Preview: Sabres at Penguins
Gracenote
Nov 14, 2017

The Pittsburgh Penguins are bidding that the comforts of home will help get both the team - and captain Sidney Crosby - back on track. The two-time reigning Stanley Cup champions look to avert a seventh loss in nine games overall on Tuesday when they host the Buffalo Sabres at PPG Paints Arena, where the Penguins own a 5-0-1 mark this season.

"We definitely are excited for the fact that we're going to be here a little bit more,” said Crosby, who is mired in an 11-game goal drought. The two-time Hart Trophy winner has 51 points (16 goals, 35 assists) in 34 career encounters against Buffalo, with two goals coming in three meetings last season. Buffalo's Jack Eichel, who tallied once versus Pittsburgh last season, is keeping optimistic despite failing to score in his last eight games overall. "You're going to go through ups and downs," the 21-year-old Eichel said. "Maybe fighting the puck, doing a little too much thinking. Just (need to) get back to playing – moving my feet, doing the things that make me successful. Just try to get engaged mentally and physically early."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG-Buffalo, SN1, AT&T Sports Network-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE SABRES (5-9-3): Coach Phil Housley focused the bulk of Monday's practice at KeyBank Center attempting to improve the team's line changes. "I think our line changes have got to be a little bit sharper," Housley said. "Not just the change part - our lengths of shift can come down - but also when we dump it in, having a plan and a balance coming into that forecheck so teams aren't able to quick it up against us or get through the neutral zone quickly." Marco Scandella missed Monday's practice with an illness, but Housley expects the defenseman to be in the lineup versus Pittsburgh.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (9-7-3): Phil Kessel has answered a sluggish start to the season in the goal-scoring department by finding the net in each of his last three contests while extending his point streak to four (three goals, four assists) in Saturday's 5-4 shootout loss to Nashville. Kessel assisted on the first goal of the season for defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who is welcoming a return home after the team played 13 of its first 19 games away from PPG Paints Arena. "Being on the road for that long, you miss your family, you miss everything you're accustomed to," Dumoulin said. "It's tough packing up and traveling to different cities, getting in late nights. It takes a toll and it's a grind, but it's good to have some home games here coming up."

OVERTIME

1. Buffalo and Pittsburgh have permitted 23 goals in the second period this season, tying them for the third-highest total in the league.

2. Penguins D Kris Letang notched two assists on Saturday to move within one point of 400 for his career.

3. The Sabres assigned F Justin Bailey to Rochester of the American Hockey League on Monday.

PREDICTION: Sabres 4, Penguins 2

Preview: Blue Jackets at Canadiens
Gracenote
Nov 13, 2017

The Montreal Canadiens got off to a blistering start a year ago before they were rocked in a record-setting loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. That memory likely will be in the minds of the resurgent Canadiens as they prepare to host the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night in this season's first meeting between the teams..

Montreal had won eight straight during a 9-0-1 start before a 10-0 bludgeoning in Columbus 12 months ago, matching the biggest defeat in franchise history. The Canadiens stumbled out of the gate this season, going 1-6-1 in their first eight games, but they have turned things around by winning four of their last five. The Blue Jackets halted a four-game skid with a 2-1 shootout victory in Detroit on Saturday night, but they are 4-0-1 in their last five against Montreal. Columbus, which set a club record with the 10-goal outburst against the Canadiens last November. has scored just one regulation goal in each of the past three games and owns the league's worst power play.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), RDS, TSN2 (Montreal)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (10-7-1): Artemi Panarin pumped in 61 goals in his first two seasons with Chicago, but he tallied just once in his first 14 games with Columbus. However, the 26-year-old is showing signs of emerging from his funk by scoring twice in the past four games including the lone regulation tally against Detroit. “Those things start putting layers of confidence for a guy like him,” coach John Tortorella said. “Hopefully, it will springboard him.”

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (8-9-1): Montreal is making a run despite the absence of former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Carey Price (lower body), who has missed the past five games, and backup Al Montoya (concussion). Charlie Lindgren has stepped into the void and is expected to make his fifth consecutive start versus Columbus. "He's been awesome," said captain Max Pacioretty, who scored the decisive tally in Saturday's 2-1 overtime win over Buffalo.

OVERTIME

1. The Blue Jackets shuffled their power-play units at Monday's practice. They are 13 of 52 with the extra skater in the last 15 games versus Montreal.

2. Lindgren, who sports a 6-1-0 lifetime record, has yielded five goals in four starts this season.

3. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky was 2-0-1 versus Montreal last season, stopping 95 of 97 shots.

