Sep 13, 2017

The Colorado Rockies are charging hard toward the top wild-card spot in the National League and can cut their deficit to two games when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday for the third contest of their four-game series. Colorado entered the set trailing wild card-leading Arizona by five games but captured the first two matchups to extend its winning streak to six.

The Rockies came away with a 4-2 triumph on Tuesday as Carlos Gonzalez completed a two-homer performance by snapping a tie with his second two-run shot of the night in the seventh inning. Gonzalez has collected 11 RBIs over his last 10 games for Colorado, which has won eight straight on the road and is 3 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. J.D. Martinez went deep for the Diamondbacks, who fell to 1-4 on their seven-game homestand. The reigning NL Player of the Week posted his fourth consecutive multi-hit effort on Tuesday and is 20-for-44 with nine blasts and 18 RBIs in 10 games this month.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (10-6, 4.27 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (13-12, 4.16)

Marquez is seeking his first win in five starts after giving up four runs - two earned - and six hits in four innings of a no-decision against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Friday. The 22-year-old Venezuelan has not been victorious since Aug. 18, when he topped Milwaukee despite yielding four runs and seven hits - three homers - in 5 2/3 frames. Marquez has yet to defeat Arizona this season, going 0-2 with a 3.94 ERA in five starts.

Corbin had his five-start winning streak snapped in a big way on Friday as he was tagged for eight runs on 11 hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to San Diego. The 28-year-old New Yorker had been stellar during his run of success, allowing a total of two earned runs in 35 2/3 frames. Corbin owns a 5.02 ERA against the Rockies in 16 career appearances (15 starts) but a 6-3 record after giving up two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a win at Colorado on Sept. 2.

WALK-OFFS

1. Martinez's homer on Tuesday was his 38th of the season, matching the career high he set in 2015 with Detroit.

2. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu is 6-for-13 over his last three games and has hit safely in 19 of his last 20 contests.

3. Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt is two homers shy of tying his career high of 36, which he set in 2013.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 1

GAME: Houston Astros (87-57) at Los Angeles Angels (73-71)

Preview: Astros at Angels
Gracenote
Sep 13, 2017

The Houston Astros have halted their four-game skid and look to move closer to wrapping up the American League West when they visit the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Justin Verlander's stellar pitching helped Houston to a 1-0 victory on Tuesday, reducing its magic number to clinch the division to five.

Verlander allowed one hit in eight innings and Yuli Gurriel singled in the lone run as the Astros improved to 46-26 on the road. The setback continued a ragged stretch for the Angels, who have dropped four of their last five to fall two games behind Minnesota for the AL's second wild-card berth. Los Angeles has scored just 10 runs during the five-game stretch and superstar Mike Trout is in a 2-for-21 funk over his last seven contests. Houston scratched Lance McCullers Jr. from his scheduled start in the middle game of the set late Tuesday night, and that is probably fine with the Angels as the right-hander has allowed just five hits and one unearned run in 13 2/3 innings against them this season.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Mike Fiers (8-9, 4.87 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-5, 4.86)

Fiers is being tabbed to make the start after McCullers reported fatigue in his arm while throwing prior to Tuesday's game. The 32-year-old recently lost his spot in the rotation when the Astros acquired Verlander and he was roughed up for 14 runs over just 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts before making his most-recent appearance in relief. Fiers is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two starts versus the Angels this season, 3-2 with a 4.40 ERA in seven career outings and routinely has shut down Brandon Phillips (2-for-19).

Skaggs lost his fourth straight decision despite matching his season high with nine strikeouts against Oakland in his last turn. The 24-year-old gave up three runs and six hits over six innings in the setback, which marked his eighth straight winless outing. Skaggs is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in five career starts against Houston and allowed five runs - four earned - and six hits over five frames of a no-decision versus the Astros on Aug. 26.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros RF Josh Reddick is hitless in seven at-bats over his last two games after beginning September with 13 RBIs during a 14-for-25 stretch.

2. Los Angeles LF Justin Upton is homerless in his last 14 contests, including 10 since being acquired from Detroit.

3. Houston's Collin McHugh (lacerated right middle fingernail) will miss his start on Thursday, with fellow RHP Brad Peacock taking his place.

PREDICTION: Astros 5, Angels 2

Preview: Dodgers at Giants
Gracenote
Sep 13, 2017

The Dodgers have ended their longest losing streak since moving to Los Angeles and look to win consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 24 and 25 when they visit the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game series. Los Angeles halted its 11-game slide with a 5-3 victory on Tuesday, which was only its second win in 18 contests.

The victory allowed the Dodgers to increase their lead over Washington for the National League's best record to 4 1/2 games - a crucial development with the teams slated for a three-game weekend set in the nation's capital. Yasiel Puig contributed a two-run double in Tuesday's triumph and is 4-for-10 with a homer and three RBIs in the series. Hunter Pence (6-for-10 in the series) and Joe Panik each recorded three hits for the Giants, who registered 14 overall while losing for the 13th time in 18 games. Buster Posey was just 1-for-5 but is a torrid 18-for-45 with seven RBIs during his 12-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:08 p.m. ET, ESPN, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Yu Darvish (8-12, 4.25 ERA) vs. Giants LH Matt Moore (5-13, 5.31)

Darvish is 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA in six starts since being acquired from Texas despite registering 40 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old from Japan has dropped each of his last three turns, posting a horrendous 9.49 ERA over 12 1/3 frames during the stretch. Darvish, who will be facing the Giants for the first time, is 12 strikeouts shy of his third campaign with 200.

Moore has experienced a dismal season but put together a solid effort while defeating the Chicago White Sox in his last turn. The 28-year-old allowed two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings, marking the fourth time in five outings he has given up fewer than three runs. Moore is 0-1 with a 7.02 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season and 3-3 with a 5.36 ERA in eight career turns.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants RHP Mark Melancon (forearm) underwent season-ending surgery to conclude the disappointing first campaign of his four-year, $62 million deal.

2. Tuesday's win was only Los Angeles' eighth in its last 29 games at AT&T Park.

3. San Francisco CF Denard Span, who is 4-for-5 with a homer in the series, is 5-for-8 with three doubles against Darvish.

PREDICTION: Giants 6, Dodgers 4
