CURLIN installed as 7/2 favorite

It's official: Curlin is Derby program favorite

Mike Battaglia is making unbeaten Arkansas Derby winner Curlin the 7-2 favorite for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Champion Street Sense, seeking to be the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner to capture the roses, is the 4-1 second choice.

Battaglia said he opted for Curlin – who has won his three races by a total of 28 lengths - because “he could be any kind of horse.”

Said Battaglia: “Yeah he’s unproven and has had only three races, but I think people will kind of look at that and he was a big, big favorite in Pool Three” of Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

He also noted that Street Sense has only been favored twice in his career. “You have to remember he was 15-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile,” he said.

Battaglia said he’s either going to pick Louisiana Derby winner Circular Quay (the 8-1 co-third choice with Nobiz Like Shobiz) or Street Sense in his selections.

His bomber: Curlin’s stablemate Zanjero, who was third by a total of a head in the Blue Grass. He’s 30-1 in the line.

Battaglia is also the track annoucer at Turfway park. I believe he has been setting the opening line for the Derby for the last 25-30 years, not sure exactly but its been a long time.

I did stumble around looking for ya at one point last year, but that was after many, many mint juleps and shots of early times. I was lucky enough just to make it back to our spot and find my friends again! Me no likey the rain in the forecast - was gonna fly down with a pilot friend, but may be stuck driving now.

I will be in a group of about 12-15 people against the fence on the back stretch. We are more toward the third turn of the back stretch, but we are still on the back stretch. We are to the right of the giant TV. If you go to the fence, you can't miss me. I will have on my new black Cappersmall T-shirt. You need to find me earlier in the day.................
