Barbaro is for real....

For those following the Triple Crown trail, a statement was made yesterday when Barbaro won the Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. This colt had won its first 3 starts on the turf by a total of more than 20 lengths. The only question was whether he could handle the dirt and he proved yesterday he could. Keep a close eye on this one...

Other winners in the Derby prpe races yesterday were Keyed Entry in the Hutcheson( Gr II) at Gulfstream and Bob and John in the Sham at Santa Anita.

Apparently trainer Michael Matz will race Barbaro just 1 more time before the Derby. The plan is to be off 5 weeks before the Derby, so looks like he will race in the Florida Derby on April 1st. That will be a 9 week layoff since his last race. He also ran on January 1st, so he will have 3 starts this year before the Derby and will be well rested with 5 weeks off.

Barbaro looked very good yesterday winning on a fast track and from the #10 post position. As I said 9 weeks ago, this will be his only race til the Derby, so he will enter the Derby undeated at 5-0.

Another interesting horse who won the UAE Derby last weekend in the Dubai World Cup races is Discreet Cat, who is actually the top qualifier for the Derby right now based on earnings, but still not sure whether he will be shipped over for the Derby or not.

Here is a list of my top 10 Derby candidates as I see them right now...

1. Barbaro
2. Brother Derek
3. Discreet cat
4. Lawyer Ron
5. A. P. Warrior
6. Bluegrass cat
7. Point Determined
8. Bob and John
9. First Samurai
10. Like Now

The next 2 weekends will have some big derby prep races with most of these horses running. Next wekend the 2 big ones are the Santa Anita Derby where Brother Derek and point Determined will both probably run and the Wood Memorial from Aqueduct where Bluegrass Cat is schedule to run and possibly Bob and John will be shipped east to run there.

I didnt leave him out, I just dont have him in my top 10 as of right now. There are 5 good horses that are just outside my top 10 that could still be legitamate contenders in the derby. Red Raymond, Steppenwolfer, Sweetnorhternsaint, Keyed Entry and Sharp Humor all have done well so far this year, but I just dont have them in my top 10 right now.
