-73 to plus-1.

Kyle Gibson (9-10) won his third straight start with six scoreless innings. He gave up five hits and struck out five. The first five hitters in Minnesota's lineup went 13-for-23 with three homers against Kansas City, which has lost seven of its past nine games.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 1

NEW YORK -- Matt Holliday hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth inning as New York defeated Boston.

Holliday appeared in his first game since missing nearly a month with a back injury. The designated hitter drove a first-pitch fastball from Drew Pomeranz (14-5) 443 feet into the left-field seats, giving the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

Holliday's homer helped Masahiro Tanaka (11-10) win his third straight since returning from a shoulder injury. He allowed one run and five hits in seven-plus innings, helping the Yankees get back to 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Red Sox in the American League East.

Astros 12, Mets 8 (1st game)

HOUSTON -- George Springer clubbed his career-best 30th home run and was one of six starters to record multi-hit games in Houston's interleague victory over New York in the first game of a doubleheader.

Springer, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, drilled an 0-2 fastball from the Mets' Matt Harvey (4-4) in the second inning to extend the Houston lead to 6-0 in the first game at Minute Maid Park since Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Gulf Coast last weekend.

The Astros plated four runs in the first inning off Harvey, making his first start since June 14 after being sidelined with a stress injury to the scapula bone in his shoulder. Harvey allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over two innings, the shortest outing of his career.

Astros 4, Mets 1 (2nd game)

HOUSTON -- Josh Reddick and Marwin Gonzalez recorded run-scoring hits to fuel a four-run, sixth-inning rally as Houston completed a doubleheader sweep of New York.

Reddick and Gonzalez plated Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve, respectively, after Bregman opened the sixth with a single off Mets right-hander Seth Lugo (5-4) before Altuve followed with a walk.

Brian McCann and J.D. Davis parlayed productive outs into RBIs against New York's Hansel Robles to extend the lead. Brad Peacock carried a shutout into the sixth inning before the Mets' Juan Lagares tripled and scored on Dominic Smith's double.

Cubs 14, Braves 12

CHICAGO -- Rene Rivera clubbed a grand slam while Anthony Rizzo capped a 2-for-5 day with a bases-clearing triple as Chicago won its sixth straight game.

The Cubs' Jon Lester (9-7) survived one rocky inning as he came off a 14-day disabled list stay for the start and win. Atlanta's Lucas Sims (2-5) dropped his second straight in a three-plus innings outing, his shortest of the season.

The Braves scored eight runs over the final three innings, including a three-run ninth off relievers Brian Duensing and Wade Davis. Davis finally quelled the rally as Freddie Freeman, the potential tying run, struck out.

Angels 7, Rangers 4 (10 innings)

ARLINGTON, Texas -- C.J. Cron belted a game-tying two-home run homer in the ninth inning and Kole Calhoun delivered a two-run tiebreaking single in the 10th as Los Angeles stunned Texas.

The Angels were down to their last strike when Luis Valbuena doubled to set the stage for Cron, who added a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning. Jose Leclerc (2-3) walked all three batters he faced to start the 10th inning and all three scored.

Blake Parker notched his fifth save in support of Yusmeiro Petit (4-0), who pitched a perfect ninth. The Rangers' A.J. Griffin retired the first 10 batters before Mike Trout doubled in the fourth.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2

DENVER -- J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer as Arizona won its ninth straight game.

The Diamondbacks' Patrick Corbin (13-11) gave up two hits and two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and four strikeouts in his 96-pitch outing. In his past five starts (35 2/3 innings), Corbin is 5-0 with a 0.50 ERA, eight walks and 33 strikeouts.

Jon Gray (6-4) gave up five hits and three runs over five innings as Colorado fell 5 1/2 games behind Arizona for the top wild-card spot in the National League. The Rockies lead Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games for the second position.

Marlins 10, Phillies 9

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton hit his major league-leading 52nd home run of the season to help Miami defeat Philadelphia.

Stanton's homer, a solo shot in the first inning that traveled 445 feet to left-center, was his first since Tuesday. Entering that first at-bat Saturday, he had endured a 1-for-17 slump.

Marcell Ozuna was another Marlins hitting star. He went 3-for-5 with his 32nd homer of the season and four RBIs. He has 107 RBIs this season, four behind Stanton for team honors.

Padres 6, Dodgers 5 (1st game)

SAN DIEGO -- Yangervis Solarte's ninth-inning home run lifted San Diego past Los Angeles in the first game of a split doubleheader.

Solarte drove Pedro Baez's 96 mph fastball into the right-field seats for his first career walk-off homer. Baez (3-3) took the loss after the Dodgers had rallied in the top of the inning.

Los Angeles tied the game in the ninth on pinch hitter Justin Turner's two-run homer off closer Brad Hand (3-4). The Dodgers' Cody Bellinger smashed his 35th homer -- a fourth-inning, 412-foot solo blast that tied him with Mike Piazza for the franchise's rookie home run mark set in 1993.

Indians 5, Tigers 2

DETROIT -- Abraham Almonte drove in three runs with a double and a single and Corey Kluber scattered eight hits over eight innings to win his 14th game as Cleveland defeated Detroit.

