Sep 6, 2017

The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees received a bit of a break from Mother Nature on Wednesday, with the cascading rain allowing the American League East rivals additional time to reflect on the events of Tuesday's chaotic contest at Camden Yards. After erasing an early five-run deficit in the 7-6 win, the Orioles vie for a series victory in the rescheduled rubber match on Thursday afternoon.

Manny Machado highlighted the power surge on Tuesday, capping his fourth multi-homer performance of the season with a two-run shot in the ninth inning to give Baltimore its 10th victory in 13 contests. The 25-year-old, who has gone 15-for-37 with six RBIs and seven runs scored in his last nine contests, is 3-for-9 lifetime versus Thursday starter Sonny Gray. While the Orioles reside one game behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot, the Yankees sit four back of AL East-leading Boston and three in front of the Los Angeles Angels for the first wild card. Jacoby Ellsbury drove in a run in Monday's 7-4 triumph and recorded a two-run single the following night to improve to 8-for-12 with three runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, YES (New York), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Sonny Gray (8-9, 3.36 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (10-9, 4.79)

Gray dropped to 2-4 with a 3.16 ERA in six starts since being acquired from Oakland after surrendering four runs over seven innings in Friday's 4-1 setback against Boston. The 27-year-old struggled to keep the ball in the park as he allowed more than two earned runs for the first time in 12 turns. Gray tied a career high by serving up three homers versus the Red Sox to put a damper on his registering nine strikeouts for the second straight outing.

Gausman authored his second straight scoreless outing on Friday, scattering five hits and striking out eight in six innings of a no-decision against Toronto. While the 26-year-old is pitching well of late, he has been throttled by New York this season to the tune of permitting 19 runs and 32 hits in 19 1/3 frames en route to splitting a pair of decisions. Gausman has allowed the Yankees to bat .376 versus him this season, with Aaron Judge going 5-for-11 with two homers.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York 2B Starlin Castro is 8-for-14 with a homer, six RBIs and four runs during his three-game hitting streak.

2. Baltimore LF Trey Mancini has recorded two RBIs and two runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

3. Yankees LF Brett Gardner is 1-for-14 with three strikeouts in his last three contests.

PREDICTION: Yankees 6, Orioles 2

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (53-86) at Washington Nationals (85-54)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 07 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Phillies at Nationals
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Washington Nationals are on the fast track to their fourth National League East title in six years, while the Philadelphia Phillies have been on the road to nowhere for longer than they'd like to admit. The Nationals look to trim their magic number of six to win the division crown on Thursday, when they begin a season-high 10-game homestand with the opener of a four-game series against the Phillies.

Ryan Zimmerman homered for the second time in four contests to highlight his three-hit performance on Wednesday as Washington completed a three-game sweep of Miami with an 8-1 rout. The 32-year-old has scored seven runs while hitting safely in nine of his last 10 contests but is just 3-for-14 lifetime versus Thursday starter Aaron Nola. While the Nationals pretty much are on cruise control with the playoffs in the distance, the Phillies fell for the third time in five games after Mother Nature provided a premature end to a rain-shortened 6-3 setback against the New York Mets on Wednesday. Odubel Herrera carries a 19-game hitting streak into Thursday's tilt versus Tanner Roark, against whom he is 9-for-24 in his career.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (10-10, 3.72 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Tanner Roark (11-9, 4.48)

Nola was shelled for the third time in four outings on Saturday, allowing six runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 10-9 loss at Miami. The 24-year-old surrendered two homers for the second time in three trips to the mound and has permitted 19 runs and 31 hits en route to dropping three of his last four starts. Nola won his lone decision in two turns versus Washington this season but is 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA in eight career outings against the Nationals.

Roark recorded a quality start for the seventh time in nine outings on Friday after allowing one run while striking out 10 in a hard-luck 1-0 loss to Milwaukee. The 30-year-old has faced the Phillies on three occasions but has yet to record a decision despite limiting the club to a .194 batting average. Roark owns a 5-5 record and 3.47 ERA in 15 career games versus Philadelphia.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington 3B Anthony Rendon is 5-for-12 with one homer and five RBIs in his last three contests.

2. Philadelphia 2B Cesar Hernandez is 8-for-21 with three RBIs and four runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

3. Nationals RF Jayson Werth, who is a former Phillie, is mired in an 0-for-20 slump over his last six contests.

PREDICTION: Nationals 7, Phillies 2

Preview: Cubs at Pirates
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Chicago Cubs have hit a bit of an offensive slump, but they’ve managed to preserve their National League Central lead. The Cubs hope to get the bats going and add to their cushion in the division when they wrap up a four-game road series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.

