well there is something called a negative pool. This takes place when so much money is in the show pool for one horse that the payoff should be like $2.02 for every $2. The Track is forced by rule to pay a minimum of $2.10.

But you do hear horror stories. One time I saw and heard one. About 10 years ago there was a horse named Holy Bull, the best horse in the country. He was running in a Grade 1 stakes with no real competition. Went off at 1-9. Some guy next to me had put $50,000 on him to show hoping to make a quick $2,500. Well as the race was running he had a horse matching him stride for stride, he couldn't shake him. Finally, frustrated and tired Holy Bull gave way, pulled up lame and did not finish (a shriek of pain coming from the bettor). The horse that beat him that day was just starting an amazing streak of wins himself. His name was Cigar.

If it can happen to an grizzled champion it can happen to a 3 year old anytime, don't bet money that you can afford to lose that way.

It depends on the amount of place money bet on the other horse that finishes in the top 2.

What you can do to even it up, is play small exacta boxes or quinellas (total bet about 1/20 of place bet on the 2 with the most place money on them) Unless an absolute bomb finishes in the top 2 you're looking at 2.20 or 2.10.

Ok lets take an example of a simple race where you plan to bet $20 to place.

There are 8 horses. At the start of the race, there is this much bet on each horse to place:

Horse #1 1000

Horse #2 2500

Horse #3 5000

Horse #4 500

Horse #5 1500

Horse #6 2500

Horse #7 2000

Horse #8 5000

Total Bet to place: $20,000 Track takes 10% - $2000

Total place pool: $18,000

Lets say you have made a bet on horse #8 to place

If #8 comes in 1st and #3 comes in 2nd there are $10000 of winning place money. That $10,000 is returned to the bettors. They now split the remaining $8,000. so each horse gets $9,000 paid on $5,000. Which is $1.80 per $1 or in the form you see $3.60 for $2.

Now if #8 finishes in the top 2 with #1 there are $6000 of winning place
money. This $6,000 is returned to bettors. The bettors then split the remaining $12,000 in the pool. So in the horse #8 pool there is the $5000 they got back plus $6000 for half of the pool. So the $5000 now returns $11,000 or $2.20 per $1 or $4.40 for $2.

The other horse bettors on the one get their $1000 back plus their $6,000 of the remaining pool. So they get $7,000 for each $1000 or $7 for a dollar and of course $14 for $2.

So the resulting payoffs for these 2 examples

So horse #8 has a higher place playoff when finishing in the top 2 with #1 over #3 because #1 had less place money bet on it.

Your $20 bet wins $36 in the 1st example $44 in the 2nd.
