Risking 4000 to profit 200 is never a good proposition especially with the quarter crack issue but best of luck to you sir

FDS, do you wait to see the place pool before you bet or are you all in long before the race?

Good luck Dipper. I would never have the balls to lay that much in any one horse race.

he's gonna be roughly the same level of favorite he was in the Preakness...bettors got 30% back on their money from a place bet on Big Brown in that race.

He'll probably pay more to place than win again.

I heard rumours Casino Drive slightly bruised his foot and his status is in doubt. If he's scratched then Big Brown pays 2.10 to place.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. WAY too many factors in a horse race to risk that.

so then 4k on big brown would pay a profit of 1200?

weird...so if you play the better odds on placing and he wins you still win your place wager and better return than betting to win?

quick pari-mutual aside:

The place pools pays according to how much is bet to place on each horse.

Horse A 500 dollars
Horse B 1000 dollars

The whole place pool after the tracks cut is for example 10000

If Horse A and Horse B are the 2 placing horses

Horse A bettors get their 500 dollars returned ($1 for $1)
Horse B bettors get their 1000 dollars returned ($1 for $1)

the 2 share the other $8500 dollars ($4250 each)

Horse A bettors get an additional $4250/500 ($8.50) dollars for each dollar bet
Horse B bettors get an additional $4250/1000 ($4.25) dollars for each dollar bet

When there is a big race with a big favorite the public hammers him to win and while they hammer him to place they may not do it to the same extent. As a result the place payout could be more than the win payout...

i dont know much of anything about horse racing...but no idea why you would take the favourite to win outright over place if you get a better return on the place

well it rarely happens and the payout for place bet cannot be determined until the other place horse has been determined...
