Self Traders
the one's who do on-line trading which platform are you content with;
Canadian On-line Brokers QTrade Questrade Scotialine TD Direct CIBC Investors Edge BMO Royal Virtual Brokers etc, or do you prefer to go through a brokerage firm and pay the 2% plus in fees but you still control what to buy and/or sell and how much? Last edited by pyramid; 11-23-2017 at 03:21 PM. |

I concur and agree with cman's comment about control on the account. I did this 45 years ago when it was mandatory to use a landline telephone to call a broker, who motioned to a man called "a runner" who quickly moved, running where possible, to the pit where that particular stock had a specialist who "made a market" in that particular stock and a few more. Then they exchanged hand signals to buy or sell. Or there was an older technique explained below. You did not have to have the advanced and expensive device called a telephone as it was not always available. You could use a system chartered by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution called the Post Office. I was in the Army in 1967 when I turned 21 and I mailed a letter that started a series of telephone calls to make my first investment. |

what brand of computer do you use? I'll be setting up a 4 monitor for desktop with a backup power source (don't want to be in the middle of a buy/sell transaction and the power goes out) speed is paramount for day to day operations. been looking at business HP and Lenovo
but I'm on the fence on what brand to go with on the laptop, smae as above looking at business class HP Elite or Probook and the Lenovo T series? any thoughts ? thanks |

I'm assuming that both response are in the USA from the Trading platforms being used,
I'm in Canada the platforms will be different, but can be in CAD dollars or USD dollars in a Tax Free Account evident the Canadians don't mettle in the stock markets via online or through a Broker at 2.5% - up transaction (commission) or (juice) just a fancy word for legal Bookie |

I use a lenovo laptop with an i7 chip. Thinkorswim also works on my old dell with the i5 chip.
I have no experience in a 4 monitor setup, but the biggest, fastest unit in the non-Apple should be what you want. My bets for Sunday are here; NFL - [107] Chicago Bears +7-121 Game start 12/10/2017 12:00 PM NFL - [117] Green Bay Packers -4.5 +108 Game start 12/10/2017 12:00 PM NFL - [112] Jacksonville Jaguars -2.5 -115 Game start 12/10/2017 03:25 PM NFL - [116] Carolina Panthers +128 Game start 12/10/2017 12:00 PM NFL - [120] Houston Texans -2.5 -115 Game start 12/10/2017 12:00 PM |

Since it is none of my business, I do not need to know what you need. I would buy 16GB RAM, or more, i7 chips, and then select your other upgrades. It's been several lifetimes (in computer years) since I bought these things. I posted my cyber Monday pick to replace my old Dell. I would suggest that you go to lenovo here; Desktops | All-in-One Desktop PCs and Computers | Lenovo US and start customizing. I would like the main RAM to be the SSD type but they all have that. Everything else is obsolete. My all SSD X1, with no spinning HD, starts in as little as 3% to 10% of the time of old Dell but the Dell has a lot of crap that wants an update which I never put on the new unit. I suggest that you only use your new unit for trading. Letters, email and more just slow them down. I'm sure you have some older unit to use for capersmall, letters, etc. There is a new chip call "M" or someting that runs for hours, is cooler but slower Last edited by AuburnKid; 12-09-2017 at 01:00 PM. I reread your question. If you think you need a UPS, you also should have a smartphone with an app to use if the cable goes out. I use thinkorswim from TD Ameritrade
