Derby prospect?...

Last year around this time, I started posting possible prospects for the Kentucky Derby and if some of you recall one of the first horses I mentioned was a lightly raced 3 year old who had not yet run on the dirt by the name of Barbaro. We all know the rest of that story... I will again try to find some 3 year olds this year that some don't know about who could blossom into derby prospects.

The first one was mentioned yesterday on TVG for those who were watching there, and I read about this horse last week in the Dec 30 issue of Bloodhorse magazine. Hard Spun, a son of Danzig-Turkish Tryst,by Turkoman, is 3 for 3 so far with his last win being a 7 3/4 lengths victory at Philly Park in the Penn Nursery Stakes. Comparisons are already being made to another Philly-bred and Philly Park based horse by the name of Smarty Jones, who also won the Penn Nursery Stakes en route to winning the first 2 legs of the triple crown in 2003.

I have yet to see this horse run, so only know about him from what Ive read, but he is definitely one to keep an eye on in the upcomming derby prep races...