Chicago has scored only five runs in its past four contests, but the Cubs snapped a three-game skid with a 1-0 win Wednesday. Despite the losing streak, the Cubs have maintained a four-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Chicago has six games remaining against the Brewers and seven against the Cardinals after wrapping up the season series against Pittsburgh. The series is tied 9-9, and late-inning drama has marked the past two games, as the Pirates scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday and Chicago plated the only run of the night in the top of the ninth Wednesday.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago, ATT SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (9-7, 4.46 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.50)

Lester wasn’t at his sharpest in his return from the disabled list Friday, but he still earned the win against Atlanta. The 33-year-old allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings in his first start since Aug. 17. Lester is 4-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 11 starts against the Pirates, including 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in three meetings this season.

Taillon has not received a decision in his last four starts. The 25-year-old was sharp last time out, though, holding Cincinnati to three hits over six scoreless frames for his first quality start in his last four outings. Taillon is 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA in four starts against Chicago.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 6-for-11 with a double and two homers against Taillon, and INF Javier Baez is 5-for-7 with two doubles and a homer against him.

2. Pirates 3B David Freese is 10-for-21 during a six-game hitting streak

3. Chicago RH Wade Davis converted his 29th save in as many chances Wednesday, extending his franchise record.

PREDICTION: Cubs 4, Pirates 3

Although Matt Harvey has plenty of pitches in his arsenal, it was New York Mets manager Terry Collins that tossed a change-up after electing against sending his right-hander to the mound on three days' rest due to a wet forecast. Mother Nature proved Collins correct as the Mets won a rain-shortened affair heading into Thursday's series opener against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Asdrubal Cabrera recorded an RBI single among his three hits in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over Philadelphia, giving him hits in seven of his last nine games - including all three versus Cincinnati from Aug. 29-31. The Reds won two of those three encounters, but New York has emerged victorious in six straight versus Cincinnati at Citi Field. Zack Cozart, who homered as the Reds completed a three-game sweep of Milwaukee with a 7-1 rout on Wednesday, is an impressive 6-for-11 lifetime versus Harvey. The victory notwithstanding, Cincinnati suffered quite the loss as major league stolen-base leader Billy Hamilton sustained a broken left thumb and promptly was placed on the 10-day disabled list.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Tyler Mahle (0-1, 2.45 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (4-4, 5.97)

Mahle is searching for his first major-league win despite having allowed just three earned runs and nine hits over 11 innings. The 22-year-old answered a four-walk performance on Aug. 27 by scattered five hits over six scoreless frames in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Saturday. Mahle has pitched 155 1/3 innings this season in stints with Double-A Pensacola, Triple-A Louisville and Cincinnati.

Harvey sputtered out of the gate in his first start since spending time on the disabled list with a stress reaction in his right shoulder, although Collins took an optimistic look after his hurler allowed seven runs in a career-low two innings at Houston on Saturday. "I thought his delivery was good," Collins told reporters. "Have to get his command down. Step one, it's just nice to see him back out there." The 28-year-old Harvey has handcuffed Adam Duvall (0-for-6, three strikeouts), although Joey Votto is 5-for-12 with a homer versus the right-hander.

WALK-OFFS

1. New York RHP Noah Syndergaard will make a rehab start for Single-A Brooklyn against the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday.

2. Cincinnati will hand the ball to LHP Amir Garrett for Friday's tilt in place of RHP Sal Romano, who is being pushed back to Sunday to give a cut on his right index finger a chance to heal.

3. Mets INF Wilmer Flores will be re-examined on Thursday after missing his fourth straight game with a broken nose.

PREDICTION: Reds 3, Mets 2

GAME: Miami Marlins (67-72) at Atlanta Braves (61-77)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 07 - 7:35 PM EST
WHERE: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Marlins at Braves
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Miami Marlins travel to Atlanta to open a four-game series with the Braves on Thursday, and odds are Giancarlo Stanton will continue his march to the 60-homer plateau. Miami’s slugging right fielder, who leads the majors with 53 homers, has blasted three in six games so far at Atlanta’s new SunTrust Park and five total in 11 matchups this season with the Braves, who have surrendered 66 homers in their past 48 games.

Stanton has hit 23 homers in his past 42 games entering the series opener for Miami, which has dropped four in a row to fall seven games behind the Colorado Rockies for the final National League wild-card spot. Even though Atlanta is 16 games under .500 and has won just two of its past seven, the Braves are 7-4 versus the Marlins this season. Atlanta split a doubleheader with Texas on Wednesday, winning the nightcap 5-4 after dropping the opener 12-8. Center fielder Ender Inciarte recorded five hits in the two games, raising his average to .307 on the season.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Dan Straily (9-8, 3.91 ERA) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (2-8, 4.31)

Straily has pitched well against Atlanta this season, going 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts with 20 strikeouts and three walks in 17 innings. The 28-year-old has struggled in the second half – posting a 5.06 ERA and 1.519 WHIP since the All-Star break after recording a 3.31 ERA and 1.045 WHIP before the break. Straily gave up four runs in five innings on Saturday to get the victory against the Phillies, snapping a streak of six consecutive starts of allowing three earned runs or fewer.