PREDICTION: Canadiens 3, Blue Jackets 2

Preview: Stars at Panthers
Gracenote
Nov 14, 2017

The struggling Florida Panthers hope to begin digging themselves out from the bottom of the Eastern Conference when they host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night. Florida has dropped six of its last seven contests after a frustrating 2-1 loss at New Jersey on Saturday, in which it had a 33-21 edge in shots and earned four power-play opportunities, to end the road trip 1-2-0.

First-year Panthers coach Bob Boughner was pleased with the effort Saturday and told reporters, “It’s just a work in progress and we just have to keep getting better every day. If we play this way on a nightly basis, we’ll get our share of points.” Roberto Luongo, who was rested Saturday, is likely to return between the pipes for the Panthers and Dallas is expected to go with backup goalie Kari Lehtonen after Ben Bishop played against Carolina on Monday in a 5-1 setback. The Stars allowed the final four goals of the contest to lose for the third time in five games this month after finishing October with six victories in the last eight outings. Alexander Radulov scored for Dallas on Monday to extend his point streak to eight games, in which he has scored five times and set up six others.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest Plus (Dallas), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE STARS (9-8-0): Defenseman John Klingberg, who leads the team with 18 points, was held off the scoresheet against Carolina and posted a minus-3 rating with three shots on net. Captain Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin each had an assist on Radulov’s power-play goal Monday to push their season totals to 17 points each as Dallas’ league-leading man-advantage unit (31.4 percent overall) improved to 10-for-25 in its last eight contests. Lehtonen, who boasts 297 career wins, is 2-3-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in five games this season (three starts).

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (5-9-2): Florida was reportedly missing three players at practice Monday with captain Derek Mackenzie (undisclosed), along with fellow forwards Jonathan Huberdeau (illness) and Jared McCann (lower-body), on the sidelines. Florida recalled forward Curtis Valk from Springfield of the AHL and Boughner told reporters Huberdeau (team-leading 19 points) is likely to be ready for Tuesday. Vincent Trocheck, who has scored four times in the last five games, is tied with Aleksander Barkov for second on the team with 17 points and fellow forward Evgenii Dadonov has 16.

OVERTIME

1. Dallas F Tyler Pitlick returned to the lineup Monday after missing the previous two contests with an upper-body injury.

2. Florida D Mike Matheson, who notched his second assist of the season Saturday, is slated to play his 100th NHL game Tuesday.

3. The road team has won the last five meetings. ... Dallas hosts the Panthers on Jan. 23.

Preview: Capitals at Predators
Gracenote
Nov 13, 2017

Center Kyle Turris made quite an impression in his Nashville debut and looks for more of the same when the Predators host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday in a matchup of two teams on the rise. Turris had a goal and an assist in his first game since being acquired from Ottawa as Nashville beat Pittsburgh 5-4 in a shootout Saturday for its fourth consecutive victory.

Turris, who boasts 11 points in 12 games overall this season, told reporters after his first experience as a Predator in Nashville, “It was a lot of fun. The crowd was real loud and the energy in the building. … it was an exciting game.” The Predators have recorded 16 goals during their winning streak and will have their work cut out for them to continue that offensive roll against Washington, which is 5-1-0 in November and allowed just nine tallies in the past five contests. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby (.927 save percentage) is expected to go after his seventh straight victory and has allowed six goals in the past four to be named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week. “Holts is the best player every night for us,” Washington right wing Tom Wilson told reporters after the 2-1 shootout win over Edmonton on Sunday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (10-7-1): Dmitry Orlov had the only goal for Washington on Sunday and got help from fellow defenseman Madison Bowey, who has fit in nicely on the blueline with five assists and a plus-2 rating. Captain Alex Ovechkin tops the team with 13 goals and shares the lead in points at 19 with linemate Evgeny Kuznetsov, while defenseman John Carlson boasts three multi-point games in the last six outings. Right wing Brett Connolly (concussion) returned to the lineup Sunday and top-four defenseman Matt Niskanen (upper body) has been skating.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (9-5-2): Turris played 21:38 in his first game and his goal already put him ahead of fellow center Ryan Johansen (eight assists) on the scoring list for Nashville as the former fourth overall pick has yet to hit the back of the net. “I think sometimes, especially at the start of the year, I’ve been a little too passive,” Johansen, who signed an eight-year, $64 million contract before the season, told the Tennessean. “I need to find ways to bring pucks to the net more often.” Forward Viktor Arvidsson has posted three goals and two assists during a four-game point streak.

OVERTIME

1. The Predators could get C Nick Bonino (lower body) back in the lineup for the first time since Oct. 14, but F Scott Hartnell (lower body) is likely out.

2. Nashville F Filip Forsberg leads the team with eight goals and 16 points, but has not scored in five games and remains at 99 in his career.

3. The Capitals, who are 5-4-1 on the road, play at Colorado on Thursday and will then host nine of the next 10 contests.

