Damn it.....I got nosed out in a photo finish. If the positions were reversed, I would've had it for $200. Good thing I had it backed up for $100.

Campbellville, July 16, 2005… Prevailing in a very tight win photo, Andreoli Hanover ($5.60, $3.30, $3.00) and driver Mike Saftic completed a sweep of the 2005 Summertime Series Saturday evening at Mohawk, coming from off the pace to capture the $61,200 final in 1:52.2.

Also sweep-minded, Mattscape Seelster ($2.80, $2.30) and driver Roger Mayotte led the group home, but were just nipped at the wire, finishing a nose back and completing the $14.90 exactor.

With Randy Waples in the race bike, Hes A Nice Guy ($4.40) found narrow room late from the pocket and charged for the wire, falling just a head short, bottoming out the $63.80 triactor.

“Mike drove up on ‘Mattscape’ and I thought that Randy had actually won the race,” commented Rod Boyd, Mark Harder’s assistant trainer, from the winner’s circle.

A field of 10 three-year-old pacing colts faced the gate for the event, with Saftic and the bay son of The Panderosa leaving from post seven.

Having shown both front-end and off the pace styles in his preliminary victories, Andreoli Hanover utilized the latter tactic in the final, settling away off the engine in seventh.

“I didn’t think that we’d get away that far back, and I thought that we’d get a little bit of cover, but no one was pulling on the right line,” said Boyd.

Piloted by Chris Christoforou, Magnum jostled with Waples and Hes A Nice Guy to the opening quarter, reached in :27.1. Waples cleared to the front in the second quarter before Mayotte had Mattscape Seelster out and racing from the three-hole, wrestling the lead away before the half-mile indicator flashed up in 56.2.

Saftic made the first-over sacrifice with the $93,543 career earner in the final turn and made up ground on Mattscape Seelster, as the three-quarters marker came to life in 1:25.

With the pacesetter being reeled in late in the lane, initially it was anyone’s guess who would go home with the winner’s share of the pot.

When the dust settled, Andreoli Hanover’s owners David Scharf, Steven Arnold, Sampson Street Stables and Jerry Silva came away the big winners in the 27th edition of the Summertime.

“He’s a tough horse and we gave him an extra day in the field this week and I think it kept him just a little bit fresher,” Boyd said of Andreoli Hanover, a colt out of the Jate Lobell mare Allamerican Indigo, who now sports a seasonal record of 5-0-3 and $71,921 in earnings from 10 starts.

“I’m not sure what Mark’s plans are for him,” Boyd said of the six-time winner. “He might have a few stakes for him down in Pennsylvania or he might stick around for the Confederation Cup.”