Newcomb makes the 17th start of his rookie season after an August in which he showed both the control issues (22 walks in 31 1/3 innings) and power (35 strikeouts) that marked his rise through the minors. He allowed more than three earned runs only once in six August starts, but failed to pitch into the sixth inning four times. Newcomb, who took the loss Aug. 31 against the Cubs despite surrendering only two earned runs with seven strikeouts in five innings, gave up three runs in six innings against the Marlins on June 16 in his second major-league start.

WALK-OFFS

1. Miami hopes 1B Justin Bour, sidelined since July 25 with a right oblique strain, can return to the lineup this weekend.

2. Atlanta’s catching platoon of Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki have been hit with pitches 29 times this season.

3. Marlins OF Ichiro Suzuki recorded his club-record 25th pinch-hit of the season Wednesday.

PREDICTION: Marlins 6, Braves 3

GAME: Cleveland Indians (83-56) at Chicago White Sox (54-84)

Preview: Indians at White Sox
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Cleveland Indians look to record a franchise-record 15th consecutive victory as well as complete a perfect 11-game road trip when they wrap up their four-game series against the host Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Cleveland equaled the club mark set last season with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday and is a major league-best 35-11 since July 21.

Carlos Santana went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's win and is 7-for-11 with two homers over his last three games. Edwin Encarnacion has registered four two-hit performances while going 11-for-27 with two homers during his seven-game hitting streak. The Indians have won the first three contests of the set despite being just 5-for-31 with runners in scoring position - 0-for-11 on Wednesday - while the White Sox have lost seven of their last nine to fall 30 games below .500. Adam Engel homered in the ninth inning for Chicago's lone run, just his sixth hit in 71 at-bats over his last 24 contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (14-4, 2.56 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.15)

Kluber has been superb over the past six-plus weeks, going 7-1 with a 2.12 ERA in his last nine starts. The 31-year-old has won five consecutive road decisions and is 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 11 turns away from home this season. Kluber is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts against the White Sox this year and 8-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 18 career appearances (17 starts).

Rodon is making his 13th start of the season and hopeful of a strong finish after a shoulder injury caused him to miss nearly three months. The 24-year-old has struck out 10 or more batters three times this year and has registered a total of 76 in 69 1/3 innings. Rodon settled for a no-decision against Cleveland when he allowed one run and six hits with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings on July 30 and is a solid 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 career appearances (nine starts) versus the Indians.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians INF Jose Ramirez was hitless in four at-bats Wednesday after going 19-for-38 with seven blasts over his previous nine contests.

2. Chicago OF Nicky Delmonico (wrist) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and went hitless in three at-bats.

3. Cleveland OF Jay Bruce (neck) likely will miss his sixth straight game.

Sep 7, 2017

With red-hot Cleveland running away in the American League Central, the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals have been relegated to the wild-card chase in order to reach the postseason. That puts heightened pressure on the division rivals when they open a pivotal four-game series on Thursday in Kansas City.

Holding down the second wild-card spot over a cluster of pursuers, Minnesota sends out Kyle Gibson, who will be looking to win his fourth consecutive start and beat the Royals for the second time in a week. Minnesota's Eduardo Escobar recorded three hits and drove in three runs in Wednesday's 10-6 win at Tampa Bay, giving him 11 RBIs over his last five games - including eight against Kansas City last weekend. Whit Merrifield registered three doubles and three RBIs in a 13-2 win at Detroit that capped a 4-2 road trip and drew Kansas City within 2 1/2 games of Minnesota. Mike Moustakas, who leads the Royals with 36 homers, exited Wednesday's game due to right lateral knee irritation and is listed as day-to-day.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (9-10, 5.33 ERA) vs. Royals RH Sam Gaviglio (3-5, 4.62)

Gibson was staked to a 10-run lead after two innings and tossed six scoreless frames in a 17-0 drubbing of Kansas City on Friday. He has surrendered only three runs over 19 2/3 innings during his winning streak, dropping his ERA below 5.40 for the first time this season. Moustakas (10-for-28) and Alcides Escobar (12-for-37) have fared well versus Gibson, but Melky Cabrera is just 2-for-25.

Claimed off waivers from Seattle last week, Gaviglio will be thrust into a big spot in his Royals debut - his first action in the majors since losing four straight starts with the Mariners from June 24-July 18. He will be seeking his first win since beating the Twins in Minnesota on June 14. Gaviglio surrendered three homers in that start and has served up 15 in 62 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. C Salvador Perez homered twice on Wednesday to give Kansas City 170 for the season, eclipsing the franchise mark of 168 that was set in 1987.