Kluber (14-4), who is 7-7 lifetime versus the Tigers, shut out Detroit through six innings but Mikie Mahtook doubled leading off the seventh, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Bryan Holaday's single to right center.

Jordan Zimmermann (8-12) allowed five runs and 12 hits on 98 pitches spread over his five innings. Detroit's Alex Presley recorded the first four-hit game of his career. There were no walks in the game.

Nationals 3, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Michael A. Taylor homered and Trea Turner hit a go-ahead double as Washington scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to defeat Milwaukee.

Ryan Madson (5-4) earned the win in relief by pitching a scoreless seventh inning in his first outing since Aug. 12. With the tying run on first base, closer Sean Doolittle got pinch-hitter Manny Pina to fly out to Taylor at the base of the wall to end the game.

Max Scherzer lasted only five innings and 75 pitches after being struck in the left leg by a line drive hit by Travis Shaw in the first inning. The right-hander, who was clearly bothered by his plant leg, limited the Brewers to one run on two hits.

Giants 2, Cardinals 1 (10 innings)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nick Hundley hit the second pitch of the 10th inning for a solo home run, lifting San Francisco over St. Louis.

The walk-off homer, the second of Hundley's career, came one inning after the Giants had rallied to force extra innings on an RBI single by Buster Posey. San Francisco had lost its previous four games, including the first two of this series.

The game began as a pitchers' duel between veteran right-handers Lance Lynn of the Cardinals and Jeff Samardzija of the Giants. Lynn allowed only one hit in eight innings, Samardzija two in seven.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- Kevin Pillar, Josh Donaldson and Darwin Barney each homered to lead Toronto over Baltimore.

Pillar homered against Orioles starter Wade Miley (8-11) on an 0-2 pitch to lead off the fifth inning, staking Toronto to a 1-0 lead.

Donaldson followed with two outs in the seventh by blasting his 24th home run of the season deep into the left-field seats off Orioles reliever Richard Rodriguez, 27, who was making his major league debut. That three-run homer extended the Blue Jays' lead to 5-0. Barney made in 7-0 in the eighth with a two-run homer off Orioles reliever Alec Asher.

White Sox 5, Rays 4

CHICAGO -- Avisail Garcia, Omar Narvaez, Alen Hanson and Yolmer Sanchez all homered as Chicago snapped a four-game losing streak.

Garcia's two-run homer in the seventh inning gave the White Sox some breathing room after Tampa Bay got within a run on Logan Morrison's solo home run in the sixth. The Rays pulled within 5-3 on Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Rays then loaded the bases with three straight singles and got within a run when Danny Espinosa scored on Evan Longoria's fielder's choice. But with the go-ahead run at the plate, Juan Minaya closed out the victory by striking out Morrison for his fourth save.

Pirates 5, Reds 0

PITTSBURGH -- Rookie Jordan Luplow hit a three-run homer in the eighth as Pittsburgh ended a four-game losing streak.

Luplow, who earlier in the game got his first major league hit, lofted a one-out homer to left to make it 4-0. Starling Marte drove in another with a fielder's choice later that inning.

The Pirates' Jameson Taillon pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and one intentional walk. Reliever A.J. Schugel (4-0) pitched the seventh and got the win.

LEADING OFF: Slumping Dodgers getting healthy
September 2, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

BACK TO EARTH

While they're still the best team in the majors by far, the Dodgers have been less otherworldly for the past week, dropping six of their last seven. But their weekend series in San Diego has been encouraging nonetheless, because two stars are healthy again.

Rookie phenom Cody Bellinger, who missed nine games with a sprained ankle, hit his first homer since Aug. 12 and 35th of the season in Saturday's loss to the Padres. Clayton Kershaw got Los Angeles' only win this week on Friday with six scoreless innings. The Dodgers send Alex Wood (14-1, 2.41 ERA) to the mound in Sunday's series finale.

FORMER ACE

The Orioles have gotten back into the AL wild-card race without much help from the formerly reliable Chris Tillman, who made three straight Opening Day starts for Baltimore before he missed this season's opener with an injury. A brief demotion to the bullpen didn't change much for the struggling right-hander, who's allowed 10 runs over 10 2/3 innings in two starts since rejoining the rotation. Tillman (1-7, 7.91 ERA) takes the mound Sunday against Toronto.

NO SALE

Red Sox ace Chris Sale tops the majors with 264 strikeouts, and has fanned 44 in 29 2/3 innings against the Yankees. But the lefty is 0-2 in four starts vs. New York this year despite a 2.12 ERA in those matchups. Sale (15-6) can tie for the big league lead in wins with a night-time victory at Yankee Stadium in the last scheduled game between the rivals this season.

Luis Severino (11-6, 3.14) faces Boston for the fourth time this season. After two sharp starts, he was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs by the Red Sox on Aug. 12.

STILL WAITING

No word yet from Major League Baseball on the appeals by Yankees catchers Gary Sanchez (four games) and Austin Romine (two games) of their suspensions from recent brawls in Detroit. Tigers star Miguel Cabrera and reliever Alex Wilson had their penalties cut by a game apiece after appeals to MLB.