Preview: Flyers at Wild
Gracenote
Nov 14, 2017

Jason Zucker is enjoying a scoring binge for the ages by netting each of the Minnesota Wild's last six goals, including the team's lone tally in a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Named the NHL's First Star of the Week, Zucker bids to tie the league record with seven - initially set by Ottawa's Cy Denneny in 1921 and matched 70 years later - when the Wild host the Flyers to conclude a home-and-home series on Tuesday.

"That's what happens when you get on a line with Eric Staal – good things happen," a gracious Zucker said following Monday's practice. "We've been trying to play hard and use our speed and use our assets to our advantage. ... For me they’ve happened to go in, but the other guys have been a huge part of it as well." The 25-year-old Zucker leads the team in goals (nine) and points (14) on the heels of last season's breakout campaign of 22 goals, 47 points and a league-best plus-34 rating. While the Wild have won two in a row in a bid to extract itself from the cellar of the Central Division, the Flyers have seen a fast start slowed with losses in six of their last nine (3-4-2). Brian Elliott has overcome a sluggish start to the season with a 1.00 goals-against average and .970 save percentage in his last two games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia-Plus, FSN North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (8-7-2): Philadelphia could receive a jolt with the potential return of second overall pick Nolan Patrick, who skated with the team on Monday. "It was good. Fun to get back out there and be a part of the team again," said the 19-year-old Patrick, who has been sidelined for eight games after having his head banged against the glass following a shoulder-to-shoulder check on Oct. 24. The Flyers have averaged 3.3 goals per game in nine contests with Patrick in the lineup, as opposed to 2.5 in the eight without him.

ABOUT THE WILD (7-7-2): While Zucker's heroics have him on the cusp of NHL history, Devan Dubnyk has a chance to repeat his feat of last season should he blank the Flyers again for his third straight shutout. The 31-year-old Saskatchewan native has answered a three-start losing skid in which he yielded just eight goals by turning aside the last 73 shots he's faced in back-to-back blankings of Montreal and Philadelphia. "When things just don't feel like they're going your way, the hardest thing to do is stay with what you're doing, just have trust in what you're doing," Dubnyk told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol shuffled his lines in Monday's practice, notably moving Jordan Weal from his traditional wing to center a grouping with RW Wayne Simmonds and LW Dale Weise.

2. Minnesota RW Nino Niederreiter has recorded five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games since returning from a high ankle sprain.

3. The Flyers are 1-for-16 on the power play in November.

PREDICTION: Flyers 3, Wild 2

Preview: Coyotes at Jets
Gracenote
Nov 13, 2017

Patrik Laine started November in the midst of the first slump of his brief NHL career and the Winnipeg Jets forward publicly stated to reporters he was struggling to find himself after four consecutive games with no points. But entering Tuesday’s home contest with the Arizona Coyotes, the Finnish sharpshooter has rediscovered his scoring touch, recording goals in five consecutive contests as Winnipeg continues its strong early-season play.

The 19-year-old extended his streak with an empty-net tally in the final seconds of Saturday’s 4-1 triumph at Arizona, giving the Jets points in nine of their past 10 games. “Our preparation has been spot on, and our bench has been great,” Jets center Blake Wheeler told reporters after Saturday’s victory, a game in which Winnipeg rebounded 24 hours after losing at Vegas. The Coyotes’ difficult season continues as Arizona has yet to win in regulation through 19 games. “We’ve just got to find some guys to make some plays,” Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet told reporters after Saturday’s defeat. “That’s the key right now.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (2-14-3): Arizona embarks on a four-game Canadian road trip riding a four-game losing streak, and have allowed an NHL worst 74 goals. Center Derek Stepan snapped a nine-game pointless streak with an assist Saturday. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson ranks second on the team with 11 points (10 assists), and has recorded at least one assist in three of his past four contests.

ABOUT THE JETS (9-4-3): Winnipeg’s power play ranked sixth in the NHL at 24.1 percent, helping fuel an offense averaging 3.25 goals per contest (10th in the league) entering Monday. Connor Hellebuyck, who did not play Saturday after suffering his first loss in regulation this season against Vegas, will get the start Tuesday. Wheeler is second in the league in assists (18) and third in points (23).

OVERTIME

1. Arizona C Clayton Keller, who leads the Coyotes in goals (11) and points (17), hasn't hit the scoresheet in his past three games.

2. The Coyotes are 1-for-17 on the power play in the past seven games.

3. Winnipeg C Mathieu Perreault (lower-body injury) will not play Tuesday, but is getting closer to returning after missing the past 11 games.