2. Twins 1B Joe Mauer, whose 14-game hitting streak ended Wednesday, went 7-for-13 versus Kansas City last weekend.

3. Royals CF Lorenzo Cain is 8-for-13 during his four-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Royals 5, Twins 4

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (72-67) at San Diego Padres (62-78)

Preview: Cardinals at Padres
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals are enjoying life on the road as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot on Thursday against the host San Diego Padres as they conclude their four-game series. The Cardinals have won four consecutive games and are 7-2 entering the finale of a 10-game road trip that has seen them climb within two games of Colorado for the National League's second wild-card spot.

St. Louis trails the first-place Chicago Cubs by four games in the National League Central and has consecutive three-game home sets against two below-.500 teams - the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds - on the horizon. Stephen Piscotty smashed a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 3-1 triumph as the Cardinals defeated San Diego for the third straight night. St. Louis will be without second baseman Kolten Wong (back) for a fourth consecutive contest as it attempts to saddle the Padres with a losing homestand after they began the 11-game stretch with a 5-2 record. Yangervis Solarte homered for the Padres' lone run on Wednesday but is just 8-for-51 over his last 15 contests.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (10-6, 2.99 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (6-13, 4.94)

Lynn is winless in his last five starts despite allowing fewer than three runs in four of the outings. The 30-year-old was superb against San Francisco in his last turn as he gave up one run in eight scoreless innings but settled for a no-decision. Lynn yielded four runs and six hits over six frames in a no-decision against the Padres on Aug. 22 and is 3-2 with a 3.25 ERA in six career starts.

Richard is 1-6 over his last 14 starts, surrendering five or more runs on five occasions during that stretch. The 33-year-old is 3-0 with a 3.53 ERA in six career turns against the Cardinals and gave up four runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision opposite Lynn last month. Richard is 5-7 with a 4.93 ERA in 14 home starts this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals OF Dexter Fowler (hip) returned to the lineup Wednesday after a three-game absence and went 0-for-3.

2. San Diego SS Erick Aybar is 0-for-9 with three strikeouts in the series.

3. St. Louis acquired RHP Juan Nicasio from Philadelphia for INF Eliezer Alvarez.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Padres 2

GAME: Colorado Rockies (74-65) at Los Angeles Dodgers (92-47)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, September 07 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Rockies at Dodgers
Gracenote
Sep 7, 2017

The Colorado Rockies squandered their chance to distance themselves from the pack in the National League wild-card race, going just 3-6 on their nine-game homestand. Colorado will have to try to gain some separation on the road as it begins a crucial eight-game trek on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series against the major league-best - and supremely struggling - Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rockies failed to complete a three-game sweep of San Francisco on Wednesday, allowing 17 hits in an 11-3 defeat, and saw their lead for the second wild card shrink to two games over St. Louis while Milwaukee remained 2 1/2 back. Los Angeles' advantage in the NL West is dangerously close to single digits after it was outscored 19-2 during a three-game sweep at the hands of wild card-leading Arizona, which has trimmed its deficit for the division crown to 10 1/2 games thanks to a 13-game winning streak. The Dodgers, who can clinch a playoff berth Thursday with a victory and a loss by the Chicago Cubs, managed only four hits in Wednesday's 3-1 setback - their sixth loss in a row and 11th in 12 contests. Rookie Cody Bellinger drove in the lone run in the defeat, raising his team-leading RBI total to 83 in just 109 games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Jon Gray (6-4, 4.26 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (16-2, 1.95)

Gray is coming off a loss to Arizona on Saturday in which he gave up three runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. The 25-year-old native of Oklahoma has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last eight outings but is just 3-3 in that span. Gray is 2-3 with a 3.75 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles, including a no-decision on April 8 in which he allowed one run over 5 1/3 frames despite yielding four hits and three walks.

Kershaw is expected to make his second start since missing over one month with a lower back strain. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner showed no ill effects from the injury in his return, as he allowed two hits and struck out seven over six scoreless innings of a triumph at San Diego on Friday - his 12th straight victory since losing to San Francisco on May 1. Kershaw yielded four runs over six frames in a loss at Colorado on April 8 but won his next three turns against the Rockies, allowing a total of four runs over 20 innings, to improve to 21-6 lifetime versus the club.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers have lost five straight at home, scoring a total of four runs while getting shut out twice.

2. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu is riding a 14-game hitting streak after going 5-for-13 in the three-game series against San Francisco.

3. Los Angeles purchased the contract of Walker Buehler from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated fellow RHP Fabio Castillo for assignment.
