Bellamy Road out with splint injury

By Jay Privman
Daily Racing Form

Bellamy Road, who finished seventh as the favorite in Saturday's Kentucky Derby, was found to have a popped splint in his left front leg on Tuesday morning and will miss the rest of the Triple Crown, his trainer, Nick Zito, said Tuesday from Churchill Downs.

"The bad news is he popped a splint. The good news is the X-rays are clean otherwise, there's no fractures so he'll be back for the big races this summer," Zito said.

Zito said that owner George Steinbrenner's principal advisers, his son, Hank Steinbrenner, and Edward Sexton, agreed with the course of action, to await major races like the Travers Stakes, rather than press on for the Preakness or Belmont.

Zito said the splint would be fired, and that Bellamy Road would remain with him, rather than be turned out.

Zito ran five horses in the Derby. He said Andromeda's Hero would await the June 10 Belmont. He said High Fly, Noble Causeway, and Sun King were all still under consideration for the May 21 Preakness. Zito said he would train those horses at Churchill Downs through May 18, then fly them to Pimlico.