PREDICTION: Jets 3, Coyotes 1

Preview: Golden Knights at Oilers
Gracenote
Nov 13, 2017

The Edmonton Oilers are trying to solve both their offensive woes as well as an inability to win at Rogers Place as they prepare to host the expansion Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night. Edmonton is returning home following a 2-1-1 road trip, which included winning back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Oilers managed only eight goals (six in regulation) during the four-game trek and were limited to one tally or less for the fifth time in Sunday's 2-1 shootout loss at Washington, but coach Todd McLellan was content with the trip. "We'll take the five of eight (points)," McLellan said. "We wish we could have got more. But now we've got a real test ahead of us going home where we haven't performed well." Vegas following up a 1-4-1 road trip with a 5-2 win over Winnipeg on Friday night to improve 7-1-0 at home. The Golden Knights will play their next six games against Pacific rivals after facing only one division opponent thus far -- a home-and-home against Arizona on Oct. 7 and 10.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), Sportsnet West (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (10-5-1): There was a minor update regarding Vegas' injury-ravaged goaltender corps, with the announcement that backup Malcolm Subban will accompany the team to Edmonton, although he has not been cleared to play. Starter Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) and Oscar Dansk (lower body) will remain in Nevada, all but assuring a seventh straight start for Maxime Lagace. Defenseman Luca Sbisa also will not make the trip to Western Canada, coach Gerard Gallant said Monday.

ABOUT THE OILERS (6-9-2): Edmonton has scored a league-low 38 times and both of its wins on the road trip came courtesy of overtime goals by captain Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Goaltender Cam Talbot, who had a string of 11 straight starts halted in Washington, owns a 3.54 goals-against average and .894 save percentage at home as opposed to marks of 2.16 and .933 on the road. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has thrived at Rogers Place with five goals and eight points in nine games.

OVERTIME

1. McDavid was held off the scoresheet Sunday but has not been held without a point in consecutive games this season.

2. Golden Knights F William Karlsson, who has six goals and 10 points in his last 10, will play in his 200th game Tuesday.

3. Edmonton has the league's worst penalty kill with a success rate of 71.4 percent.

PREDICTION: Oilers 4, Golden Knights 1

Preview: Canucks at Kings
Gracenote
Nov 14, 2017

Captain Anze Kopitar is traveling the fast track on the strength of an pair of impressive streaks, however the 30-year-old Slovene seemingly is more interested in putting a halt to another before it picks up steam. Kopitar carries a career-high seven-game assist streak and personal best-tying eight-game point stretch into Tuesday's tilt as the Los Angeles Kings bid to end a modest two-game skid versus the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

"There's always more you can do, but it is what it is now," Kopitar said. "There's a couple things now that we have to take into consideration and see what we can improve on, and make sure we’re ready on Tuesday." Kopitar set up Dustin Brown for a power-play goal in the first period on Sunday, but Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles dropped a 2-1 setback to San Jose for its fourth loss in six outings after a blistering 9-1-1 start to the season. The Sharks also handed the second straight loss for the Canucks, a 5-0 decision on Saturday to be precise. Vancouver is 1-2-0 on its four-game road trip after winning four of its previous five away from home.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), FSN West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (8-7-2): Vancouver's 28th-ranked power play went 0-for-5 for the second straight game on Sunday and is just 2-for-21 in November heading into a tilt with Los Angeles, which boasts the league's top-ranked penalty kill at a 91.9 percent clip. "Teams are so good now killing, you can't guess out there," captain Henrik Sedin told the Vancouver Province. "You have to know where to put pucks and get the second chances and even after scrambles, knowing where to put pucks. That's been our biggest problem." A 24th-ranked penalty kill certainly hasn't been part of the solution for the Canucks, who have yielded seven power-play goals in the last five games.

ABOUT THE KINGS (11-4-2): Brown appears to have gained a step while playing under new coach John Stevens, and his offensive production has followed suit. The 33-year-old matched his power-play goal output from last season by netting his fourth of the campaign on Sunday and his eight tallies in 17 games in 2017-18 are already past the halfway mark to the 14 he recorded in 80 contests last season. Brown has collected two goals and as many assists during his three-game point streak while Kopitar has 10 points (two goals, eight assists) during his eight-game run.

OVERTIME

1. Vancouver G Jacob Markstrom has permitted 13 goals during his last four starts (1-3-0) after allowing two goals or fewer in each of his six previous outings.

2. Kings G Jonathan Quick owns a stellar 1.61 goals-against average and .939 save percentage in 32 career encounters versus the Canucks, but only has a 16-14-2 mark to show for it.

3. Vancouver's Markus Granlund replaced fellow C Alexander Burmistrov on a line during Monday's practice while Brendan Gaunce was once again shuffled to wing with C Brandon Sutter and RW Derek Dorsett.

PREDICTION: Kings 2, Canucks 1
