Unbeaten newcomer Big Brown, a five-length winner in his stakes debut in the $1 million Florida Derby, has been installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite for the third and final pool for Churchill Downs’ 2008 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens its four-day run on Thursday.

Big Brown, the Richard Dutrow-trained son of Boundary, was listed as a narrow choice over Louisiana Derby winner Pyro in the pool that will give racing fans the opportunity to wager on contenders for the 134th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby, which will be run May 3.

The Steve Asmussen-trained Pyro was the 4-1 favorite in Pool 2 of the Future Wager, which ran from March 6-9.

War Pass is listed as the 6-1 third choice in the pool’s morning line odds after his first career loss in the Tampa Bay Derby.

California-based Colonel John and El Gato Malo, both of whom are set to run in Saturday’s $1 million Santa Anita Derby, are next at odds of 12-1.

The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses in Pool 3, stands at odds of 15-1. The “all others” bet was favored in Pool 1 of the 2008 Derby Future bet.

Big Brown is one of eight new betting interests in Pool 3.

Others include Lane’s End Stakes winner Adriano (20-1); Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Atoned (30-1); Tampa Bay Derby winner Big Truck (20-1); WinStar Derby winner Liberty Bull (50-1); Louisiana Derby winner My Pal Charlie (50-1); San Miguel winner Salute the Sarge; and Tomcito (30-1), a Peruvian import who finished third in the Florida Derby.

In the companion Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, Fair Grounds Oaks winner Proud Spell is the 4-1 favorite.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager, a $2 minimum wager and a win bet only, offers fans the opportunity to wager on Derby contenders at odds that could be significantly greater than those available on the day of the race

Betting on Pool 3 is scheduled to open at noon Thursday. The pool will close at 6 p.m. on Sunday and winning payouts will be based on odds that are in place at the conclusion of wagering.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will also open at noon on Thursday. The Oaks wager will close at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Didn't get a chance to see the race, but he must have been impressive.....

This dude destroyed the field at Florida Derby. I bet on him in that race and it wasnt even close. I knew he would be up there but I also thought that that Gato horse from out west would be a fav too.

Big Brown will be way overbet in the Derby. He ran a big race and is definitley a nice horse, but hard to judge after only 3 races against questionable competition. There is also the talk of his bad feet and how they will take to the hard Churchill Downs surface. One thing I will be watching is his works leading up to Derby day and how he works over the Churchill track. I am not saying he has no chance, but I cant see myself betting this horse on Derby Day. Some key prep races this weekend will gives us some more horses to talk about also. This years derby will once again be pretty wide open...

El Gato Malo will be running Saturday in the Santa Anita Derby, race 6.

El Gato is 5-2 at equibase right now.

Beside playing him straight up to win do you have any sugestions about any other horses to tie in with him for a exacta or tri?

Thanks and Good luck

Colonel John beat El Gato Malo last time out by 1/2 length and I expect these 2 to be in the mix again today. Wasnt much pace in the Sham(:50 for the 1/2 and 1:14.1 for 3/4) but today should be a faster pace with Polonius and Bob Black Jack being the 2 more than likely battling on the lead. Expect both Colonel John and El Gato Malo along with On the Virg not far off that pace. The one to watch may be Yankee Bravo who will be comming from well off the pace and could pick up the pieces for the victory in the end. Yankee Bravo ran 3rd, 3 1/2 lengths behind Pyro in his last race.

Id use Yankee Bravo and Colonel John with El Gato Malo in your exoctic plays. Good luck...
